I have been a bookseller, an award-winning publishing sales representative, a literacy teacher, and a promoter of fellow authors and their books through my company, Alberta Books Canada. I have written and published one novel (print and eBook) and a novella (eBook) and I am a publisher, under my imprints, IslandCatEditions and IslandShorts. Through Alberta Books Canada, I represented authors directly, helping them find promotion for themselves and their books, sought out new readers, and assisted them in making wise career decisions. I created the writing contest, Coffee Shop Author, have sat on the Board of Directors of the Fernie Writers’ Conference, served as a member of the Calgary Distinguished Writers Program steering committee, and w ...more

Read in all genres, fiction and non-fiction and children's books too. Read well-written books and poorly written books, so you can tell the difference. Then have it clear in your own mind why you want to write, why you want to tell stories. If it's only for your own enjoyment, that's fine. If you want what you write read by others then you owe it to future readers to learn how to write, hone your craft, and seek the advice of professional authors and editors. They will be able to tell you when you are ready to move on to the next step.(less)

Everybody’s got to learn sometime

Last week, Dennis called me to ask for a recipe. “I bought a couple of tins of peach slices and now I’m looking for your mother’s chicken wing recipe. You know the one. Where would I find it?”

I knew it was in Bequia somewhere. Maybe on a recipe card in the little plastic box I had inherited from my mother? But he said it wasn’t there. Quite frankly, it was a recipe we used to make so often that I

“I wear a helmet when I write, because if you’re doing it right, writing is dangerous.”
Jarod Kintz, This Book Has No Title

Daniel Hecht
“Only when you are dangerous are you truly equal to the world.”
Daniel Hecht, Bones of the Barbary Coast

W.G. Sebald
“It is thanks to my evening reading alone that I am still more or less sane.”
W.G. Sebald, Vertigo

Pema Chödrön
“We don't set out to save the world; we set out to wonder how other people are doing and to reflect on how our actions affect other people's hearts.”
Pema Chodron, When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times

Pema Chödrön
“There is a story of a woman running away from tigers. She runs and runs and the tigers are getting closer and closer. When she comes to the edge of a cliff, she sees some vines there, so she climbs down and holds on to the vines. Looking down, she sees that there are tigers below her as well. She then notices that a mouse is gnawing away at the vine to which she is clinging. She also sees a beautiful little bunch of strawberries close to her, growing out of a clump of grass. She looks up and she looks down. She looks at the mouse. Then she just takes a strawberry, puts it in her mouth, and enjoys it thoroughly. Tigers above, tigers below. This is actually the predicament that we are always in, in terms of our birth and death. Each moment is just what it is. It might be the only moment of our life; it might be the only strawberry we’ll ever eat. We could get depressed about it, or we could finally appreciate it and delight in the preciousness of every single moment of our life.”
Pema Chödrön, The Wisdom of No Escape: How to Love Yourself and Your World
