Born on a dairy farm in Winslow, Maine, Jennifer's writing is heavily influenced by her childhood running free in the Maine pastures and woods near her rural home. She received a Master's degree in Divinity from Bangor Theological Seminary in 2001 and has served as an itinerant Quaker minister for several different denomination churches. Jennifer writes (in winter) from her farm in central Maine, where she and her husband (affectionately known as the Cranberry Man) raise Scottish Highland cattle. In addition to her novels and two non-fiction titles, Jennifer also writes a regular column, "Letter from Troy," for the oft-heralded Maine publication, Islandport Magazine. When one doesn't have many fans, one listens to them. Hence The Songbird of Sovereign (Book 3 in the series, White Wave, July 19, 2014) was born, and fitted into the series between Books 2 and 4.

I'm not sure where the idea for Jana's illness came from. My father's great uncle had had TB, and had met his wife at a sanatorium in central Maine. As a child, I thought that was the most romantic thing in the world. So it occurred to me that sending the young Jana Hastings to Windmere Sanatorium might be an interesting opportunity to explore love and loss, as well as a unique time in Maine history.

My editors unanimously declared that Songbird is the best of the three books in the series so far. I think it's possibly the best thing I've ever written, so I'm eternally grateful for those few fans who clamored for a story about their favorite character. I'll have to work hard on The Minister's Daughter (the last book in The Sovereign Series, due out August 2015) to top it, though! Stay tuned -- and wish me luck!

In the meantime, enjoy this trip down my Memory Lane in Songbird. May the novel bring you as much joy in reading it as the book brought me in writing it.

(Writing) Life Beyond the Sovereign Series

Sometimes I feel sort of shell-shocked when I actually grasp the fact that I've written five books in less than six years. (Actually, six books, but I'll get to Apple Tree in a bit.)

As most of you know, in January of 2012 I set out to turn a pastoral message into a novel, Hens and Chickens. Somehow the simple story of two women moving to Maine morphed into a five-book series, The Sovereign Series Read more of this blog post »

“There are very few of us who remember the day, the moment, when our childhood ends. For most of us, the sun sets on our innocence gradually, sliding down over the western horizon like a toboggan run down over a long, steep slope. We are never really conscious of the moment we reach the bottom of the slope; we just know that one day we wake up and the toboggan ride is over.”

“When I was young I made a list, "What I Believe In." Those ideals quickly exploded the first time I faced adversity. Now, my list is short and sweet: 1. Be kind; 2. Be honest; 3. Apologize when you fail at 1 & 2, which you will do, often.”

“We have a great deal more kindness than is ever spoken. (Despite) all the selfishness that chills like east winds the world, the whole human family is bathed with an element of love like a fine ether... The effect of the indulgence of this human affection is a certain cordial exhilaration.”
