The serd-mages take their name from theVaragan street slang word sersedrei, meaning“rascal” or “rebel”, depending on context.

The movement began as a counter-culture inVarah and Par-Varah communities, based on the principle that instruction insorcery skills should be available to all those with crystal bonds or Aureantsenses, regardless of their social status, racial origins or financial status.

It is credited to have started in the holycity of Dardenay in Southern Varathusia, when priests and priestesses onoutreach duty decided to start teaching basic sorcery skills to youngdisadvantaged adepts.  The movement grewand spread around many other cities on mainland Varathusia.

Name: Roheryn Redigan

Origin: Virian 

Roheryn Redigan is the eldest of the two Redigan sisters.  She has a sweet gentle nature and enjoys making her own clothes, reading fairytale romances and watching cartoon shows.  She loves cute animals and girlie fashions.  She struggles to get along with her younger sister, Malawi, and finds it difficult to understand Malawi's rebellious nature.

Name: Rashannah Redigan

Origin: Virian 

Rashannah Redigan is a full time stay at home mother.  She is married to distinguished lawyer Iveagh Redigan. They had their two daughters, Roheryn and Malawi, later on in life.  She is a staunch traditionalist and can be resistant to change.  She is kind but strict. Her daughters keep her busy, along with her outside interests like womens' social groups and church-based activities.

Name: Iveagh Redigan

Origin: Virian 

Iveagh Redigan is a distinguished but rather old-fashioned Virian lawyer.  He is married to Rashannah.  They had their two daughters, Roheryn and Malawi, later on in life.  Iveagh has a kindly gentle nature and is over-indulgent with his daughters.  He feels sad that they don't get along well with each other.  His work tends to dominate his life and he can often neglect family issues during busy times.

Name: Lady Faria Ingrao

Origin: Carpathian

Carpathian temptress Lady Faria Ingrao is the eldest daughter of Lord Ignacio Ingrao.  Like her father, she is hedonistic and promiscuous.  She cares little for the family business and spends most of her time on leisure activities such as going on shopping sprees, attending nightclubs and entertaining lovers.  She is extremely selfish and loves being the centre of attention.  She gets a thrill out of shocking people and often behaves outrageously in public, like her father.  She cultivates a bold and daring appearance, often wearing skimpy revealing outfits.  She has a cruel streak and will turn nasty on someone if they don't accede to her wishes.

Name: Ford Ardglass

Origin: Virian 

Ford is the eldest of the three Ardglass brothers, who are the sons of Emmett and Ardleigh Ardglass.  Ford and his two brothers are cousins to Vanlose, Sam and Maurey Ardglass.  He is extrovert and rather vain, believing himself to be attractive and desirable.  He enjoys heavy drinking sessions and flirting with young women.  His sense of humour is rather crude and he is fond of making sexual innuendoes.  Although not an overtly bad person, his company is an acquired taste and he can become annoying.  

Avareen Fermanagh comes from a Virian farming community. She has eight siblings. She is mostly cheerful but can be prone to melancholic moods at times. She worked on her family's farm until her crystal bond was discovered by a visiting priest. She then went to study at the Temple of Scherza in Shintillah, Southern Viria. She found Temple life difficult. Through her attendance at Lord Lyandro (Lyle) Menehari's drama classes, she met his youngest grandson, Lord Sylvio (Syl) Menehari-Cesario. They became friends and Syl ended up recruiting her into the Carpathian Alliance. She studied at the Donovan Institute and trained as an operative. She initially resisted her arranged marriage to her elderly tutor Caratacuus Helvellyan but soon realised it was a better option than marrying a farmer chosen by her parents.

Name: Malachi Batalan (original Carpathian name: Malchio Domingo Vatalo) 

Origin: Carpathian (identifying as Yttrian) 

Malchio Vatalo (rendered into the People's Language as Malachi Batalan) is a Carpathian/Yttrian lawyer.  He takes great care to hide his Carpathian heritage and present himself as a Yttrian citizen.  He has a quiet studious personality and displays a calm confidence and an air of authority.  He met the tempestuous Malawi Redigan at law school.  Against all expectations, she accepted his proposal of marriage.  They both set up their own separate law practices in Kashmir City, the capital of Yttria.  They have one daughter, Darien.

Otis Nelson Mulvaney comes from mixed parentage.  His father was Virian and his mother was Malvanian.  He reveals little about his past.  He is a mercenary who has served both with the Cyad and with the rebels of the Symanic Alliance.  He has no loyalty to anyone except himself.  He has a harsh cynical outlook on life and a cruel manipulative personality.  He attaches himself to Sheraleen Conder and causes trouble for her.

Leland Retnik comes from the famous Malvanian Retnik family.  He was born and brought up in a scientific enclave.  During the Great Invasion, he was abducted by the Cyad Confederacy and taken to one of their so-called corrective schools, actually prisons.  He is highly intelligent, with a quiet patient demeanour.  His inner strength, determination and scientific knowledge help him get through difficult times.  He becomes close friends with Sheraleen Conder during their incarceration.
