I wanted to pick up the story of HomePort's chosen family at a point where they were still adjusting to their changing circumstances. For a long time, I was stymied as to what sort of challenge they might face. When the pandemic came along, I didn't want to write about that, but felt comfortable writing about the changes that it brought on in my small hometown. It turns out we're all facing the challenges of gentrification, housing shortages, and lack of fulltime employment, so I had all I needed to write The Distance Between Us. (less)
