The books I have read in Beth Haslam’s Fat Dogs and French Estates Series are all delightfully charming, witty, and authentic. As soon as I open a page, I am lost in her magical worlds. Beyond the Forest Fringe is my absolute favorite! This memoir sh The books I have read in Beth Haslam’s Fat Dogs and French Estates Series are all delightfully charming, witty, and authentic. As soon as I open a page, I am lost in her magical worlds. Beyond the Forest Fringe is my absolute favorite! This memoir shares her (with her husband Jack) life and adventures living on their 342-acre estate, Le Palizac, in rural France. They didn’t initially intend to purchase a domain this size, but being the nature and animal lover she is, they both fell in love with the forest and woodlands filled with native species. Never having managed an estate this size with 300 year old historic structures needing renovation, a forest and woodlands to be maintained, and learning to understand the care and the nurturing needed for a healthy wildlife population to flourish, they were met with many challenges. A language barrier and lack of knowledge of the laws and customs in a foreign country added to the mix. Natures balance needed to be maintained. But this passionately determined and driven couple are not deterred, willing to go to great lengths to preserve and nurture their forest, land, and animals, no matter natures calamities. Storms, drought, disease, and flooding to name few. It takes hard work, long hours, perseverance, and flexibility.

Ms. Haslam is a brilliant writer and storyteller! I honestly don’t think I can find the words to do this book the justice it deserves. Her vivid descriptions of the lush forest and woodlands were exquisitely described.

“Other trails were covered by beech leaves, smooth and delicate with lacy edges, still retaining their polished copper sheen. And there were the show-offs. The palmate shape of sycamores, with their five distinct lobes and prominent veins.”

Her personification of the forest and animals is stunning and reflects her love and devotion.

“Horse chestnuts were overlaid with their great outstretched hands, some fingers still curled inwards in protection from the summer’s sun.”

Beth and Jack are a perfect balance to each other. Beth with her open-heart, compassion, can-do attitude, and giving personality, and Jack with his grumpy, practical approach and dry, sometimes sarcastic humor are wildly entertaining. They are people you would love to have as neighbors. The animals steal the show, from the lovable dogs to the wild boars. They are humanized in the most authentic ways, never losing their natural instincts. It is hard not to get attached to them. Tripod will live long in my heart.

I fell in love with this book. Beth Haslam gives you an intimate glance into the amazing and rewarding life she shares with Jack, her devoted pets, the forest and meadows they persevere, and the menagerie of wild animals they passionately nurture. As I often do in a series, I jumped from the first book to the latest. Although I missed important events in the previous books, Crance recaps enough of the previous books in a general way to get me caught up. The recaps enticed me to go back and read what I missed! This story focuses on Meade (son of Jacob) and Sarah Ernst’s daughter Lillian, her husband Andrew (who loves this family so much that he adopted the Ernst family name as his own), and their youngest child, Lance, 9 years old. They live in Painted Post, a rural town in upstate New York near the forest of Ryland Creek, where Meade has a farm and is an expert racoon hunter. As I began reading, I remembered how much I have missed this close-knit community and the warm and caring Ernst family. I could feel and see their love, respect, and appreciation for their family, heritage, faith, community, animals, and nature.

Crance has a gift for creating and developing genuine characters who are extremely likeable. They aren’t perfect, just honestly themselves. We get to know them through natural, witty, and humorous dialogue and actions, from the simple to the sublime, in acts of kindness, selflessness, and heroism. Meade is a good man and the rock and glue for his family. He is the keeper of traditions, but willing to learn and explore new things. Lance has an inner light that shines brightly and has confidence and maturity beyond his years, but a darkness threatens him. His relationships with his grandfather and his coonhound, Belle, are beautifully depicted. I was on pins and needles every time they went out on a hunt for ringtails.

As the story of the Ernsts’ unfolds in Painted Post, Crance simultaneously weaves the tale of a vicious adversary on a collision course, and some well-meaning forces hoping to intervene. Crance is not only a master of storytelling, but also of building tension and suspense. I felt evil could be lurking around every corner. I loved this book. As is Baldwin’s style, the action begins right from the beginning when Relic notices a stranger building a suspicious structure among the ruins in Canyons National Park in Utah. Once the man leaves, Relic discovers a dead body. In LA, Malia and her best friend enjoy a night out at a club. As an unsuspecting Malia sizes up the men eyeing her with interest, she is drugged and kidnapped. When she wakes up, she can’t understand how she ended up imprisoned alone in the desert. Relic, so attuned to the heartbeat of the desert, he misses nothing that is out of place or threatens the natural harmony of the desert. He rescues her, and they flee from a deadly pursuit.

There are so many things I love about Baldwin’s masterfully woven storytelling. His vivid descriptions of the breathtakingly beautiful and wonderous desert with its colorful spires, canyons, cliffs, mesas, arroyos, sagebrush, and ancient ruins are a testament to Baldwin's passion for them. As amazing as it is, the desert can be equally harsh and deadly for the untrained and unprepared who face wild animals, snakes, extreme heat, loss of direction, flash floods, and injury. In these books, the desert is its own character that must be revered to prevent peril. Which brings me to the unique and quirky characters Baldwin creates that readers can love, poke fun at, and root for. Even the bad guys stand out and are well-developed. My favorites characters are Dawson and Relic. Both characters have a strong sense of justice and would not hesitate to face danger if the need arises. Relic is philosophical, a hermit, antisocial, and a bit of a guardian for the desert's ecosystem. I enjoyed watching Malia’s transformation and hope to see her in future stories.

The plot is fast paced, perfectly timed, and character driven. There is plenty of action with murder, kidnapping, deception, revenge, and betrayal. The end of every chapter had me hurrying to the next. I highly recommend Slickrock for all lovers of suspense thrillers. Baldwin delivers! ...more
