Q1 2025 Update

It's update time again, and of course, the most frequently asked question I'm getting from you guys is unequivocally some version of:

What, Exactly, Is a story?

The number one complaint I've heard from acquisitions editors I've been friends with over the years is that they get stacks and stacks of book-length manuscripts that a...

How to Write Fiction: An 8 Step Overview for Absolute Beginners

Sometimes, when you're starting a new adventure (like writing a book) it's hard to even find where the pathway begins. What do you do first? Brainstorm a plot? Choose a genre? Learn to write scintillating dialog? Figure out what a "filter word" is?

Back when I was first trying to learn the ropes of the writing world, I often found that instructors and guides assumed that I already knew more than I did. They started a few steps farther down the path than I knew how to get to on my own, and they di...

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor: What Type of Writer are You?

If you’ve hung around in the writing community even a little bit, you might have heard of "Pantsers" and "Plotters" (or maybe you haven't), but have you heard of these other writer categories? (I’m guessing you haven’t, since I just made them up—or at least applied my own labels to category ideas cooked up by YouTuber Ellen Brock.)

Each writer's approach to creating stories is unique, but we do have some things in common that help us form categories. And those categories can assist in finding the...

Introduction: Craft Your Own Writing Adventure

One of the questions authors seem to be asked the most boils down to something along the lines of, “How do you do that?!”

I’ve had a great time teaching fiction writing in the Community Education Department at Utah Valley University and at several writing conferences. However, I’ve found it difficult to both teach and keep moving forward with my writing at the same time, given the other constraints of my current life. It seems I really only have the bandwidth to do one or the other on a cons...

Q4 2024 - Long Overdue Update

I know it's been a while since you heard from me, and I want to apologize for that. To say things have been crazy around here is an understatement!

But I'm working on digging myself out of the rubble, and am excited to announce that I'm getting my YouTube channel back online. I still can't commit to a regular schedule, but I'll be posting new content as often as I am able.

I also want to express how deeply I appreciate you for sticking with me despite my radio silence. Your support truly means the...

Dragon Planner Flip-Through

Here's guided tour of the new tool I've made to help me pull my new post-cancer life back together. I made it for me, but if you want to play along, you can purchase your own copy here:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C876KGC5

Over the years, I've used many planner styles, including Bullet Journal, Happy Planner, Full Focus Planner, and most recently HB90. All of them have pieces that I love. Each of them are missing a few tools that just make my life easier. And sometimes, a new beginning is easier...

Unboxing My New Planner & Much-Needed Update

I finally got tired of franken-cobbling together a new planner every quarter and up and made my own. Which I got printed. And put on Amazon. My copy just got here!

Also, I know I disappeared on you again, for which you have my deep and sincere apologies. I've been a little distracted. I offer my excuses here. But we really need to stop having so many life and death situations around here, or you all are going to start thinking I'm making all of this up.

Anyway, I'm back! And hoping to stay tha...

Talking to Myself: Q3 2022 Review

A photo of me and my clone sitting at a table talking to each other, with the title text,

Insanity? Nope, just another quarterly performance review as an author. My boss is cranky, this time around. And so is her employee. Sheesh. But there's some "good stuff" in there too. :)

Check out this video on my YouTube channel!
