I freelance for local non-profits, using my background in public policy and grassroots organizing to overthrow the patriarchy one introverted step at a time. When I'm not writing fiction, I return library books, make soup, and try to be cooler than I really am by hip-hopping at the YMCA.

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in American History from the University of Pennsylvania (where I dabbled briefly in being a College Republican) and a Master’s in American History from the University of Minnesota. I grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska, and now live with my partner and two daughters in a suburb of Minneapolis. I'm a member of SCBWI, MNSCBWI and the Authors Guild.

’89 Walls is my first novel. You can reach me through my website, www.katiepierson.net, on Fa

My favorites are from "642 Things to Write About" by the San Francisco Writers' Grotto and "A Writer's Book of Days" by Judy Reeves. Then I fill my gas tank by reading award-winning fiction, going to museums, and taking classes at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis.(less)

I write for two hours. I put my youngest on the school bus. I work out at the YMCA every day at 9:00. I write for another two hours. I read a section of the Sunday New York Times while eating lunch. Then I write for another two hours before ramping up for after-school craziness and the dinner hour. I work in my yoga pants and t-shirts, usually with my hair sticking up. My dog stares at my back all day from her perch on my office couch. I feel extremely lucky to be able to do something I love. And I am very aware that being married to a great guy with a job and health insurance makes the difference between thriving as a writer and merely surviving.(less)

“We all build walls to feel safe. But they often turn into traps that limit our experience.”
Katie Pierson, '89 Walls

“I like people who cry over books. It makes me trust them.”
Katie Pierson, '89 Walls

“I think we both want the same things, though. We want our friends and families to love us, for example. We both want to feel safe. We like our privacy. We both hope to make the world a better place for everyone, not only for ourselves.” Quinn nodded. “What I’m trying to say is that smart people like you and I can disagree on lots of things.”
Katie Pierson, '89 Walls

“Why did dogs make one want to cry? There was something so quiet and hopeless about their sympathy. Jasper, knowing something was wrong, as dogs always do. Trunks being packed. Cars being brought to the door. Dogs standing with drooping tails, dejected eyes. Wandering back to their baskets in the hall when the sound of the car dies away.”
