Hariharan is a finance professional by default and a writer by choice. Not content with just a rewarding corporate job, he took to writing a couple of years ago. He blogged on media and current affairs for a year before hitting on the idea for this novel.

Strangely, he got the idea for his first novel while reading the balance sheets of a few NGOs and corporates! An idea so powerful that it convinced the accountant in him that he could put together not just a balance sheet but an intriguing political thriller as well. Indian cinema over the last many decades has created many stereotypes— ‘Media crusades against anything bad’, ‘netas are, without a doubt, evil’ and ‘human rights activists are God’s gift to earth’ to name a few. What if any

Tamil Nadu origin author inspired by real incidents in debut novel

Hariharan Iyer has a cushy corporate job in Tanzania, heading the financial function of a 150-million-dollar group based in East and Central Africa. But his passion for news and politics, especially about India, also led him to start a blog on current affairs and media ethics almost a year ago. He realised soon enough though that to “connect the dots, one has to either get into investigative j Read more of this blog post »

“As they passed through the exit, Indrani pulled Zarina’s stole over her head, covering half of her face. The two words—not guilty—had changed Zarina’s stature in minutes, from a relentless human rights activist to someone running for cover. They climbed down the stairs and rushed to the parking lot. Zarina’s car was in a pathetic condition—smashed windscreen, deflated tyres, broken rear view mirrors and torn upholstery. An exasperated Zarina raised her hands in utter disgust. Mob fury. Idiots, if they have won the case, let them celebrate their victory; why smash my car? The fighter in her forced Zarina to take out her cell phone and click pictures of her car from different angles.”
Hariharan Iyer, Surpanakha

“As she crossed the defence team, Indrani saw Sesha sitting in a chair with his legs crossed and looking cool and composed. Mythili, who was by his side, was offering him coffee from a flask. As if they were in a cinema house waiting for the movie to resume after intermission. When everything pointed to an adverse verdict, how could he be so relaxed? He was typing something into his cell phone; perhaps tweeting. He had a massive following on Twitter. It ranged from simple appreciation for his administrative prowess to absolute fetish over everything about him—his trademark cotton pants and shirt, which had become a rage among his female fans, his Santro car, which had become a symbol of simplicity and his frugal dietary habits, which somehow raised him to a sainthood and absolved him of anything wicked. The more the mainstream media like TV and newspapers worked against him, the stronger was the support he got from his Twitter followers.”

“Don’t underestimate the power of a celebrity lawyer, especially if she had been a public prosecutor or advocate general in the past. She can barge into the court of any senior judge and obtain a stay on the arrest of a person. She can force a Supreme Court or a High Court bench to meet at midnight to hear her case. And Indrani is notorious for trying to bribe judges for getting favourable judgements. Of course, all these are backroom manoeuvres and no one gets to know them.”

A Good Thriller: Authors Add A Short Biography Here 499 1142 Oct 08, 2025 06:24PM
“Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with heart and soul there is no such thing as separation.”
Rumi

“Madhav literally grew up in all their restaurants. He got used to Aavin milk when he was five months old and filter coffee a year later. When he was five, Padmavathy would pick him up from school at noon and take him to one of their restaurants. He would do his homework as she supervised the eatery. Idly, dosa and vada filled his ears as much as ‘Baa-baa black sheep’. ‘Three portions of rice and one portion of udat dal for idly’ was as much a formula he memorised as (a+b)2.”
Hariharan Iyer, Surpanakha

“She closed her eyes to suppress tears. Rejection based on her religion. She was facing it for the second time in six months. Earlier, someone had rejected her love for the same reason. Now, this old man was refusing to sell one of his apartments to her. Earning money and earning respect were two different things, it appeared. Being a member of a minority community was, after all, not easy.”
Hariharan Iyer, Surpanakha

“Exhibiting nervousness would amount to weakness in public perception and nobody liked a weak leader. Showing bravado was the norm among Tamil Nadu politicians when faced with court cases. Even in the face of mounting evidence against them, they would behave as if it was business-as-usual. And if the verdict went against them, their usual refrain would be “judgement had been ‘bought’ rather than delivered.” Sesha could not stoop to their level, but still he had to put up a brave front at least till the judgement was delivered.”
Hariharan Iyer, Surpanakha

“She knew that Zarina’s apprehension was not totally misplaced. It had been a long and frustrating journey. An allegory that had many deceptive ends. Every time they thought the case had been solved, they stumbled on something that pointed at something more sinister. There were no apparent roadblocks, but that was perhaps how it was intended to be—to keep them off guard. Crossing the labyrinth was excruciating and would not have been possible but for Zarina’s altruistic, single-minded pursuit of the case.”
