Fun Photo Friday — Karnak Temple Favorites 2

Karnak Column in color filtered B&W

I decided to take my previous advice and do today’s Fun Photo Friday in color-filtered Black & White. Let me know what you think. Meanwhile, today’s entry means we leave behind Egypt and head to our next photo destination on this months-long journey from earlier this year.

Nile Cruise — Exploring Karnak Temple Part 3

Karnak Temple Complex

One of the things I most enjoyed about photographing Karnak was the way light and shadow played across the numerous columns, highlighting hieroglyphics and bas reliefs. Indeed, I anticipate that many of these photographs will convert very nicely into black & white, especially with some judicial use of color filtering before the conversion. And in case you’re wondering what I mean by that, here are some articles I wrote on the subject: Black & White Photography—It’s All ...

Nile Cruise — Exploring Karnak Temple Part 2

Karnak Temple’s Great Hypostyle Hall

Contining today with another photo gallery/slide show of the sights you’ll find at the Karnak Temple Complex. If you’re lost in the images, I refer you back to last Monday’s article containing much information on Karnak.

Nile Cruise — Exploring Karnak Temple Part 1

Karnak first pylon and the Avenue of the Rams

I pretty much set up today’s piece on Monday when I gave descriptions of the Avenue of the Rams, the first pylon leading into Karnak, and the Great Hypostyle Hall beyond. So, today I’m going to let the pictures do the talking with a photo gallery/slide show.

Nile Cruise — Arriving at Karnak Temple

The Karnak Temples, not to be confused with that other… … Carnac, the Magnificent one

Our last stop on this River Nile cruise aboard the Jazz Celebrity, and indeed our last stop in Egypt before flying out to Istanbul the next day, was the Karnak Temple Complex. This last stop would be particularly bittersweet, as it also meant the end of our wonderful time with our exceptional tour guide throughout this journey, Mohamad Salah. If you can one day make this trip, I cannot recommend highly eno...

Nile Cruise — Valley of the Kings: Exploring the Tomb of Ramses III

Entry corridor ceiling to the tomb of Ramesses III

We’re now heading deep into KV11, the burial tomb of Ramesses III. But before we get to today’s photo gallery/slide show, time for a little history lesson on the politics of Ancient Egypt. Just in case you thought only the Roman Empire held political intrigue and ascension by murder, consider the tale of Ramesses III. This poor fellow was murdered on the orders of his secondary wife Tiye and her eldest son Pentawer in what became known as th...

Nile Cruise — Valley of the Kings; Curse of Tutankhamun and Entering the Tomb of Ramses III

Entrance to KV62 — The Tomb of Tutankhamun

Back during our honeymoon, Ursula and I unexpectedly ran across the touring U.S. exhibit of the treasures discovered inside the tomb of Tutankhamun (a.k.a., “King Tut”). That tomb, now designated KV62, was discovered in 1922 by George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon, and Howard Carter, with the latter receiving the bulk of the credit. Thus, since we’d both “been there; seen that”, so to speak, neither Ursula nor I felt the need to tempt fate by paying...
