When I first began writing publicly I relied heavily on the accolades of fans and strangers. I got too much of my writing energy from the compliments of others which left me vulnerable to the crippling effects of writer's block. I'd fear deeply that I'd lost my creativity, or that I'd been a fraud all along, or that perhaps I'd said all that I have to say.

I can't tell you how freeing it is to no longer feel that way! Now, I get all of my writing energy from the mood that moves over me while writing. And I get most of my ideas from the life I live while not writing. So now, instead of fearing writer's block, I take advantage of my quiet mind. I listen and live with the ideas of others. It's a gift, really, writer's block. For me, anyway.

And though I'd be lying if I pretended I don't get a little bit nervous, I take advantage of those feelings too. After all, I write and I read to feel. So feeling a bit nervous when I'm not writing is alright with me. (less)

To know what I think and what I want and who I want to be. To know, also, that it's wonderful to love and accept others who are vastly different from me.

The answers to "who I am" and "what I believe" that I discover while writing are forever evolving, so I trust this is an addiction I will hold onto for life!(less)

Autism Answer: Your Story

Morning view

You wereborn into your circumstances, remember that? Slowly unfolding to becomeyourself, guided by the spaces presenting themselves to you. Spaces thatshifted as home, family, and expectations evolved around you.

It wasalmost never up to you, where you went or how. So small and without anycontrol, you were moved this way and that, told what was what, expected to findyour way to fit

“This is me telling you, you are amazing and beautiful. You are doing so much right! The children are watching so show them. Show them what it looks like to feel your own worth and celebrate your skills.”
Tsara Shelton, Spinning In Circles And Learning From Myself: A Collection of Stories that Slowly Grow Up

“Storytellers are powerful and we are all storytellers.”
Tsara Shelton, Spinning In Circles And Learning From Myself: A Collection of Stories that Slowly Grow Up

“I am a mother. I see clearly that while I've been teaching them, they have been my reason to learn.”
Tsara Shelton, Spinning In Circles And Learning From Myself: A Collection of Stories that Slowly Grow Up

“I've been making a list of the things they don't teach you at school. They don't teach you how to love somebody. They don't teach you how to be famous. They don't teach you how to be rich or how to be poor. They don't teach you how to walk away from someone you don't love any longer. They don't teach you how to know what's going on in someone else's mind. They don't teach you what to say to someone who's dying. They don't teach you anything worth knowing.”
Neil Gaiman, The Sandman, Vol. 9: The Kindly Ones

“You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore.”
William Faulkner

“When will you learn that there isn't a word for everything?”
Nicole Krauss, The History of Love

“Understanding the intricacies involved in raising someone with a physical or mental challenge for those who have never experienced it is like trying to understand anything foreign; impossible, though definitely worth doing anyway.”
Lynette Louise, MIRACLES ARE MADE: A Real-Life Guide to Autism

“I am a poet in deeds--not often in words.”
Ian Fleming, Goldfinger
