Brainstorming for Good... and for Evil

I went on an authors retreat this weekend. Three of my buddies and I gathered in a cozy space in downtown Austin where we wrote, did 20-minute sprints, and brainstormed about our respective stories. One of the best outcomes for me was choosing a punishment for my dark fantasy characters whose actions had resulted in the deaths of others. I knew the punishment would have to be delivered in a dramatic way (read: public and gruesome) that would inflict maximum physical and emotional pain for my

When Writing Looks Like Housework

I'm over at Stiletto Gang this week with a post called "An Hour in the Life of a Writer," a humorous look at how I've spent many a writinghour doing everything except writing. In fact, by the progress I sometimes make, or lack of it, you'd think I was an amateur. My creative wheels can spin relentlessly, powered by real desire to tell a story, yet I canstaystuck deep in theSands of Dearth. It's easier to go do the laundry or play with the cat or nuke mycoffee for the tenth time. I write

The Joy of Suffering

If there's one thing I relish about writing, it's making my characters suffer. Happy people with no challenges don't inspire page turning. When I watch Far from the Madding Crowd, based on Thomas Hardy's 1874 novel of the same name, the most fascinating thing about it is the taunting question:What bad thing could happen next? And after that, what bad thing could happen now? The story is fraught with suffering and disappointments and love unrequited times three. Exactly why I liked it. Does

Oh, the Horror!

I'm over at The Stiletto Gang this week talking about writing in a genre I never thought I would, because it turns out that dark fantasy, whichis how I categorize Demonesse: Avarus,is often used as a euphemism for horror. I don't even like horror! Except thatapparently I do, according to Amazon. I like it enough to write an entire series! Heh. That's okay. Look at all the authors we love who write delicious dark stories thatkeep us turning the pages all night, despite the threat of

Great Review of Take My Husband, Please!

The Self-Publishing Review recently reviewed Take My Husband, Please, and the reader really loved it. You can see it here, but following is the quickiesummary: "A laugh-out-loud romantic comedy. Will and Sophie are wonderfully flawed characters who find themselves in one absurd situation after another that'll have you in stitches. In addition, the quirky supporting cast really brings this novel to life, and the author was able to throw in several hilarious and suspenseful twists and turns.

Fans Review Demonesse

Fans review Demonesse: Avarus, Episode I~ "An absolutely wonderful book - sexy, suspenseful and rich!" "I am loving the first book of this series! Its one of those stories that you can't put down and find yourself reading it every time you have an extra minute. You can't help but just love the main character. She is so genuine but so conflicted and it's not her fault! I can't wait to read the rest of the series! I have 3 young children and don't find a lot of books that I really want to
