I have been making up stories since I was five, when I scribbled on my grandfather’s notepads my first tall tale about pigs flying. Yes, I started that shtick. You’re welcome. Since then, I’ve written just about everything and for various websites and clients, including humor features for Playgirl Magazine. That was fun. I was also a cast member of the 2011 Listen to Your Mother Show in Austin.

Today, I’m the author of romantic comedy and dark fantasy. My romantic comedies are saucy cross-genre stories about modern relationships. My dark fantasies are very dark and on the lusty side.

My feelings about writing can be summed up in a favorite quote from Robert Heinlein who quipped, “Writing is not necessarily something to be ashamed of, but do

I have what I call writer's inertia, instigated by the social side of me that wants to be with people or playing at life instead. Or doing dishes. Writing is hard work, and it's sometimes difficult to make myself sit in my chair and dive in. Once I do, I'm able to immerse myself in my story world, and it's during that time that I feel I'm doing what I was called to do because it's so much fun. It's getting into the chair that can be a challenge some days.

The only time I can recall ever having "writer's block" was when I couldn't figure out how to resolve a plot hole, and so I avoided working on the story. Once I powered through that (which is simplifying the struggle that actually took place), I was very happy with the solution and was able to move forward to finish the book. (less)

They have a really symbiotic relationship from the beginning, where a close friendship blossoms into love. Emma and Mr. Knightley seem perfect for one other, each feisty and headstrong in their own ways, but allowing for each other's differences. I loved their story, and will reread it/rewatch the movie of it (with Gwynneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam) at every opportunity. (less)

Brainstorming for Good... and for Evil

I went on an authors retreat this weekend. Three of my buddies and I gathered in a cozy space in downtown Austin where we wrote, did 20-minute sprints, and brainstormed about our respective stories. One of the best outcomes for me was choosing a punishment for my dark fantasy characters whose actions had resulted in the deaths of others. I knew the punishment would have to be delivered in a dramat Read more of this blog post »

Karen Pirie rocks!

I loved this book. I have watched the TV show and found that really gripping, so when I saw this book online I knew it had to read it. So glad I did. I'm a huge fan.

What a Ride!

This was a slow-burning, beautifully escalating read that I couldn't put down. I'm now a big fan of Lucy Foley's and can't wait for the next book.

“What day is it?” asked Pooh.
“It’s today,” squeaked Piglet.
“My favorite day,” said Pooh.”

A.A. Milne
“Later on, when they had all said “Good-bye” and “Thank-you” to Christopher Robin, Pooh and Piglet walked home thoughtfully together in the golden evening, and for a long time they were silent.
“When you wake up in the morning, Pooh,” said Piglet at last, “what's the first thing you say to yourself?”
“What's for breakfast?” said Pooh. “What do you say, Piglet?”
“I say, I wonder what's going to happen exciting to-day?” said Piglet.
Pooh nodded thoughtfully. “It's the same thing,” he said.”
