Horror, Adventure, Apocalypse, Romance
Horror, Adventure, Apocalypse, Romance
What does horror, adventure, apocalypse and romance have in common? They are all popular genres in literature. They are all topics of today’s world.
We witness horror every time we tune into the news on television, radio, newspaper, or on the internet. We see stories of people shooting, killing and otherwise doing unspeakable acts of horror and terror on others. Almost always it is in the name of race, creed, or religion.
We see adventure on wildlife shows about Africa, finding the truth in our destination, going ghost hunting, or travels to other countries to experience cultures outside our own.
We here about the coming apocalypse on religious shows, in church, or by watching disasters unfolding on weather television channels. We cluck our tongues and wonder what the world is coming to.
We see romance in the simple pleasures of a kiss, and elderly couple holding hands, a child being held by a parent, a parent watching over their child at a hospital.
This is life. Live it to the fullest. Stop hating others and learn to love your neighbor. You never know what this road we journey down will bring you. What sights will you see and embrace?

Disasters or Approaching Apocalypse?
The Bible tells us about how the world will end with the opening of the seven seals. Indeed, it would seem as though those seals are being opened when we hear about birds falling dead from the skies, tornadoes, hurricanes, devastating earthquakes, famine, plagues.
Still, there is evidence that points to a normal physical cycle of 3,000, 30,000 and 300,000 years during which these types of events occurred. Each time a species disappeared from existence. Is this current cycle man kind’s turn to end, or is it the portends of the biblical prophecies?
Apocalyptic novels, movies and television series have certainly gained in popularity and along with it come the Preppers. Should we be following suite, or is this a fad that will eventually pass?

Tolerance
Why do disaster stories capture our attention? Tales of apocalypses, earthquakes, tsunamis, mass murder all grab us. What makes AMC’s The Walking Dead so popular? Is it the horror of zombies or the characters struggle to retain their humanity? Is it entertainment, or a way to express our fears over what is happening in our world?
Do the attacks by foreign and home-grown terrorists play a role? How did you react to the recent spate of shootings by police and citizens? Did the deaths at the hands of police make you feel anger? Did the shootings of law enforcement officers make you fearful?
I admit I’ve always been drawn to these types of stories. I like to read how people overcome their fears to become heroes. The best books have the characters learning how to survive. The worst ones are a recitation of skills or have experts in all fields suddenly gathered together in one place.
These books and short stories extract an emotional response from the reader. Is it because the novels are well written, or do they mirror what is going on in our world today?
What happened to freedom to practice religion? What happened to the creed America once lived by and is reflected in the Emma Lazarus poem The New Colossus? “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free...”
Where is tolerance and acceptance of other cultures, races and humanity?

What creates fear?
Horror stories have been around for eons. I remember listening to tales of bogeymen while sitting around a campfire toasting marshmallows. Soon we were hunched together and every cackle of the flames or the snap of a twig sent delicious tingles of fear down our spines.
The campfire faded from our consciousness as the story drew us in. Stop. Wait. What's that sound? Can you smell the richness of spilled blood? The storyteller often slowed the tale or lowered his voice to effect a creepy atmosphere.
To me a great horror story has atmosphere, a creepy environment, something evil to be fought. It builds tension, draws you in so you feel, hear, smell, and taste the fear. Gore is left to the imagination.
My favorite horror story is Shirley Jackson's 'The Haunting if Hill House.' What is your favorite horror story?

Journey Down This Road With Me
Memories are fluid. The slightest change in your environment can trigger a recollection from years gone by. Last night as I sat listening to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Born on the Bayou I found myself feeling nostalgic for the days when I ran barefoot through my yard. In my mind I could almost see the swamp John Fogerty was singing about; feel the humidity drenching me in sweat. I smelled the fecundity of the verdant foliage.
Memories such as those are ripe for turning into short stories and novels. When I write, I immerse myself in the tale and find that I am transported into the scene. It might be the dead of winter and the house is a chilly sixty degrees, but if I’m writing about sweltering heat in the middle of summer, I feel hot and sweaty.
The same thing happens when I read an excellent book or watch a movie. For a few hours I am placed in a world far from my reality. I see, feel, smell, and taste every tidbit presented. All too soon the story ends and I am back home.
Do you ever get so involved in a book that you feel as though you are part of the story?

The Long Road Out of Nowhere
I love to read and write stories. Ideas haunt my dreams and my waking hours. Yes, I'm the stranger that suddenly pulls out a notebook or a tablet and starts jotting down notes in the middle of a busy restaurant, store, or while sitting in my car at a stop light.
I see inspiration in everything such as the falling of a leaf, a child's laughter, etc. I write because I can remember and to keep those memories alive. I remember my mother's voice calling to me to come in for lunch on a hot summer day. I remember the smell of fresh mowed grass in the early morning. I remember how cool the lawn felt with dew drops glistening from each green blade.
I remember the terror I felt when the skies darkened, and the singing of the birds stopped just before the torrential downpour and the clap of thunder or lightning stuck.
I write for pleasure. I write because I must.
