Maxim Mock Cover Girl Interview with Mary Sage Nguyen

In order for me to prepare for my Maxim Covergirl Interview. I am giving myself a mock interview. Start reading below to see my answers to potential questions.

1. Tell us about yourself and what led you to this competition.
I’m Mary, a passionate and driven individual who loves expressing herself through creativity, confidence, and connection. I’ve always been inspired by strong, empowered women who aren’t afraid to stand out and own who they are—something Maxim has always celebrated. I entered this competition because I see it as more than just a modeling opportunity; it’s a platform to share my story, inspire others, and challenge myself to grow. I want to show that beauty isn’t just about looks—it’s about strength, individuality, and using your voice to uplift others.

2. What are some of your most significant life experiences and how have they shaped you?
One of the most significant experiences that shaped me was losing my mom to cancer when I was 19. That kind of loss forces you to grow up quickly, and it taught me resilience, independence, and the importance of living with purpose. My mom was one of my biggest inspirations, and I carry her strength with me every day. Since then, I’ve worked hard to build a life that honors her—I’ve earned all of my insurance licenses, stepped into underwriting, and passed 10 observations for both personal and commercial lines. I’m also proud to be an author of both novels and children’s books. My first novel is dedicated to my mom, as a tribute to the love, strength, and wisdom she gave me. Writing has allowed me to connect with others and tell meaningful stories that empower and inspire. All of these experiences have shaped me into a woman who leads with heart, embraces challenges, and never forgets where she came from.

3. What do you want the judge to know about you?
I want the judges to know that I’m not just here for a title — I’m here to represent strength, purpose, and passion. After losing my mom to cancer at 19, I made it my mission to live life fully and fearlessly. I’ve built a career in insurance, earned multiple licenses, passed 10 underwriting observations, and became a published author — including a novel dedicated to my mom. If I win, I plan to use part of the prize to finally pursue a dream I’ve had since middle school: climbing Mount Denali and eventually Everest. It’s more than just a physical challenge — it’s symbolic of everything I’ve overcome. I also plan to donate to cancer research in honor of my mom. This opportunity isn’t just about me — it’s about using my voice, my platform, and my story to inspire and give back.

4. What are your biggest passions and why are they important to you?
Some of my biggest passions are writing, staying connected to my community, and supporting the things I love. I really enjoy being a Google Local Guide — it may seem small, but I think it’s important for people to have honest reviews so they know what to expect and which businesses truly deserve support. I also love writing, whether it’s novels, children’s books, or sharing stories that connect with people on a deeper level. It’s one of the most powerful ways to express yourself and inspire others. And of course, I love keeping up with my local sports teams Dallas Mavericks, and Texas Rangers. They bring people together and reminds me how powerful community pride can be. All of these things matter to me because they’re rooted in connection, truth, and expression — which are values I try to live by every day.

5. What are your goals and dreams for the future?
My goals and dreams for the future start with winning the Maxim Covergirl competition and proudly representing the brand. I’d love to be featured in the magazine and support Maxim by promoting the magazine on social media — because when I believe in something, I go all in. I also dream of stepping into the entertainment world, even if it’s just starting as an extra in a movie — I’ve always loved the energy of storytelling, whether it’s through writing or film. Beyond that, I want to keep chasing bold experiences, like climbing Mount Denali and Everest, and using every platform I have to inspire others to dream big and live fearlessly.

6. How do you plan to use your platform if you win?
If I win, I plan to use this platform to inspire others to chase their dreams fearlessly, no matter what life throws at them. I want to show that beauty and strength come from within — from resilience, purpose, and authenticity. Part of my journey includes climbing Mount Denali and eventually Everest, a dream I’ve had since middle school, and I hope to document that adventure to motivate others to push past their own limits. I also plan to donate a portion of the winnings to cancer research in honor of my mom, who I lost at 19 — she’s the reason I live boldly and with heart. And as an author, I’ll continue using my voice through storytelling to uplift others, support women, and encourage people to own their narrative. This isn’t just about a cover — it’s about creating real impact

7. Why are you interested in being a Maxim cover girl?
I’ve been interested in being a Maxim Cover Girl ever since I found a copy of Maxim Magazine in my brother’s room back in the ’90s — I was instantly hooked. I’ve always loved the bold confidence Maxim represents, and the Hot 100 list has been something I’ve looked forward to every year. It celebrates beauty, strength, and individuality in a way that really resonated with me. My favorite cover girl is Ashley Tisdale — seeing someone who was both fierce and relatable on the cover really inspired me. Being part of that legacy would be a dream come true, and a way to show that confidence and inner strength are what truly make a woman stand out
6. What does Maxim mean to me?
To me, Maxim is all about bold confidence, fierce beauty, and celebrating women who own every part of who they are. It’s sexy, it’s stylish, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously — which I love! Maxim has always had that cool factor — from the iconic covers to the Hot 100 list — it’s where fun, power, and personality all come together. Being part of that world feels like stepping into a spotlight that says, ‘This is me — and I’m not afraid to shine.

7. What makes me different from the other contestants?
What makes me different from other contestants is the mix of grit, heart, and drive I bring to everything I do. I’ve faced real-life challenges — like losing my mom to cancer at 19 — and instead of letting it break me, I used it as fuel to build a meaningful life. I’ve earned my insurance licenses, stepped into underwriting, become a published author of novels and children’s books, and I’m even working toward a lifelong dream of climbing Mount Denali and Everest. I’m also a proud Google Local Guide and a huge supporter of my local sports teams — so I stay grounded, curious, and connected to my community. I’m not here just to look the part — I’m here to inspire, give back, and show that strong, smart, and driven is the new sexy.

8. What is a unique talent or skill that you want to share?
My unique talent is storytelling — whether it’s through writing novels, children’s books, or even detailed Google reviews as a Local Guide! I have a natural ability to connect with people through words, to turn life’s experiences into something meaningful and inspiring. One of my proudest moments was dedicating my first novel to my mom, who I lost to cancer — it was my way of honoring her strength and sharing mine. But my storytelling doesn’t stop on the page. I also have a deep love for adventure, and I’m currently working toward a lifelong dream of climbing Mount Denali and eventually Everest. That drive — to reach new heights both literally and creatively — is what sets me apart.
In a world full of filters and highlight reels, I bring truth, depth, and heart — one story, one summit at a time.

REVIEW:
“Penelope Pendleton and the Peculiar Purple Plumage” is a special book developed to aid increasing a child’s vocabulary in a fun manner! The artistic illustrations are well done by the author Elva. The glossary of the “P”words is also unique to this book. It is not very often you see a glossary in a children’s picture book. Penelope, the giant purple parrot and Paulina are the best characters and they are the main focus of the plot. As you turn each entertaining page, you will widen your child’s vocabulary, and broaden their horizons. Perk their interest in something new, and vastly different from other mass market children’s picture books. I recommend “Penelope Pendleton and the Peculiar Purple Plumage” to children ages 2-10.
ABOUT AUTHOR:
Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Elva Gamiao has been writing creative short stories and poetry since childhood. Her works are inspired by real life events that are expressed through children’s picture books or short novels, some written in the style of alliteration. Elva has a passion of infusing her stories with complex vocabulary, providing a glossary for “new words” to assist children of all ages in learning and reading.
Elva has been a real estate agent for 16+ years, she’s decided to start her new journey as an author and illustrator. Elva lives with her husband of 20+ years, 4 happy rescue cats and a spoiled Papillon named Yoyo.
AUTHOR INTERVIEW:
First, I want to thank Elva Gamiao for doing the interview with me. Read the interview below and found how intriguing she can be.
What is your writing process? I’ll usually have an idea for a story and start with jotting down ideas and writing phrases and coming up with how the story should go. Next, it’s writing it out and seeing how the story comes together and how well it flows. I re-read it and check if there are any areas that need changing or fine tuning and make them. After I’m done with the 1st draft I usually send it to my editor and she’ll send it back with any changes or let me know if it’s good to go.
Who are your largest author influences? I grew up reading the classic fairy tales, but my favorites were Alice In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Heidi by Johanna Spyri and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Ronald Dahl.
What is your favorite book? Oh, there are so many I guess if I had to choose one that I loved since childhood it would be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
What is your latest news? I just finished up two manuscripts, both are children’s book. One will be a picture book and I’ve partnered with a talented illustrator. The other is a short-chaptered children’s novel where I will be doing the illustrations.
5. What are the five things people do not know about you?
I’m an obsessive writer, I’ll write non-stop or wake up and start writing if I have an idea.
I’m a night owl.
I love coffee.
I love food delivery.
I don’t drink soda
6. What genre do you write? I love to write children’s fiction and fantasy fiction.
How do you come up with characters for Penelope Pendleton and the Peculiar Purple Plumage?? I came up with Penelope Pendleton as a character I could relate to when I was a child, Paulina her friend is my childhood friend and we had the same nickname. The rest of the characters just fell into place.
What are your favorite characters in a Penelope Pendleton and the Peculiar Purple Plumage and Why? Definitely the girls, Penelope and Paulina because as friends they were invested in following the giant parrot everywhere. I would have done the same, the other characters including the birds are my favorites also.
Is there a message behind Penelope Pendleton and the Peculiar Purple Plumage? I think the message was that even in the craziest situations, there’s always good that can come of it. I love that what could have been a menace turned into something lovely.
Why did you pick the title Penelope Pendleton and the Peculiar Purple Plumage? I chose the title because it was so much fun to say.
Why did you choose to illustrate Penelope Pendleton and the Peculiar Purple Plumage instead of hiring a freelance illustrator? I had a couple of illustrators that were interested, but I chose to do it myself because I wanted a certain look and feel for the drawings. I’m not a professional artist at all but I tried my best and had fun with it.
Did you hand draw the pages in Penelope Pendleton and the Peculiar Purple Plumage or use a software like Adobe Illustrator? I hand drew and hand colored everything.
Did you write down a manuscript to assist in organizing pages Penelope Pendleton and the Peculiar Purple Plumage? I wrote the Penelope story straight out I didn’t expect it to turn into a manuscript at all or be something I would eventually publish. I usually write short funny alliteration stories to help when I’m stuck on something else that I’m writing.
Who did you dedicate Penelope Pendleton and the Peculiar Purple Plumage to and why? I dedicated the book to my grandparents Paul and Elva Elsner, because my entire life from childhood to adulthood they let me know that anything was possible. When you’re raised by two people who support and love you no matter what the world they’ve presented to you is always filled with magic.
Why is important to teach children more complex words? When I was growing up my grandpa just read to me, and not just children’s books but books with all type of words. Anything I didn’t know I’d ask him and he’d bring out this huge dictionary and we’d look it up and he’d explain it to me until I understood what that word meant. Children, are very intelligent as they absorb what they’re taught like a sponge, introducing complex words aren’t complex once they know them.
Do you like Doctor Seuss’s children’s picture books and if so why or why not? I LOVE Doctor Seuss!! Those books are so much fun with the rhyming and surreal pictures. It has opened my mind up to so much creativity when I was little.
What do you like about being a Real Estate Agent, and did you pass the exam on the first try? It took me 3 times to pass the state test, because I would over think the questions. I have always loved houses and can appreciate floorplans and the construction of the homes. Being able to match a person or family with a house that fits them makes me very happy.
Do you hope to own your own agency/business one day? No, I’d rather represent a company doing the best job I could do instead of wanting to own an agency myself.
How many books do you read a year? I used to read around 3-5 in a year, but lately since I’m writing I’m only working on a couple right now.
What is the last book you read? Diana Gabaldon: Outlander Series (Book 4) – Drums of Autumn
What is the hardest part in writing Penelope Pendleton and the Peculiar Purple Plumage? The writing wasn’t the hardest part, it was the illustration.
What did you enjoy about writing Penelope Pendleton and the Peculiar Purple Plumage? I enjoyed that I was laughing every time I came up with the next line to write, it was such a fun process.
How long did it take for you to write Penelope Pendleton and the Peculiar Purple Plumage? The story I had down in 45 minutes, the editing and revisions about 4 hours.
Do you have any children or pets? If so, do they distract you, or assist you with writing? I don’t have any children, but I do have fur babies. They don’t distract me from writing they usual inspire me.
Have you travel for your book, if so where? I didn’t travel for Penelope, I might travel for it’s sequel just to get inspiration.
Do you have a day job, you would be comfortable sharing? Do you have any good stories about your day job, you would like to share? I did have a full time real estate job, but I’ve recently decided to dedicate my passions to writing full time and being a real estate agent part time.
Do you have a muse? If you do, what do you love the most about him or her? I have a few, they’re my family members my next two books are about a little boy who’s inspired by my husband. The other is a special little girl inspired by my niece, I love that they have the greatest personalities and passions.
What are your next writing projects? I’m working on a YA novel about a girl who’s never left her neighborhood going on a dangerous magical journey.
What are your writing or publishing goals in the future? My goals are to write my books in a series collection, because I have so many ideas for future books. I’ve already committed to continuing Penelope Pendleton as a series of alliteration stories with another one coming out this year. The next two books I’m releasing will also be a series as well as the YA novel I’m working on and another children’s book topic about nature. I love that I can continue telling these stories with more books.

She enjoys life, love, laughter and Chocolate!
AUTHOR INTERVIEW:
First, I want to thank Cynthia Thompson for doing the interview with me. Read the interview below and found how intriguing she can be.
What is your writing process? My writing process changes depending on what I am writing. If I’m writing on a particular topic, I first get an idea about how I want to present the issue. I will then do research – and then write about it based on the research I’ve discovered and my own personal experience. If it’s poetry I’m writing, then it’s a whole new ballgame. When I write a poem, more times than not, the poem basically presents itself to me and writes itself. I’m simply the vessel that it flows through.
Who are your largest author influences? Some of my largest author influences are: Langston Hughes, Robert Frost, Marianne Williamson, Carolyn Myss and Eckhart Tolle.
What is your favorite book? My favorite book is The Bridges of Madison County by Robert James Waller
What is your latest news? I’m getting ready for a big photo shoot and started back working out on my Total Gym!
What are the five things people do not know about you? Five things people don’t know about me: I still watch cartoons from time to time, Frosted Flakes and Honey Nut Cheerios are my favorite cereals, I eat an apple every single day (Ambrosia Apples are my favorite), I love horses, and I have to have a plug-in fan on when I sleep at night. Even if it’s winter time and the heat is on.
What genre do you write? I write Poetry, Fiction, Non-Fiction, Satire, Romance, Drama, Comedy, and Song lyrics. I also have experience writing Plays.
Is there a message behind From Doormat to Combat? The message is that no matter what you struggle with, you can learn the tools to help manage it and overcome.
Why did you pick the title From Doormat to Combat? I chose the title “From Doormat To Combat” because it represents the messages I am expressing throughout the book. Which is, you can go from feeling defeated on the battlefield of life to feeling like a confident and powerful warrior?
What makes you want to empower others? Because I know what it feels like to lack confidence in oneself and in your ability to achieve. I want my readers to know that if they are willing to do their “personal work” that they can learn how to live a better life. In turn, once a person is more empowered, they can help someone else become such.
Why is being shy a weakness? Actually, “shyness” in and of itself, is not a weakness. In fact, research has shown that there is nothing wrong with being shy. Rather, it is “unmanaged shyness” that seems to be the real perpetrator. Shy people are often exceptional listeners and they are great at paying attention.
Why is self-esteem and self-worth important? Self-esteem and self-worth are important because when you feel good about yourself emotionally and cognitively and understand your self-worth, you are more likely to recognize your strengths and abilities, and will operate in them fully as you journey through life. Self-esteem and self-worth develops from knowing who you are.
What is the best way to respond to bullies? The best way to handle bullies is to be kind.
What is people pleasing and why is it harmful to your potential audience? People pleasing, is putting yourself out and ignoring your own needs in order to do whatever is necessary to please someone else. This behavior is harmful because you are not being your true authentic self and it brings about chaos to your spirit.
How many books do you read a year? I read about three books or more a year.
What is the last book you read? The last book I read was No More Christian Nice Girl by Psychologist, Jennifer Degler and Paul Caughlin.
What is the hardest part in writing From Doormat to Combat? Not wanting to stop writing.
What did you enjoy about writing From Doormat to Combat? What I enjoyed most about writing From Doormat To Combat is knowing that once I finished writing the book that it would have the potential to help heal wounded warriors everywhere who suffer from unmanaged shyness, people-pleasing, and self-sabotaging behavior.
How long did it take for you to From Doormat to Combat? 9 to 12 months
Do you have any children or pets? If so, do they distract you, or assist you with writing? Yes. Dogs are magnificent companions. I find that they help me relax. I tend to believe that they also help me to write better.
Have you travel for your book, if so where? Yes. California, Atlanta, Florida, North Carolina and Chicago.
Do you have a day job, you would be comfortable sharing? Do you have any good stories about your day job, you would like to share? Yes, I am an Entrepreneur, Life Coach and Mentor.
Do you have a muse? If you do, what do you love the most about him or her? I have a few muses: Oprah Winfrey, Barack and Michelle Obama and Joel Osteen. What I love the most about these winners is their overall character and honorable attitude. I admire their ability to maintain their composure and true identity, through adversity and negative criticism.
What are your next writing projects? I am currently working on an inspirational poetry book for children.
What are your writing or publishing goals in the future? My goal in the future is to complete the five more books that I’ve already started writing. I am also completing song lyrics for upcoming projects.

Mystery of the Kettleberry Woods Preview
“The Mystery of the KettleBerry Woods”
By: Mary Sage Nguyen
Ginger stubbed her toe on a loose brick outside the grocery store. She dropped the box of close to rotting vegetables. She stopped and looked at the creature before her. He was hunched over and muddy. The creature was completely nude, and its body was exposed in the cold wind. Its eyes were rather large, and bright blue. The creature growled at her and quickly retreated to the back of the woods on all fours. Ginger stood there frozen, and confused.
“Ginger, Ginger, Ginger!” She heard a man called. The man was her manager. “There you are. Why are you stand out here for?” Her manger glanced down at the box of vegetables, you didn’t even throw out the vegetables?”
“I am sorry, sir. I just saw it.” Her manager glanced at the woods suspiciously.
“Come on. Let’s get you inside.”
Inside the store, the pair walked into the break room. Ginger’s manager made some tea for her to drink. She was shivering, and shaking from the incident.
“Are you sure you saw it?” Her manager asked sitting down next to ginger. He doubted Ginger saw the creature everyone in town was talking about. She was an older women. Her gray hair was curly. She was the typical vision of a grandmother. In her khaki and green polo uniform.
“I saw it Ben. I swear. It didn’t attack me, but it growl at me.”
“I don’t know Ginger, you got some age on you. Maybe it was your imagination.”
“I know I did. It was just as Larry described feral, dirty, hairy, and hunched over like a dog. It even ran back to the woods on all fours. “
“Oh come, now. It is just a legend.” Ben still didn’t believe his employee. “Do you really believe in monsters?”
“It’s true Ben!” Ginger said. Her eyes grew large and she shook. Ben patted her back and gave her some more tea to drink.
“Well, I guess I was wrong.”
“Do you think we should mention this tomorrow at the town meeting?” Ginger asked gulping down the tea. The warm tea did not calm her.
“I don’t know. It’s getting late Ginger, you should head home. Would you like me to call your grandson?”
“I will call him, I hope he will stay with me tonight. I am scared ben, I am afraid the creature will follow me home.” Ben laughed.
“Don’t worry Ginger! You will be fine.” Ginger’s grandson came by and picked her up. Ben watched as Ginger safely left the grocery store. He dragged his feet back to store to lock it up for the night.
The next day at town hall.

Follow on Nicole Eglinger Twitter, Google+, and Facebook
MY REVIEW:
The Darker Side of Me is not your typical vampire romance. It’s based in modern day but has ancient origins dating back centuries. Nicole Eglinger creates a believable vampire society that has been established for long period of time. Dante’ Vladimir Razvan is portrayed as an excellent supervillain. The main character Aleksander Strafford is a very complex character. He is mysterious, charming, deadly, and loving. In beginning he loses his sister and runs away from shock. He makes his way to San Francisco to find a new love interest Avery Michaels. Aleksander stalks her for a while. He reveals himself when the time is right. Avery falls madly in love with him. She works as Curator. Her character is very mature, and vulnerable in other ways. They have a son together. Which is very unique to this particular vampire romance book. Usually, in other vampire novels the male is never able to impregnate the women of his dreams. It also makes The Darker Side of Me more compelling to read. When everything seems to be going smoothly, and without a hitch. A prophecy comes to light in the vampire society of San Francisco. It involves the two love birds, and his son. Aleksander blows it off as a speculation and non-issue. As the pair’s love continues to swell. The prophecy the vampire society predicted becomes more believable. I love that the characters are older and not teenagers. I recommend The Darker Side of Me to a mature, paranormal romance, and vampire loving audience. You will find it a thrilling read!

MY REVIEW:
“The Power of an Innocent Mind” is an intriguing and unique book. The book moves quickly, and is powerful. The princess is sweet, caring, and affectionate. Her faith is undeniable. She believes there is good in everyone. Princess Grace leads wicked rulers to salvation. The message of “The Power of an Innocent Mind” is to help people to overcome evil and to direct them to god. You would never suspect a child to become a positive and influential leader. In this case Princess Grace does. I recommend this book for Christians, and anyone who is a strong believer in Christianity. As it will give you more faith to believe, and to never give up on people who stray from the path.

How to create your own magazine
Dear Readers,
I decided to give you some insight on what I learned about creating a magazine. It is not impossible as people would lead you to believe. In fact the materials you is all available on the world wide web.
When creating a magazine, the first thing you will need is stock images. It is very important to invest in stock images. You will need them for your website, and magazine. You always have the option to be old fashion and take your own pictures. If you even feel the need to hire a photographer.
There are several places you can purchase stock images. These include
My personal favorite
http://depositphotos.com?ref=4769579
and
Now, you have your stock images. Start working on the website for your magazine. It is important to start the website because you could get people who want to share their article with your magazine. Therefore you need a contribution page.
This is the site I built and an example of a contribution page. The logo was made custom for me by a freelancer, I hired.
The most important asset you need is a mission statement. Why are you creating a magazine? Who is the magazine for? What is the purpose of your magazine?
My mission statement is highlight in the picture below.
You do need the additional pages subscribe, advertise, staff, and contact us. I used godaddy’s website builder and customized it to my liking.
After you have built your website site start marketing on twitter, facebook, and etc. Drive traffic to your contribution page to help jumpstart your magazine’s content.
The next part is using a layout for your magazine. Large magazine companies have many talented graphic designers at their disposable. All you have is yourself. There is good news, I did my research and found thousands of magazine templates available on the cheap. Just because they are affordable, doesn’t mean they lack in quality.
Here is the link to Creative Market. Where you can find many creative items for sale. I also love the fact they give you free goods each week. Be sure to download each week. They put the free items up on Monday.

https://creativemarket.com/templates/magazines
Important note about the template. All of Creative Market’s magazine templates are used in Adobe Indesign.
Now you got your template, next work on the content. This is the hardest most frustrating part of creating a magazine. You have a few options.
Choose between syndication, freelancers, or a team you assemble yourself. If you choose syndication, it will cost you a pretty penny. I contacted the Washington Post Syndicate. They charge $50 per week plus $12 delivery charge. This is the last time I checked. It is easy with syndicate because they provide you with quality articles, and content for your magazine. You don’t have to come up with the ideas for articles.
https://syndication.washingtonpost.com/syndication
Another source is using freelancers. I love with freelancers you can check their qualifications, and references from various freelancing sites. You must first figure out ideas for the articles first. Than assign your freelancers various articles to write. They need a solid idea in order to right.
After you assemble everything, had it edited it, and so forth. Use the template you purchased from Creative Market to assemble your magazine.
After the template is assembled to your liking. You must work on distribution.
Most magazine companies have gone digital as the times progressed. If you only want to distribute your magazine digitally.
Use ISSUU to distribute your magazine. The largest problem with ISSUU, is the fact your magazine is free. Readers would be reading your magazine for free. If you want to make income. Its best to offer a sample of the magazine via ISSUU and then redirect it to your magazine site. Where readers can subscribe.
In the digital age, it is easy to forget print magazines. If you would like to pursue printing a magazine.
Upload your completed magazine template to http://www.blurb.com/magazine
They sell magazines at a reasonable price. I liked them best out of the companies, I searched through.
I hope this post was helpful to you! I will keep you updated on my magazine adventures.
Thanks for reading,
Mary Sage Nguyen
