I am passionate about being an author; storyteller, and poet. I write the Durstan series, which takes place in the early medieval period we called the Dark Ages, also stories based on folklore and tradition. Whilst my Ghosts From The Bazaar continue to haunt me!

I am also a book coach; editor, and ghostwriter.

Please join me in the fascinating world of story, and share my eclectic mix of fact and fiction.

I have been interested in the early medieval period for many years, so have read a lot about it. I am fascinated by archaeology; artifacts and ancient places. There are still gaps in our knowledge of what sometimes truly happened, but it's always exciting when new discoveries are made. It's been a privilege too as an author to imagine how the gaps in history might have been filled.
I have read the surviving poetry and almost contemporaneous accounts of Bede; Adomnan's life of St Columba; the earlier Benedictine Rules and more...
I tried to stay true to fact, but some of it is our interpretation of archaeological finds, and I was always conscious of writing a story. I imagined how the changes taking place in society and politically in 794 AD might have affected the lives of ordinary people.
This led me onto reading some of Philip Newell's work about the Celtic Church; Bible passages I remembered from childhood, and modern books on Druidism. All of which came together then, as Durstan and Ailan's story, in The Monk who Cast a Spell.(less)

It's a great question, thank you. As a child I loved reading history books. I have a Medieval History A level. I continued to be drawn to this period throughout my career as a lawyer, and it was a natural progression to write about it once I was able to. I love the beautiful manuscripts, art, poetry and craftsmanship of the artifacts we have found. Similarly, reading about the archaeology, the social and political setting of the time, and how our perception of the early medieval period has changed over the years. It's a fascinating time! I also couldn't see that a man and woman's feelings about love would have changed a great deal across the centuries, and this becomes Durstan and Ailan's story in The Monk who Cast a Spell. (less)

"Lovely short stories. In chapter 6 I wasn't keen on the character Craig, he really only thought of himself. If you do add to that story, please don't let Daisy marry him."

“On a crisp morning when old Father Winter was nipping noses and fingertips until they ached, a shadow flitted across the narrow passage between the buildings. A low moan escaped its lifeless lips. Whilst a passerby assumed it must have been the wind. It had started to snow again on the roofs which sagged between the black and white timbered gables. Their ancient tiles, a reminder of another era. The people who lived in the rooms beneath, behind the herringbone of blackened wood, became the eyes which still stare through diamond window panes of Elizabethan glass. Watching. Always watching, those who are alive today.”
Sharon Bradshaw, The Bookseller's Ghost

“It's enough for me to be sure that you and I exist at this moment.”
Gabriel García Márquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude

“You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching,
Love like you'll never be hurt,
Sing like there's nobody listening,
And live like it's heaven on earth.”
William W. Purkey

“Spring was moving in the air above and in the earth below and around him, penetrating even his dark and lowly little house with its spirit of divine discontent and longing.”
Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”
Oscar Wilde

“One glance at a book and you hear the voice of another person, perhaps someone dead for 1,000 years. To read is to voyage through time.”
Carl Sagan
