Janis Harper is a writer, editor, singer-songwriter, actor, and former adjunct English professor turned expressive arts therapist. Her lifelong passions for the arts, metaphysics, spirituality, and philosophy come together in her 2021 philosophical-spiritual novel, "Jonas and the Mountain: A Metaphysical Love Story" (Sacred Stories). Although fictional, she considers it to be the truest work she’s ever written. Janis's writing can be found in literary journals and anthologies, including in two creative nonfiction anthologies that she conceived and edited: "Body Breakdowns: Tales of Illness and Recovery" and "Emails From India: Women Write Home." She has presented her work in Canada, the US, and India, and lives in British Columbia. https:// ...more

Something sparks a passion that needs to be expressed. Or I might get obsessed by a particular idea... or an unfinished conversation... Or reading another writer's work will inspire me. Or I engage with another arts modality--dancing, singing, drawing--or I just go for a walk and clear my head. Inspiration is a magical, mysterious thing; it can't be harnessed. But it can be invited.(less)

Can these two approaches to "truth" meet? The novel poured out after a retreat in India with an enlightened guru and some life-changing experiences.(less)

Magazine Reviews of Jonas

Jonas and the Mountain: A Metaphysical Love StoryJonas and the Mountain is classified as a novel. And as such, it is intriguing, exciting, compelling, and profound. The characters are strong, the story line is exemplary, and the ending is decidedly surprising, as a good ending should be.
But of special interest to this reader is the mystical dynamic of the characters and story, the journey into th Read more of this blog post »

A quietly beautiful book. Meditative and insightful. I enjoyed its interiority. I’m not sure what I am taking away from it however, except the experience of reading it.

Everyone else seems to have been enchanted with this story. Not I.

In the first third of the novel, it was painfully obvious how the story would conclude.

“Everything is symbolic, and the meaning of the symbol lies within you. Interpret it.
There is a message there for you.”
Janis Harper, Jonas and the Mountain: A Metaphysical Love Story

“Death is a shift of focus. There is no loss; no one disappears. The people who are important to you are like constellations of stars in the night sky. What you see shifts depending on your vantage point. It doesn’t mean that the stars you can’t see have disappeared. We each exist this way to each other, flickering in and out. Death is but another flicker. The constellation remains—the relationships, which are, ultimately, a kind of love.”

“When you die you don’t leave anything or anyone. The world as you knew it falls away because it only existed in your perception. No one is left behind. You’re all still there, stars in a constellation, just flickering in a different way because you’ve shifted your perspective.”

“Breakdowns literally break down old modes of perception, break them apart. In that way you can walk right through them, into a new way of seeing and being.”
