Johnny Lee Wilson was born in and eventually attended high school (Ernest Righetti) in Santa Maria, California, after spending much of his early life in California's Central Valley. After attending California Baptist University (then, CBC) on a drama scholarship, he went on to earn two magisterial degrees and one doctoral degree before pastoring several churches and teaching as an adjunct professor.

When he lost his teaching position based on a bogus doctrinal dispute, he entered journalism full-time with Computer Gaming World magazine. Later, he became Group Publisher of Hasbro's/Wizards of the Coast's Amazing Stories, Dragon, Dungeon, Star Wars Gamer, Star Wars Insider and TopDeck magazines.

Nuremberg by William F. Buckley Jr.

It doesn’t matter whether he is writing fiction, political diatribes, or theological reflection (admittedly rare, but it’s there), the late William F. Buckley, Jr. taught me things I didn’t know. I didn’t always agree with him, but I was always stimu ...more

The Black Ascot by Charles Todd

If The Black Ascot had been a Dick Francis mystery, I would have been certain of the horse-racing connection immediately. As one of Charles Todd’s Ian Rutledge mysteries, I wasn’t certain if it involved dark neckwear, a horse running at Ascot, or, in ...more

Cold iron, the protocols of magic suggest, is a disruptive influence on magic. Old cold iron is even more disruptive. Hence, the title Cold Iron Task refers to needing cold iron to accomplish a task. In this case, procuring the cold iron is fundament ...more

The works of Christopher Moore are often laugh-out-loud funny. Sometimes, I laugh because I picture the preposterous situations he concocts; other times, I snicker out of inherent guilt for the blatant “naughtiness” in both diction and action; and st ...more

The Bookseller of Inverness by S.G. MacLean

Although I enjoyed the novels in “The Seeker” series, The Bookseller of Inverness is more to my taste. It isn’t because of the mystery. The mystery seems more straightforward than those in the other series. It’s probably because of its Jacobite sympa ...more

Long Past Dues by James J. Butcher

In my opinion, Long Past Dues, the second novel in The Unorthodox Chronicles, suffers from second book syndrome. It features good ideas and builds somewhat off the colorful and memorable characters of Dead Man’s Hand but it ends up with so many cleve ...more

That's cool with me. I love getting credit for stating the obvious.
