I was born and raised in upstate (Western) NY State. I received my bachelor’s in French from SUNY Geneseo (with considerable Spanish), a Master’s in Near Eastern Studies (Arabic language concentration) from the University of Michigan and a Master’s in TESOL from Columbia. I also studied at the University of Besançon, France (now the University of Franche-Comté) and in Cairo at the American University.

I worked in Saudi Arabia as a personnel officer for companies contracted with the Saudi military in the mid-1980s. In 1993, I pursued a life-long ambition to teach and came to Japan.

I’ve been around, as they say.
