Read Excerpts of Man and Wife

Interested in Man and Wife, but feeling shy about committing? Several of the stories were previously published, and you can check them out courtesy of the internet. An excerpt of the story "Refugees" is featured on Literary Hub, and "Creation Story" appears in full at The Masters Review. Previous versions of "Every Good Marriage Begins in Tears" and "The Hut" can be found at Narrative and Joyland , respectively. Lastly, the title story, "Man and Wife", is included in The Missouri Review's online anthology and teaching tool, textBOX, complete with response questions, writing prompts, and an interview with me about the story.

Interviews with Portland Monthly, OPB's State of Wonder, and More

If you are curious as to how I handle the attempts of interviewers to probe my mind, I'll be updating my website with interviews as they come in. During the launch of Man and Wife, I spoke to Portland Monthly and Oregon Public Broadcasting's radio show on the arts, State of Wonder. The blog and soon-to-be book, Read to Write Stories, posted a writing exercise based on the title story, and with site author Michael Noll, I explored some questions on short story craft. Links to past interviews with the literary journals Prairie Schooner and The Missouri Review are on my site, with more to come!

Big Love for Sarah Shun-Lien Bynum's Madeleine Is Sleeping

My love for Sarah Shun-lien Bynum's Madeleine is Sleeping is such that I wrote a "Big Love" column about it for Memorious.

[Her book] belongs to a tradition that is, to me, much more illustrious, one of odd, difficult little books by women....among their aims and accomplishments is to shoot cracks through the ground that traditions stand on. Read more here!
