Award-winning and USA Today bestselling author K.J. McPike lives out of a carry-on size suitcase and a backpack. (Mostly the backpack.) After growing up in rural Virginia, she embraced the nomad life and has since lived in nearly a dozen countries across five continents. No matter where she is around the globe, she is likely consuming too much caffeine and spending more time in coffee shops than her own apartment.

Make time to read and write every day. Both are equally important.

Also, try not to go back and edit until you get to the end of your project. I spent so much time editing and perfecting scenes as I wrote them, only to find I had to cut them once XODUS was completed. Cutting scenes always seems to be heartbreaking, but it eases the pain if you didn't spend countless hours working on one before you give it the axe.(less)

I usually just start writing words on the page, even if those words have nothing to do with my project. I've been known to begin with things like "I have no idea what to write" and go from there (shout out to my tenth-grade English teacher, Ms. Stanley, for teaching me that trick). Once the pen gets moving, there's no stopping it. Best case scenario: I get back on track with my project. Worst case: I get my frustrations out. I figure it's win-win.(less)

And The Winner Is...

Dear Readers,

I am so very excited to announce that XODUS was selected as a First Place Category Winner in the 2015 Paranormal Awards for Supernatural Fiction! I am both honored and humbled to have been chosen, as I know there were many excellent novels in the competition. Congratulations to all the other category winners. I can't wait to see what happens as we all go on to compete for the Paranorm

“See, this is why I hate Google. You come across one site, match one symptom, and all of a sudden you’re dying of carbon monoxide poisoning or cancer of the big toe.”

“Everything may be black and white in your world, but in reality there's a hell of a lot of gray.”
K.J. McPike, Xodus

“He smashed his lips together, and I knew what he was thinking. He always made that face before he brought up my mother. “Did it have anything to do with—”

“Not everything is about my mom,” I snapped before he could get the words out. “Geez, you took one psychology class, and you think you’re frickin’ Freud.”
K.J. McPike, XODUS
