Writing advice: Write. All the time. Write a lot. Also, read.

Use of language is a cumulative skill. Once you've mastered the basics, all the inspiring "how to be a writer" books in the world are no substitute for practice and experimentation. Reading - and re-reading, if you can, especially books you particularly enjoy - can help you get a sense of pacing and narrative shape. But when it comes down to it, you get nowhere if you don't just sit yourself down and get the words out.

Past that: Write multiple stories, short or long. Don't hang all your hopes on this one specific thing that you've always longed to write. And don't give up if you can't sell that thing you love. Write another thing you love, and another after that. There is value in the work that is independent of commercial success.(less)

Why Publishing Sucks, and Why You, Dear Author, Should Consider It Anyway

Look. I’m supposed to be working on an MS this morning. But this Anthropic capitulation settlement has made me incandescently angry, and apparently I have to shriek for a while before my creativity will make friends with me again.

I don’t want to write about the Anthropic capitulation settlement itself. People are doing that all over. But one little factoid has emerged: as part of the settlement, y

“One of the less entertaining things about getting older,” he said, “is that you learn that most things that sound like bullshit are actually true. It’s easy, in hindsight, to believe people were incompetent, that they should have seen it coming, that someone who knew what they were doing could have prevented all of it. But nothing in life is so linear, Chief. And nothing in life is so simple.”
Elizabeth Bonesteel, Breach of Containment

“that was reality, and when all of this was untangled she would have to sit down and have a good hard look at that fact.”
Elizabeth Bonesteel, The Cold Between

“You’re not a detective, dear. You’re a mechanic.” “It’s debugging, Bob, like I do every day. Start with what’s wrong, and go backward until you find the cause.” “You’re”
