I haven't had writer's block yet. There is one exercise that may help, whether your mind is temporarily blocked or not.

Take out a DVD of your favorite movie and grab a pen and paper. As you watch each scene (or your favorite scenes) pause the movie and try to describe on paper what you are seeing and how you are feeling. Be overly descriptive, in ways you'd never be in writing your book.

What you might find is that you are able to place your mind in a creative mode where objects and ideas come together naturally. This exercise can be done while you people watch at a park, coffee house, etc ... try it!(less)

“Isn't it strange how life won't flow, like a river, but moves in jumps, as if it were held back by locks that are opened now and then to let it jump forwards in a kind of flood?”
Anita Desai
