I do agree with all or nearly all of what is said in this book. Dixon talks the talk of the progressive academic, and her writing is of a quality that can appeal to both academics and a wider audience, which is something academia needs more of, not less. From what I can see, there should be no squabbles about plagiarism or any use of AI, and Dixon successfully knits together discussions touching on disparate, independent topics in philosophical aesthetics - from the causal impact of “fictions” on social reality to an argument that speech constituting hate speech should be limited rather than banned or burned - to unify her own topic. She writes, “Censorship today is the suppression or prohibition of communication or expression which is similarly considered objectionable to the common good” (p. 203) while acknowledging that “our cultural products prop up systems of oppression and constitute one of the many societal barriers…especially masterpieces that have stood the test of time” (p. 103). Must it be conceded that standing the test of time does not make a norm or practice right - or a masterpiece canonical - especially when, like hate speech, it “amounts to an act of subordination…sustaining hierarchies, legitimating oppression, assaulting the dignity of those targeted by it,” or sustaining in-groups (p. 208)? Since Dixon's book does not offer deep and technically sustained arguments for or against ethical or aesthetic evaluative objectivity, the reader must look elsewhere for such arguments. But the question itself is raised and has currency.

What I find most relatable about Dixon professionally is how difficult she finds it to be a woman in a position of (academic) leadership. You don’t want to “get on someone’s nerves,” but you know that you, too, have a right to exist - to self-develop, to be yourself, to speak publicly or publish, and to earn revenue and recognition from your published work when it is read and it is valued. ...more

Larry Shiner’s book shines as not only an intellectual but also a cultural history of art, including the visual arts, literature, and music, that responds to Paul Oskar Kristeller’s Renaissance Thought and the Arts (1950) in an original way. To the student and the general reader, he offers a fascinating and engaging array of evidence against the “comforting” assumption that people in the past were “just like us” and that we can treat classic works of art as if they were art in the modern sense. This project runs contrary to what Shiner identifies as the Enlightenment ambition of universalizing what is but a moment in history (or, I would add, a part of a larger whole). To the scholar, he offers an original historical argument, ten years in the making, that set out to give a “brief account that integrated the history of the idea of fine art and the aesthetic with social and institutional changes, expanded it to include the concept of the artist, and brought the whole down to the present, showing its relevance to current debates” (p. 10). Shiner accomplished his goal. His reference to his book's stages as “stages of gestation” (xviii) is relatable; I have long felt the same way about writing. Shiner himself is an interesting, unpretentious man from a background in Kansas who came to be a prominent voice in the field of philosophical aesthetics, seeing the ideas, conceptual polarities, social practices, and cultural institutions that were established in the course of the eighteenth century (Enlightenment period) as an “art system” that remains the framework within which most of the changes in ideas and practices in the arts currently take place. Against this background, he wonders whether a “third system of art” might emerge that’s different from the “older system” and the “modern system” (p. 16). Full of richly interesting subchapters like “the gender of genius,”“the collapse of patronage,” and “art becomes an independent realm,” his book joins a valuable cohort of books in the intellectual and cultural history of art and the arts, such as Lydia Goehr’s The Imaginary Museum of Musical Works (1992). ...more

It shows how Thoreau was an “arch-individualist” and perfectionist who advocated human self-development of FULL virtue without giving into narcissism, egoism, or moral vanity (“Virtue” chapter). The long list and discussion of personal, social, intellectual, aesthetic, physical, and superlative virtues is useful (“Recovering full human virtue” sub-chapter of “Virtue” chapter). Such a long and challenging list! Cafaro claims that Thoreau’s ethical wisdom derived not just from ancient and romantic virtue traditions but from reflection on his own unique experience. Thoreau once went to jail as an act of civil disobedience in protest against slavery. As is clear in our own times, the existence of slavery in a “helpless minority” presents a crux of WHAT TO DO about it, not merely how to think about it. (But this presupposes recognizing and then publicly acknowledging it as such, which is challenging in our own times more than it was for the institutionalized slavery of the 19th-century U.S.) Despite hating politics, Thoreau believed in a kind of heroic abolitionism and was among the first, if not the first, to champion MASS civil disobedience in resistance and rebellion against institutionalized slavery and unjust, tyrannical government policy (“Politics” chapter). Cafaro also gives an astute discussion of Thoreau's close friendship with fellow transcendentalist philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson and shows how he tried to balance his desire for closeness with an overriding cultivation of solitude that became key to his philosophical success (“Solitude and society” chapter). Speaking of which, Thoreau’s ethical style is a far cry from that which is necessary to cultivate an ethic of care, as developed by Carol Gilligan, Virginia Held, and others - and to be what Held calls a “caring person.” This raises the question: Would abolitionism in our times more cramp the style of a Thoreauvian or a care ethicist? The former holds that “moral law is superior to all positive law”; the latter, that there are no moral laws - only caring relations; but both would hold equally that, in Cafaro’s words, “Conscience and the freedom to act upon it are what separate us from animals or mere things (like Kant, Thoreau here makes no moral distinction between the two). But the trafficking of people’s bodies and images of their abuse, whether real or AI-generated, and the damage to their reputations and, hence, their autonomy, that can result, is something that we are seeing spread rapidly as AI advances. From cases of child pornography, where the sexual abuse and pornography is always non-voluntary, to porn directed against single women who are not voluntary porn stars (revenge porn, for example) to cases like that of Gisele Pelicot, documented in her successful book Hymn to Life (2026), to cases of AI-generated sexualized images of people, usually women and children but not always, the effect is the same: humiliation (sometimes on top of abuse and physical degradation they have already suffered). But victims in NONE of these cases deserve shame; instead, "shame has to change sides,” as Madame Pelicot says in her subtitle.

“Underreported and understudied,” Giuffre writes, "child sex trafficking is not just a problem that exists in Third World countries, as many people mistakenly assume. In America, incidents have been reported in all fifty states. And in recent decades, the internet and social media have made it easier for traffickers to make contact with their victims." She continues, “There are countless victims of sexual trafficking who have not yet escaped their exploitative situations, as I was fortunate enough to do. Those girls and boys, women and men, will likely attempt to flee between three and seven times before they succeed, according to recent research. Many of them will not be offered help by a single caring stranger. In America, where only 4 percent of law-enforcement agencies have personnel dedicated to exposing human trafficking, most victims must rely on their own wits, and then on luck, to survive. I want to change that” (Chapter 1). Often, as in Giuffre’s case, the traffickers are among the rich and most powerful members of society, which makes it difficult for the trafficked (or formerly trafficked) to get a hearing, much less justice. However, as in Pelicot’s case, Giuffre writes, “I yearn, too, for a world in which perpetrators face more shame than their victims do and where anyone who’s been trafficked can confront their abusers when they are ready, no matter how much time has passed” (Chapter 38). Another harm that, sadly, follows on the heels of the abuse usually is threats to the victims’ reputations and safety ever after, especially in cases where the perps are rich, powerful, and more able to keep their threats under the radar. (And, since it takes time, resources and often attention for them to do manage these threats, it seems like it would be prohibitive for any but the irrational with severe psychosexual malformations or the insanely stupid.) They hobble their victims' economic and social prospects and drive them into the wilderness, figuratively and sometimes even literally, while they continue to gloat and often expand, whether in their trafficking or in their social and economic power. Meanwhile, what are their victims to do? Giuffre raised a family before committing what’s been called “suicide," and she noted in this book, “Epstein told me that every girl he’d had sex with had benefitted in one of three ways: either he gave them money to better their lives or he helped jump-start their career or he married them off to one of his successful friends…He clung to the idea that, at his core, he was a generous benefactor” (Chapter 15). It’s easy to be a fool for such reasoning. But everyone who has been abused and trafficked (or compromising images spread of them) would seek justice if it just weren’t for the intervening threats and the shaming. We as a society have no control over the threats - that’s for justice systems - but we can try to be more understanding when we see images of abuse and less eager to blame or shame victims for complicity in it; we can be more understanding of childrens’ accepting forms of “payment”; less complicit, as employers, friends, or even as family, in letting sex and porn traffickers succeed when the justice system hedges or looks the other way, saying “things like that don’t happen here." That is something we all can DO, but it takes thought; and it may also take the realization that, with the spread of AI-generated sexualized images and porn, YOU could be next.
