My advice to aspiring writers is simple:
1. Read as much as you can.
2. Sit down and write every day, without fail. It doesn't matter how much you write: some days you'll write a paragraph, other days you'll write three pages.
3. Make writing a routine and ritual. Do it at the same time every day, for a set length of time.
4. Quit when you're excited and you know what you want to do the next day. Don't stop for the day when you're worn out and frustrated.
5. Find a writing group: like minded people who are as committed to getting published as you are. You want to surround yourself with writers who have good critical minds and people who are each others biggest fans. Competitive grad student types who like ripping things apart are of no use to a writer. We're hard enough on ourselves as it is...

The Other Side of the Camera

I've spent almost 25 years behind the camera; rarely in front of it.
