Meet Linda North
Hello everyone!
It’s May already? 2021 is cruising right along. I feel so far behind. I promised a return to featuring authors, so today I’d like to introduce you to Linda North. Linda enjoys letting her imagination run wild in the scifi romance genre. Her latest is a revision of her novel Deep Merge: An Interstellar Romance. I truly enjoyed both the concept and the characters. Always in awe of those who can build worlds, I love what Linda did with NaQuin Nali. If you’re looking to escape the reality of Earth for a few hours, look no further for a great read.
Hello Linda. Thank you for joining us. First up, why did you decide to revise Deep Merge?
The revised edition is Deep Merge: An Interstellar Romance. Deep Merge’s first draft was started in 2010 and after many changes, published initially in April 2014 by Sapphire. In late 2019, I worked on adding more detail to Toni and Kaesah’s personalities and their interactions with each other. Also, I wanted to include an epilogue that gave a glimpse of seven years into their future and a glimpse of what was occurring on Earth and NaQwi. The epilogue is based on a short story about their future together on the planet NaQwi Nali and was published in an anthology a few years back. I added a glossary of all the NaQwin proper names mentioned in Deep Merge and their meanings. Kaesah’s name in NaQwin means Ocean Zephyr. Atimki’s name means Moonless Night.
How would you describe your writing style?
Seat of the pants. I like writing in 3rd person and giving each main character or important supporting character a voice.
Do you have a writing ritual or special place you like to write at?
In my extra bedroom with the door closed and instrumental music playing on low volume.
Tell us about your WIP.
I have around 15,000 words I started writing in late 2018 that I intend getting back to. No date set. It’s a scifi taking place in current times but on another planet.
Coffee, tea, or hot cocoa and how do you take it?
Coffee with a bit of almond milk. Hot cocoa at night around three times a week.
Care to share your guilty pleasure?
Sweets. Candy, cake, pies. Chocolate anything.
What’s your favorite way to unwind after a long day?
Read my Kindle and watch scifi related programs on Youtube and the History Channel.
Do you prefer writing fantasy/scifi? Why?
My novels are romances in a fantasy or scifi setting. Fantasy and scifi gives free rein to my imagination. I can create new worlds and imagine places here on Earth where the ancient gods and ancient civilizations still exist as in my novel Wind and Dreams.
Thank you for joining us, Linda. I look forward to your next book. Read the synopsis for DEEP MERGE: AN INTERSTELLAR ROMANCE below, then follow the link to grab a copy of your own.
Kaesah, a geneticist from an all-female species living on the other side of the galaxy, is stranded on Earth when her mate, who was vital in piloting their starship, dies. Kaesah must report the disturbing events on Earth that could impact the survival of her species. Kaesah has no choice but to find a human woman capable of Deep Merge, a process required to guide her ship through the galaxy and to her planet. Can Kaesah overcome her aversion to humans to form a bond with one?
Antonia Lorne, Toni, is mourning the death of her wife. Retiring to bed one night on the promise to herself to start living again, Toni will awaken in a starship with a new course for her life charted. Reluctantly, she enters an agreement with Kaesah to Deep Merge, not knowing all of the ramifications.
Two women, from different worlds, must learn to trust the other, not only for the future of their planets but also for their own future.
Buy Deep Merge: An Interstellar Romance
Linda North is an unabashed romantic who likes to place my characters in exotic settings. All my stories have happy endings. I live with my wife and furbabies in Florida.

Introducing Emersyn Grey
Hello everyone!
Today I am excited to introduce a new author to the lesbian fiction world, and give a copy of her book away, but first, a quick announcement. This Saturday March 20, from 9am-9pm EST, the Facebook group Lesbian Fiction Campfire is hosting “Herstory”, a day of readings and zoom Q&A’s from authors of historical fiction, myself included. Hop over and join the group HERE.

Now, without further ado, meet Emersyn Grey.
Hello, Emersyn, and welcome! Tell us a little about yourself.Hi! My name is Emersyn Grey. I’m a lesfic author who just released my debut novel, Hot For Teacher. I live in the Midwest with my wife and our three dogs. Most days I work in web design, but my free time is spent photographing nature and spending time with my family. I’ve recently gotten back into writing and am looking forward to the stories that are yet to come. Back when we could all leave the house and do stuff, my wife and I went to as many concerts as we could. Live music is a wonderful thing.
Yes, it is! I miss concerts. What made you decide to publish your first book?Hot For Teacher was released at the end of February. I decided to publish it because it was such a fun project, and I really wanted to share it with the world. It’s a steamy but sweet romance about Riley Stephens, a professor whose life is impacted by an outing to what she thinks is a strip club.
When she meets a beautiful blonde Mistress named Lakin, Riley’s immediately taken by her. She thinks it will be a one time visit, but Lakin reappears where Riley least expects it. The two must navigate their growing feelings amidst their busy lives in hopes of finding true love. It’s got some real steam to it at times, but it’s a love story at heart. I had a great time writing it, and I hope the readers enjoy it as well!
I’m sure they will. How long have you been writing?I wrote a lot when I was younger, but it wasn’t anything I really shared with people. Now that I’m older, I’ve picked it back up as a fun hobby. I’ve been writing for the last couple of years, but not consistently. I’ve only just started writing again with any sense of regularity. I look forward to having more stories to share soon.
What do you love most about writing?I love getting to discover the story as it unfolds. I don’t always have the story planned out when I start. Sometimes I only have a scene idea in my head, and the rest of the story just kind of pours itself out onto the page. It’s a fun process. Other times, I have an outline of the story for chapters in advance so I can set up something the way I want, and the story has to revolve around that. Its enjoyable to see how differently each story presents itself.
What is your favorite genre(s) to read?I’ve recently been re-immersing myself in lesbian romance. I’ve always been a Stephen King fan, so the horror/thriller genre is a favorite. I’m still trying to figure out the lesfic thriller that’s in my head, but it’s not fleshed out enough yet. I really can’t wait for that one to be real though. It’s a genre that I have not been able to find much.
Favorite show to binge watch?Oh man, there are too many! I’d have to say, Lost Girl is very dear to me. That show will always have a special place in my heart, and I’ll rewatch it any day. I watch a lot of Law and Order: SVU, but I don’t know if you would say it’s binge watching. I do enjoy watching true crime type shows on Netflix, so that’s been my latest couple of binges.
I’ve got a hell of a sweet tooth. Cookies, chocolate, sour candy… That’s my guilty pleasure. I know I shouldn’t have them, but they’re just so yummy! That’s pretty much the best way to bribe me if you need something, especially tech support, and my family knows this!
Noted! What are you working on next?I’m working on a story that’s been in my head for a while now but just hasn’t presented itself clearly enough. I’m finally putting some shape to it. This one will have a little more angst and drama, but it’s a love story when you get down to it. I’m a romantic at heart, so that’s what I hope to share with my readers.
Thank you so much for your time! I hope you all enjoy Hot For Teacher!

Interview with Author KJ, a Giveaway, and New Release News
Hello everyone!
The new year is well underway and it always brings new things to look forward to, so I’m kicking it off by announcing A Call To Justice, book 3 of the Sarah Sawyer series, will be released January 26, 2021 on Amazon!
I know…finally, right? But I think you’ll enjoy Sarah’s evolution here.
Gunslinger Sarah Sawyer has overcome her demons, vengeance-seeking relatives, and a loner streak as wide as the horizon to settle down out west with her partner, Jo. But peace seems too much to ask for with the influx of new settlers, illness, and brazen thefts stirring tensions.
But peace seems too much to ask for with the influx of new settlers, illness, and brazen thefts stirring tensions.
When a spate of white killings puts Native Americans in the crosshairs as the culprits, Sarah has a whole lot of questions and few answers she’s willing to swallow.
Driven by her desire to protect her town and root out injustice, Sarah reluctantly picks up the badge and seeks to reveal the truth.
Book three in the Sarah Sawyer series is an exciting Western that’s as down to earth as the dust on a tough rancher’s boots.
Top of the hat to Lee Winter for the fantastic synopsis!
You can keep up with all my latest news, download a free short story, and enter giveaways by subscribing to my monthly newsletter.
Speaking of newsletter giveaways…
Congratulations to Evelyn from Detroit, MI on winning the signed print copy of my new release! I sent an email, so please get back to me with mailing info.
This year I also want to return to some author interviews, so first up is best selling author K J. She hails from Australia and is known for her stories Kick Back, Art of Magic, and her Goldie and Lesfic Bard finalist, Coming Home.
KJ has also graciously agreed to giveaway an ebook copy of Coming Home, so see the end of the interview to find out how to enter.

Hello KJ. Welcome, and thank you for joining me. Since it’s January, I have to ask if you’ve set any goals or resolutions?
I feel silly amounts of pressure if I make resolutions. So, I guess my goals are to write and be.
If someone hasn’t read any of your books yet, which one do you recommend they start with?
Hmm. Probably ‘Coming Home’. It gives a very clear insight into what my writing style is like, which is kind of unique, I guess. I’ve been told so, anyway. My other books are still…me…but I chuck other stuff in, like magical realism, women’s football, dream sequences, or short stories. ‘Coming Home’ is the most traditional contemporary romance, I think.
Which character that you’ve written is most like you?
I put a bit of myself into all my characters. I think it’s impossible not to. The one that’s the most like me is Hanna, who has her own story in the little novella, ‘Home’. Then she appears briefly in ‘Learning To Swim’. Hanna is very much like me because ‘Home’ was written for my wife, and it’s a fictionalised version of when we met. But other than that, there are aspects from Sam Markson in ‘Coming Home’ that I resonate with.
What can you tell us about your WIP?
It’s a contemporary romance about a bike courier and an architect. I guess it’s an opposites attract sort of thing. And with all my books, there’s a pile of metaphorical references and humour and dialogue. All wrapped in my particular brand of story delivery. It’ll be titled ‘Change of Plans’.
Rather than telling us what you’d bring if you were stranded somewhere, how about sharing where you’d prefer to be stranded (assuming you had a choice)?
I would love to spend some time in a room with blank cream-coloured walls, dark blue carpet (the really short tuft version, but not quite industrial carpet squares), no window and a door that fits flush. The room is soundproof. There’s a bed. It’s only a single bed, but it’s super comfy. There’s a light in the ceiling and one on the bedside table. Both lights can be controlled from the bedside table. There’s a bathroom attached to the room, which has white tiles, and super-super-bright lighting. The shower is large but not like the sizes that seem to exist in novels. The towels are the type that start off so fluffy that they don’t absorb any water, but after a month or two of being washed, they get that tiny bit scratchy and that’s when they’re just right. In the room, there is a desk, which is a plain laminate IKEA style, and a really comfortable office chair. The desk and the chair face the door but are located across the other side of the room. On the desk is a stack of brand new lined journals, a collection of Parker pens weighted perfectly to my hand, my phone, and my laptop. There is unlimited internet access. The room is silent. That room. I could be stranded there.
Love it! That’s very specific and sounds like a great space. Probably where you could do this next question: What’s your favorite way to unwind after a long day?
Being somewhere quiet. Oh wow. Silence and stillness are essential for me, judging by these answers. But I can’t do the unwinding. I need to sit and wait for the world around me to unwind itself.
Is there a story/genre you’d love to write that you haven’t yet?
I’m very happy writing wlw romance. Maybe I could delve into murder mystery. I mean, I already killed a character in ‘Kick Back’. I’d have to think of reasons and motives, though. That’s complicated.
Thanks so much, KJ. Love these answers. For more of KJ’s work, or to follow her on social media, click the links below.

Reading, Writing, and Taking Care of You
Hello everyone!
I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted here and I hope that you are all finding ways to get through these crazy times. I have been doing alot of reading and focusing on my health. I wish I had some amazing news of a new release, but alas, like many of you, concentration has been lacking of late. I do have three stories in the works, though. For fans of my western, Sarah Sawyer’s third adventure is about half way through. Then, I have two modern day romances ongoing. There is also a scifi idea with some notes to try in the future. Fingers crossed one is ready before the end of the year.
If you’d like new material from me, I do have a free short story to download called The Chemistry Test when you sign up for my monthly newsletter. Sometimes I post excerpts in there or do giveaways. Also, you can view some recorded readings I have on my YouTube and if you are a Facebook user, the Lesbian Campfire Share has tons of author/reader book readings, Q&A’s and fun events to engage in.
Side note: I love it when readers find my older books! Thank you to LESBIreviewed for the wonderful review of Somewhere Between Love and Justice, Sarah Sawyer’s first book. I appreciate everyone who takes the time to post a review or to reach out and tell me what you think.
For anyone looking for a chance to turn all that reading into free books, be sure to check out Jae’s crossword challenges and Maggie’s Book Bingo on Facebook. Currently on Jae’s one of the question involes Sarah Sawyer. See if you can guess the right answer.
So, since I have been taking time to focus on my health, today I wanted to address a topic other than lesfic, one that is of growing importance to women around the world, especially now. Women are responsible for so much on a daily basis that we often put ourselves last. I have been guilty of that to the point I did land in the hospital five years ago. It was an eye opener. And it can happen to anyone at any age, especially the stay at home moms, whose daily schedules are most often overlooked since they are not in a “workplace.” But caring for a family is no easier task than running a large corporation and both women are equally as at risk.
Please welcome Dr. Candace McMillon-Dantley, author of the book Woman, Take Off Your Cape! who is here to help us better recognize the warning signs and give us tips to live a better quality of life.
Hello and thank you for taking the time to chat with me. First, I have to ask, s o many people have these kinds of moments when a realization strikes, myself included, but almost no one writes about it. Publishing a book is no small feat. What made you want to tackle the endeavor?
Thank you for taking the time to invite me. I would have to agree with you on this one. For me, an opportunity to write for a health and wellness website reignited the passion that I have for writing. I hadn’t written anything creatively in years, but I’ve always had a love for writing.
Writing the book started out as a “nagging” thought in my mind. Then, God spoke to me clearly and told me to write “Woman, Take Off Your Cape!” I knew that this book would bring to light what so many woman experience, but no one ever truly sees the struggle of wearing the cape. After realizing the positive impact it could have on women, I was determined to get it done.
This book is not just for the Go-Getter women who try to do it all, it is also for those in their circle. What advice would you give friends and family of those “Superwomen” to guide them on when help might be needed?
You are exactly right in saying that this book is just as much for the people who surround the cape-wearing woman. I would advise that the family and friends of the woman who saves everyone’s day is to offer to save hers. Don’t wait for her to ask you for help because she won’t. Don’t take “no” for an answer when you offer to pick up her kids or take her out to lunch. Look past when she says, “I’m fine,” and do something nice or thoughtful for her anyway.
These days, both men and women work more hours and health is on the decline all over America due to our lifestyle choices. What factors do you think make it harder for women to take initiative to address their own needs first? What are the signs that we need to take a step back?
I think that it’s harder for women to make their health and wellness a priority because so many people are depending on them. As a working woman, the team is counting on her to execute and deliver. As a mother, spouse, and friend she is nurturing, compassionate, and dependable.
Often times, she is the one who schedules the appointments, goes grocery shopping, and provides counseling to her friends – somewhere in between her morning coffee and lunch. By bedtime, she’s thinking of all the things she has to do the next day and she usually never makes the list. To summarize it, being all things to all people in her life is a major factor in women skipping out on self-care.
The are several signs that will reveal that you need to take off your cape. Your body is usually first to let you know that you need to take a step back. Some of the first hints your body will give are fatigue, depression, aches and pains.
Speaking of lifestyle choices, diet, exercise, and wellness are often set aside for time and convenience. What are a few easy ways people can make changes for the better?
The phrase, “lifestyle choices” is a hint that your health should be incorporated into your day-to-day routine. The idea of going to the gym and changing your diet all at once can seem overwhelming. So, I suggest that you make simple challenges that won’t feel like additional stress.
One thing that I incorporate i, only drinking water during the day and having one 8 oz drink of my choice at the end of the day. Another simple change is to incorporate more steps into your day by parking your car at the end of the lot or using a fitness tracker with remainders to walk after you’ve sat for an hour or more. I encourage you to make changes that can be accomplished on any day of the week.
Great suggestions. When you take off your cape, how do you like to spend your down time?
Currently, my “No Cape Zone” is a space in my garage where I work out for 30 to 45 minutes. Working out helps relieve my mental and emotional stress and it gives me a burst of energy to start my day.
Favorite guilty pleasure?
My favorite guilty pleasure is any brand of cookies and cream ice cream! To make the pleasure as guiltless as possible, I only use my “ice cream cup” when I eat it to control portions and to avoid overeating.
That’s a great idea, having a special serving size cup for those indulgent foods. Thanks for the tip! Do you have any plans to write more books?
It’s funny that you asked this. I don’t have any plans to write another book at the moment, but I do think that I have more to write that will help women in the near future.
Thank you for the insightful interview. If anyone is interested in her book, you can get it on Amazon. I highly recommend this one.
That’s all for now. I hope you enjoyed the interview and learned a few things to keep you and/or your family and friends healthy. Stay tuned, I will have a few lesfic authors coming up before year end. Until next time, stay safe, stay well, and happy reading!
S.W.

A Different Kind of March Madness
Hello everyone!
I hope you are all staying safe and healthy. This is definitely a time unmatched by any in history and I am certain we will come out of it with new perspectives. Hopefully, that includes being more respectful of one another.
For those who are still working outside of your homes, much thanks goes out to you. No job is too big or too small. So many times it feels as if we are in our own little bubbles, but everything we do is global. The ripples carry outward. I know that many of you are in a difficult position during this crisis, but stay strong and take as many precautions as you can. Millions are grateful for your effort, whether they know it or not.
On A Happier Note: In an effort to add a little levity to these trying times, I asked folks on Twitter to chime in a few ideas of how I could brighten your day. On Monday I chose one of them and recorded my first “Whiskey and a Reading” with a whiskey cocktail recipe and an excerpt from Somewhere Between Love and Justice.
I feel like Jo would be a tequila girl and Jade, maybe like a margarita (although I’m pretty sure she would drink anthing). I could definitely see Carter trying out some fruity craft beers that Sarah would call sacriledge.
What modern day drinks do you think the characters of SBLJ would enjoy?
That was fun, so I think I will do a few episodes from different books. I will also work on a few of the other ideas over the next few weeks, so feel free to offer some of your own. I am open to most anything, It’s really all about you.
Other things I’ve been working on: I have been adding to the couple of stories I have going on and I’ve decided to bring on Carsyn and Katie from The Chemistry Test short story as side characters in a new romance I’m working on. If you haven’t read that yet, it is available for free when you subscribe to my monthly newsletter. *The next one goes out tomorrow.
I have started a new script, a post-apocalyptic/sci-fi type film (ugh, I’m so bad with the genre labels). I am also tweaking my SBLJ script based on feedback from the competitions it has been in. I’ll share some screecaps of the script in my next newsletter. Maybe one day Sarah and Jo will make it to the big screen. I seriously still love the hell outta this artwork by Rafi DeSousa. She is amazingly talented! Check her out at @tsparklingblue

New Year, New Look!

Hello everyone and happy 2020!
I hope it’s off to a great start for you. Been pretty busy myself getting things set up for the year. Out with the old and in with the new…mostly. I have a new website design (thanks to Tracee Alley- @teamalley678 on Twitter in case you need a designer), a new logo (see above), some new ideas, the same old fitness goals (but this is the year), and an old computer makes that’s been revived after the newer one crapped out. Quite often, older is better, at least that’s what I keep telling myself every time I turn another year older.
I do plan to do some interviews this year, some on here, and others in my monthly newsletter. If you haven’t signed up yet, you can get all the latest updates as well as a free short story HERE
In case you missed it, Tara Scott and I had a chat about some of my favorite lesfic books on Les Do Books. Find out which one got me hooked on reading the genre.
Doing the podcast was lots of fun. I should do some more often. Or start my own. If only I had more time…
I was also honored to find out that “This Time” was named to Michelle’s best of 2018 list on The Lesbian Review. I truly love that story and I’m so happy others do as well. Thank you!
What’s happening this year? Well, there are more and more cons out there spreading the queer love, from being solely queer content, to having diversity programming in their tracks. I have been to a few and it’s been wonderful. I for one am happy to see the representation growing, especially so close to me. I try to support as many as I can. I hope many of you will do the same.
To kick the year off, since I will be a vendor at the first QFX con in Tampa this May, I wanted to visit with the wonderful crew putting on the event and get the scoop. If you haven’t heard yet, their slogan says it all: Inclusive. Diverse. Accessible. Queer. While their initials stand for Queer Fan Experience, they want everyone to feel comfortable attending and did not want those who were not yet out to have to explain the name. So, without further ado, let’s learn more about the QFX crew.

1. Putting on an event is hard work. What made you all decide to take on starting a con?
The executive team, myself (Holly), Nikki and Mel, have a lot of experience working fandom based conventions, and being friends, they thought it would be super cool to go in this together and create something great.
2. I’m a Floridian and thrilled to have this in my backyard. Why did you choose Tampa?
Well, there are a couple of queer-focused conventions on the west coast and New York City has one as well, but the southeast doesn’t really have anything so we thought it could be a good place to start in getting this type of con accesible to those who live in the region.
3. What do you want to set you apart from other cons?
Our commitment to being accessible, transparent and honest while also putting on an awesome inclusive event for everyone.
4. I’m hoping this is a con that will have a long, successful life. What are your long term goals to reach?
We want this to be a yearly event while also branching out into other avenues in media. We also have some other ideas in terms of other platforms we want to create for the community.
5. If you could have any guest (or several), who would be your dream guests?
Holly: BILLY PORTER. Nikki: Hailee Steinfeld. Mel: Eliza Dushku
6. Any hopes of getting trans guests?
Yes! We are working with a few folks behind the scenes and hope we are able to bring them on board.
7. What steps are you taking to help attendees with disabilities be able to enjoy the con? And is there a contact person for those needing special requests?
We have an accessibility coordinator, Declan, who is available now and will be on site for any questions concerns and accessibility needs. We take accessibility very seriously, and already have plans to make sure all our attendees are able to enjoy and access all parts of the convention. For more information, please check out our website at https://www.qfxevents.com/accessibility
8. I know a lot of programming is still being put together, but are there any panels you are excited about (excluding celebrity ones)?
We definitely have some surprises in-store that are more outside the box than traditional panels. If anyone wants to submit their own panel idea, our submissions are open!
9. When the last event is over and people are home the next day going through the dreaded con-withdrawal, what do you hope they’ll tell their friends about their QFXEast experience?
That they found a place where fandom is family, and they feel like they belong somewhere.
10. Any fun facts or anecdotes to share regarding the journey of QFXEast so far?
On the first site visit to the Hilton in Tampa, some of our team got adventurous with the Lime Scooters found all over downtown Tampa. We expect them to be popular during the convention, haha! Also, watch out for the stray chickens in Ybor City!

Too funny! I’d forgotten about the chickens there. Tampa is a great city and very queer friendly. Thank you to Holly, Mel, and Nikki for taking time from their very busy schedules to answer these questions. I hope many of you will be joining in the fun in Tampa May 29-31, 2020. I know I’m not the only one excited for the “Lost Girl” reunion. We’re getting the Faemily back together!
For more info on tickets, guests, and hotel, visit qfxevents.com. I need to get on those photo ops stat!
Before we conclude this edition, here’s a lovely look at our holiday vacation to Bend, Oregon. It is most definitely our happy place. That’s all for now, but don’t forget to sign up for the monthly newsletter and get a sneak peak at a new steamy scene I’ve worked up next Friday. There will also be giveaways and contests in the near future.
Until next time, all the best to you,
S.W.

Holiday Deals & Updates
Hello everyone!
This year has really flown by, and the last couple of months seemed to have made the jump to warp speed. I have managed to get some things done though, like a few ideas for new stories. I started work on a third Sarah Sawyer adventure. Finished a free fluffy short story I’ll be giving away (see details below). I tried my hand at Supergirl SuperCorp fanfic (and I’m excited about the Crisis crossovers), though Lost Girl and Doccubus is still my first love. I had my website redesigned by the wonderful Tracee Alley (I think she hit a homerun). I am finally back in the gym and making progress toward getting back in shape. Found a new love in the show “Stumptown.” I hope it sticks around a while as it’s fun, quirky, has a great cast, and there’s Colbie Smulders kicking ass with her usual charm.
Looks like I can set some great 2020 goals for writing and fitness. Maybe it will be the year I get some abs. But only if this is the year I can tell carbs we need to see less of one another. Relationships can be hard.
In the meantime, holiday eating is in effect. This week’s carb count has to be teetering around 10k with all the pie, pumpkin-chocolate chip bread, and cookies. I also found Evan Williams whiskey apple cider, which now joins their eggnog in my holiday must-have’s.
Anyway, I will have more for you soon. I hope you’ve all been doing well and for my American friends, Happy Thanksgiving!

Still on the fence? Allow me to tempt you with Chapter 1:
They hired them because they were the best. Sofia Delacruz had a special gift for bringing two people together and she and her business partner had just delivered, big time. Love was a wonderful thing and no greater reward existed than helping others make that once in a lifetime connection.
A victorious smile commanded her lips. Standing tall and confident, hands on hips in her favorite tailored navy pants with matching vest, she stared out the floor to ceiling window of their new twelfth floor corner office. The view of sunny Miami Beach never looked so good. Uniting Duke Cash and Alicia Hornbrook had been no easy task and she wasn’t ashamed to bask in a rare moment of pride.
Duke had been their first high profile client, the best hitter in the major leagues and star of the Miami Sands. Alicia, the team owner’s daughter, had sworn to never date a ballplayer, much less marry one. And for good reason. Ballplayers were often referred to as grown men playing a boy’s game who, on occasion, acted like ill-behaved children themselves.
Then, there was Duke Cash, who had embraced that stigma and taken it to a new level. His reputation alone had been a monstrous mountain to scale. But scale it, she had. With pick and rope in hand, Sofia had slowly, patiently, continued to climb. Despite each slip in Duke’s demeanor and every avalanche of failed opportunity due to the sabotaging of her plans with a not-so-brilliant thought of his own, she finally reached the peak.
It had required a heart to heart with the stubborn, brooding slugger to make it happen—why had he enlisted her services if he hadn’t planned to listen? Lord knows, there had been a number of clients who never had, but to her surprise, Duke had experienced the all-important moment of clarity. Soon after, she’d found a way for him to break the ice with the woman he’d been head over heels for and the sparks could be seen throughout the city. When the pair were together, there was no denying the match was true.
How could two people floating in the same social circle miss such an explosive connection? The thought had always boggled her mind. Heck, if he hadn’t come to her, they’d still be orbiting one another—Alicia keeping him a moon’s distance away and Duke helplessly reaching for the stars like a child on a dark summer night.
A deep sense of fulfillment rose in Sofia’s chest, then did a slow roll through her body like the very waves she stood admiring. The feeling never got old. Every time she helped another couple find the same joy she once knew, it was like experiencing a contact high. The crazy mix of pride, satisfaction, and exhilaration left her feeling the effects for days, though it was always tinged with envy and laced with the slightest touch of sadness. Her hand moved to the pendant that hung from her neck. Held delicately between two fingers, she gently rubbed across the golden bands reshaped into a heart, inset with the profile of a half moon. A diamond nestled beside it as a star.
Tiny flashes of memories would peek out from the corners of her mind whenever she’d see a happy couple. The somber mood would last only the briefest of milliseconds before she would once again be grateful she’d ever had the chance to experience a love that pure and true. Those days seemed like a lifetime ago. But like all bad things, she believed, if you persevered, you would find something good.
And she had.
Her journey through the darkness had revealed her true purpose. Things weren’t always easy, but she had made it to the other side. Now she was happy. She and her best friend, Reyna Jha, co-owned a thriving business and got paid to help others discover love. Life was good.
“We. Are. Ah-mazing,” Reyna melodically strung together the words with a rising pitch, ripping Sofia from her moment of joyful serenity. For a petite woman, she sure could make an entrance. “Yet another satisfied customer, Doc.”
Sofia turned and Reyna held up an ornate-looking cream envelope—another wedding invite. Always wonderful when a match continued to flourish. Great for business too.
Reyna dropped the envelope on Sofia’s desk, then added, “Margo and Van. That was quite the interesting pair. A socialite who loves to hit the mall and an introvert who only shops online. Damn nice job there, Sof.”
Reyna set her hands on her hips, highlighting the shapely curve of her waist that led to a tight, gray, knee-length skirt. Her “power stance”—that’s what Reyna had always called it—and the pearly white smile that accompanied it would get her anything she wanted eight times out of ten. Silly as Sofia had thought naming a pose, she had witnessed it happen often enough to know it was true. Seemed they were both brimming with confidence today.
The pendant was gently set back against her skin. Sofia abandoned the tranquility of a picture-perfect beach day and slid with grace into her black leather executive chair. A wry grin stretched her lips as she leaned back and clasped her hands behind her head with swagger. She spun toward her best friend of fifteen years. “They don’t call me the Love Doctor for nothing.”
“Indeed.” Reyna laughed, tossing her long, straight black hair over her shoulder. The dark color contrasted nicely against her olive skin tone and her white sleeveless blouse. “Let’s go celebrate. I’m in need of a drink and a stiff one. And I’m not talking about the drink.” A twinkle of mirth gleamed in light brown eyes the shade of a fine scotch.
“Oh gag,” Sofia groaned, but the chuckle that followed betrayed her display of disgust.
“Seriously though,” Reyna’s words fell out with a heavy breath. “If I don’t find ‘the one’ soon, I may enlist your help myself.”
“Rey, I’m not the Millionaire Matchmaker. I don’t recruit love interests. You know that. I merely help two people who keep missing one another to connect.”
“Potato, poh-tato. I’m sure you could make it happen for me.”
With a roll of her eyes, Sofia brushed off the vote of confidence. Her best friend was rather picky and despite replaying the very same conversation monthly, Reyna preferred to play the field. “I don’t know.” A sly grin took shape. “Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and the Palm Beaches have a lot of bodies to search since you go either way.”
Reyna narrowed her eyes at the joke, but then a heavy sigh filled the room. “True.” Her posture sagged as a pout pulled at her lips. In a blink, she shrugged it away. “But, guy or gal, I’ll know when it’s right. I’m sure of it. Just like I knew you and I would be lifelong best friends the minute we met in tenth grade science.”
“Because you wanted me to help you pass.” Sofia grinned at Reyna’s unamused frown.
“No, it’s because I know a gem when I meet one.” Her eyes held a glimmer as she smiled. “Now come on, we can wing-woman one another.”
“Thanks, but I’m fine,” Sofia said, dismissing the request. “I could go for a stiff one though, of the liquid variety.”
“Sof-“
“Please, Rey, not tonight.” Irritation popped her bubbles of happiness. She abruptly stood and stomped toward the door. “I’m fine. And it’s not like I never date,” she added with a huff. Her fingers sifted through short, wavy locks.
“Who’s talking about a date? Just get laid. Have some fun.” Reyna slumped the minute the words left her mouth. Sadness chased away her smile. The air between them grew as heavy as the proverbial elephant in the room.
“I do have fun,” she snapped. Would the scrutiny of how she lived her life ever end? “And it’s not like I haven’t slept with anyone since…” A tired sigh filled the silence. “Let’s just drop it. I’m happy, okay?”
“Okay. Fine.” Reyna moved to her desk. She lifted her suit jacket to her shoulder and one by one, slipped her arms in. “What are you feeling tonight?” she asked as she approached, all judgement removed from both her words and her expression. “O’Malley’s? Maybe, The Fish Bowl? Oh, how about that trendy place, Rafael’s on the Beach?”
A soft smile formed as the cloud lifted, sending Sofia back into a celebratory mood. Tonight was supposed to be about their success, but was there any harm in mixing in a little research? Nah. “You know I love O’Malley’s, but in the interest of adventure and checking out new date places, let’s try Rafael’s.”
“Perfect. You got first round.” Reyna threw her a knowing wink.
“I believe I usually get stuck with all the rounds.” Sofia’s soft laugh carried throughout the empty room.
“That’s because you love me and I do such a kick ass job for you.”
Tipping her head left, then right, Sofia shuffled her lips side to side in contemplation. When Reyna’s smile dissolved into a taut line, a teasing grin took over and Sofia said, “I guess.”
Arms folding tight across her chest like a pouting child, Reyna muttered, “You’re mean.”
“Aww. Buck up, buttercup. I do love you.” Sofia leaned in and wrapped an arm around Reyna’s waist, pulling her closer until they were hip to hip. Though Reyna was several inches shorter, high heels put her on even ground with Sofia’s five-foot, seven-inch frame. “And I’m grateful you never used that degree in civil engineering.”
“I don’t even know why I got that degree.” Reyna shook her head and laughed. “I’m glad you gave up working in a boring lab and put my suave social and I.T. skills to use.”
Sofia hummed and lifted her eyes to the ceiling, chasing away the memories of what had sparked the career change. “Yeah well,” she returned her gaze to Reyna, “this kind of chemistry has been far more rewarding than the kind in a lab, so I guess we’re a match made in heaven.”
“That we are. Now let’s celebrate.”
Thank you all for reading. I cannot wait to hear what you think, so please review or drop me a line after you finish.

April 10, 2019
Author Meet & Greet: M. Ullrich
I hope April is treating you all well. We’ve been fortunate to have some cooler weather in Florida, but summer is upon us as it is heating up in a hurry. As for me, I’ve been busy, busy finishing up my next book, The Love Doctor. I’m hoping for a May release, but more details will be available soon, including a look at the cover.
Unfortunately, I won’t be at ClexaCon this year, but I look forward to hearing all about it on Twitter and such. Hope you all have a fabulous time. On the up side, I will be hitting Avengers opening weekend and I cannot wait! I may even skip work and see it opening show. Shhhhh!
This month, I decided to steal a page from Clare Lydon’s newsletter and give you the bullet points of my life at the moment.
Cups of coffee:
None. It’s not my thing, but I do like the flavor and have a coffee flavored-protein shake. I don’t do much caffeine though. I guess I’m just naturally peppy. My wife doesn’t understand that at all.
Steps:
I don’t know. My Fitbit broke (again) and I’m not much into apps on the phone. I did, however, get back into workouts and made it to 1300 steps on the step machine. Woot!
Important stuff:
I was excited to celebrate International Whiskey Day (March 27) with an Old Fashioned made with Buffalo Trace (a rarity in my parts) thanks to the dedication of Amanda Brady, who had so very graciously hand delivered it during her trip to Florida. Thanks a billion!
Random Musings:
In my first 44 years of life, I still haven’t figured out how to fold a fitted sheet (much to my wife’s dismay) and I’ve decided I don’t care. The second half of my life shall be dedicated to figuring out how to make a proper crepe.
Deep thoughts:
My wife and will celebrate 22 years together next month and she still insists I’m hard to please. I disagree. I eat cold leftovers, am always easily entertained by chocolate of Florida Gator sports, don’t care how the clothes get folded (or fitted sheets), and can easily find something to watch on a streaming site. Easy enough to me. Still, she sticks around, so I guess none of them are deal breakers. Whew!
That’s enough about me. Now, on to the fun stuff.
INTERVIEW TIME!
This month I have the pleasure of interviewing two-time Goldie Award finalist and dapper dresser, M. Ullrich. She has penned five romance novels and been featured in The Advocate where she talks about her book, Love at Last Call. I just finished reading Fake It Till You Make It and highly recommend her work, so take one for a spin this weekend!

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to answer a few burning questions. First, I have to say I love your sense of style. What’s your favorite clothing store and where do you find those great blazers?
First and foremost, thank you for asking me to do this AND the compliment! I love fashion and putting together an outfit I feel good and confident in. I do most of my shopping at Express, and recently at Hollister. Some of my blazers came from Target. I’m always on the look out for clothes that fit me well, and catch my eye.
I’ve read fanfiction was one of the things that drew you to writing. Which fandom was it? Did you write any?
Rizzoli & Isles! I shipped Rizzles so hard from day one. I wrote about nine different works for that fandom and they are all still out there on fanfiction.net. I recently went back to look at them and it’s interesting to see the way my skill and craft changed along the way. Sometimes I think about taking them down, but I know they brought many people joy so I’ll leave them there for as long as the website is up and running.
Captain Marvel was marvelous (sorry, couldn’t help myself). What would you do if you had her powers?
Never, ever struggle to open a jam jar again. Never be afraid to walk alone in a dark parking lot again. And I would do whatever I could to use those powers to better this world.
Like you, I struggle to find time to write around work and life. What is your writing process like when you do sit down?
I do most of my writing on the weekends, so I stuff myself with an enormous amount of breakfast foods, sit down, and hope for the best. Coffee is a must, and some sort of candy/snack, too.
What’s most frustrating to you about the Wynonna Earp situation?
Everything! We were promised a 4th season and now we’re just in limbo. There’s no news, no updates, and the cast is just as eager to get started as we are to see them report to set. And now we’re seeing shows like “One Day At a Time” being cancelled…all we can do is keep fighting.
What’s your all-time fav fandom and what drew you in?
Wynonna Earp and the Earpers. Without a doubt. Aside from the show being clever, funny, heartfelt, inclusive, and just freaking rad, Earpers are the kindest and most genuine people. It’s a family.
What books are you currently reading?
I wish I had more time to read! I find it very difficult to read while I’m writing, and I’m almost always working on my next book. I just recently had a break between books, but I was working on a screenplay and in that headspace. I do have a list of titles I’m hoping to tackle soon-ish.
Is there a genre you haven’t tackled yet that you’d like to take a shot at?
My books will always be a romance at heart, but I do like to toy with sub-genres. I haven’t written anything in the crime/mystery category, but maybe one day…
Tell us about your latest release.
Pretending in Paradise is a fake relationship romance with just the right amount of opposites attract. Caroline Beckett is recently hired at Travel Wisdom, a one-stop travel site, and the home of brutally honest and popular reviewer/blogger, Emma Morgan. After an incident, Emma is only allowed to go on her next assignment If Caroline tags along. Things wouldn’t be so bad, if the next assignment wasn’t at a couples only resort that requires them to play the role of loving, happy couple.
I read you outgrew notebooks for you next book and bought a white board. Any hints on what it’s about? Also, is a whiteboard big enough? Maybe a wall board is in order?
This next book is TOP SECRET for now. But the whiteboard seems to be adequate, even though I’d definitely prefer wall board!
What’s the one thing you cannot live without? (food, item…)
Music. I’d have music playing every minute of every day if I could.
Any fun facts you care to share about yourself?
-I absolutely love the phrase “small potatoes”.
-When I’m very nervous I make strange noises and/or bad jokes. Nonstop. You should see me at doctor’s appointments or before a reading!
-I love watching sushi be made. It’s such a beautiful art form, but I don’t want to eat the stuff. No thank you.
-I’m superbly lazy. It’s almost a talent at this point.
-I start dreaming about my morning coffee in the afternoon the day before before.
-I’m not allowed to buy blue socks anymore.

Your questions answered and more!
Hello again everyone!
I hope March has been kind and that those of you in the stormy areas are faring well. I am happy to report some great progress on my next book, The Love Doctor (another sneak peek below). The talented Cindy Bamford is hard at work on the cover and I’ve had nice feedback from some Beta readers. Now I am polishing up my final draft for editing. It won’t be long now boys and girls.
In other news, I’ve won my latest battle with my technology and have my screenwriting software up and running again (I hate Windows 10). I am looking into freshening up my website and getting a newsletter going. I managed to workout 7 of the last 10 days without major setbacks and am excited to say I did 7 straight minutes on this elliptical-like thingy that’s like running in water. Whew! It’s a real ass kicker! Sadly, however, I haven’t made it past the 1:45 min mark on my Stealth Plankster. Speaking of killers, my abs are begging me to give up. But I’m nothing if not persistent. Gotta have goals…
Captain Marvel- just see it. Then, see it again. There’s nothing I don’t love about it. Heck, I hope to see it a third time in theatres. Brie Larson nailed it. Just a few weeks until we can see her again with the Avengers and I couldn’t be more excited. [image error]
Also, I was somehow inspired to try my hand at a poem. Not sure where it came from, but I’m pretty proud of myself for doing something new. I’m hoping it means I’ve unlocked some creativity on a couple of stalled ideas. Love to hear your thoughts on it and I had also tweeted for others to offer role models that embody strength. If you have one in mind, please share it here, twitter or facebook.

Okay, so on to answering reader questions. These have been submitted over the last couple of months. Thank you to everyone who sent them in.
Why do you like to blog?
To be honest, it was a real struggle at first, but then I began to enjoy the challenge of coming up with topics or interview questions. Blogs can be anything, and I am all about the freedom to roam.
Is writing something you’ve always done? Did you write as a child?
Not really. Only things required for school, so short stories and such. I was all about sports and was always outside and on the move. Writing popped up out of the blue six years ago and I’ve been working steadily on improving ever since. I really enjoy the problem solving of getting from point A to point B. It is also great to step out of the real world for a bit and create a world I’d like to live in.
Who are your favorite authors?
I’ve found some wonderful lesfic writers, with Lee Winter, Missouri Vaun, and Jae being just a few I’ve really enjoyed. There’s so many more I want to explore, though. Outside of LGBTQ, I enjoy Kurt Vonnegut, Stephen King, Edgar Allen Poe. I do enjoy some autobiographies on occasion, but mostly (when not reading for work) I read to escape–so sci-fi, spy, and happily ever afters.
Have you ever considered writing an otherworldly paranormal story?
I wouldn’t rule anything out if I had a solid idea. It would be a wonderful challenge. I do actually have a post-apocalyptic idea and a sci-fi one, but needs a bunch of development.
Favorite drink?
As far as non-alcoholic goes, I mostly drink water these days, though I do enjoy a Coke, ginger ale, or root beer on occasion. Oh, and Limeade in summer. As far as spirits go, I love whiskey drinks. Preferably without soda. Old Fashioned. Whiskey Smash. Whiskey Sour. Or a good Scotch.
What makes you most comfortable when you write? ie: place, music…
Oh boy…this may be weird but I actually like my headphones on and standing at a table. Or, when I can write in the morning, all snuggly in my robe in my office.
How do you get all the feelings in your writing? Are they personal experience? Other people’s experience?
Great question. There’s definitely some personal experience in there. There’s also “putting myself in someone else’s shoes.” Research. Movies. TV. Something a friend went through. They all shape ideas. I always struggle with whether or not they come out right, but like everything else in life, there is no “one size fits all.” Like my current work in progress about a widow finding love again, I’ve learned there’s no right answer, but everyone has an opinion, and in that, everyone has had different experiences. So, I try to go with what I hope to convey in the story as well as what feels right for that character. With that said, being new’ish to writing, it has definitely been one of the biggest areas I’ve worked on in my writing.
Which of your stories is your favorite?
Oh boy…I do love Sarah Sawyer, so the westerns are probably my first love, but my last book, This Time, is really special to me. The idea that love goes on and on just gives me hope that what I am lucky enough to have here carries on, and if by chance it ends poorly, there will be another shot at happiness. I know it’s a touchy subject for many, but whether that next chance comes in heaven or another life, it makes no difference to me.
I’m also finding a soft spot for my newest book which deals with the topic of losing a spouse. I’m hoping I did the topic justice and that maybe, possibly, this book will bring a little light into someone’s life when they read it.
Thank you again for the questions. Now here’s another scene from my WIP.
Excerpt from The Love Doctor:
Warm lips on skin scattered soft kisses across the expanse of her stomach. Sofia arched up, her body aching for so much more. “I’ve missed you so much,” she whispered, then followed with a moan that rippled of pleasure.
“I’ve been right here. I will always be right here.”
A wet tongue traced slow circles around her hardened nipple, setting every cell on fire. “Please stay with me, Kylar. Don’t leave me again.”
“I promised you forever and then some.”
Mouths melded. Tongues danced. Delicate fingers found their way to a familiar place, one that lit Sofia up like an inferno and warmed her from head to toe, swirling in her belly and filling her soul with unimaginable love and happiness. They belonged together. Even after so long apart, nothing felt more right. But Sofia would have to wait before she could truly hold her wife again.
Her breath fell hostage to the onslaught of emotions. Tears pricked the corner of her eyes. A stray broke free.
Sofia bolted upright in bed, ripped from sleep by the pain of a love lost. Dark bangs fell across her eyes, doing nothing to corral the tears stampeding down flushed cheeks. Heavy sobs struck like earthquakes, rendering her powerless to do anything besides let them run their course.
It had all felt so real. The scorching trail of Kylar’s fingers continued to heat her skin even as the dream faded. That sweet, fruity taste of the Napa blush her wife had sipped each night still lingered on her lips. Her smell, so sweet with hints of vanilla and honey, tickled her nose and sent her heart to the races. She dared glance at the picture on her nightstand of their wedding day. Perfect blushing brides. The picture of happiness and vitality. Then one day, it was all gone.
Sofia fell back, collapsing onto the soft pillow-top and then rolled onto her side, covering her head with her extra pillow to shut out the rest of the world. It had been a long time since she’d had a dream that intense and it rocked her to her core. A piece of her was gone. Loneliness and pain set in, something she had long since overcome. Or so she’d believed.
She despised feeling so weak, so helpless, so incomplete. Her body shuddered as a ragged breath escaped. Closing her eyes and taking slow, deep breaths, she fought to relax, but one question kept repeating in her mind—will I ever feel whole again?

There it is, another sneak peek at what’s to come. More details on release dates when I have them, but we are getting closer. Hope you enjoyed the Q & A and I am always happy to answer questions at anytime. Just hit me on one of the many options to connect.
Until then, thank you for reading and I wish you all the best,
SW
