The plot of Death Lives Across The Hall, for example, came from one particularly nasty conflict I had with a neighbor (I freely admit that I never have been and never will be a good apartment dweller.) Something I said in passing about the neighbor was taken to be threatening (it was absolutely NOT intended to be so.) I later said to my wife, "You realize if anything DOES happen to her, though, I'll be suspect number one?" And there was the germ of the idea for Death Lives Across The Hall.

Also, there's the mystery of how I constantly write up very detailed grocery lists...and then forget to bring them to the grocery store. If anyone can solve that for me, I'd really appreciate it.(less)

There's a children's mystery story I've got rolling around in my head, so I'm going to revisit some of the classics (Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Three Investigators) for research. I'm willing to take suggestions as well. (less)

To Outline or Not to Outline?

Occasionally, I’m asked about various aspects of my writing process. One question that pops up consistently on these inconsistent occasions is: do you outline or do you make it up as you go? This is a reasonable question and one that is debated among writers. The answer is simple and frustrating at the same time: Yes.

There are drawbacks and benefits both to outlining and to winging it. Frequently, Read more of this blog post »
