Used to describe a pathological home sickness, it was first applied to soldiers returning from the Napoleonic wars and later to victims of train wrecks. Unable to cope with the difficulties of the present, people would long for the past - specifically a version of the past that they recalled as easy and always happy - to the point that they could not function.
Today "nostalgia" refers to wistful, bittersweet memories, or a fondness for items that represent a time gone by. I am happy to "suffer" from this type of nostalgia.
But I am frustrated by a stubborn group of folks for whom the past was always better and brighter.
I want there to be a place in the collective conversation of the world to say, "this happened, and it stank" while still seeing some humour and some hope for all that is yet to come. (less)
