PERSPECTIVES is published!

For the past few months I've been working on a very exciting project with my friend and fellow author Darcia Helle. As well as being friends with Darcia I have always admired her writing. She is a natural storyteller and she has a knack of being able to tell a story in such a way that the reader is fully engaged and can visualise the characters and the action.

I was approached by a photographer friend of mine in February. Martin David Porter is the photographer who took the photo that I used for the cover of Delusion and Dreams

Martin contacted me in February suggesting a collaborative project where he would send me 10 photos and I could write short stories inspired by the pictures. I was still editing my collection Far Away In Time, and juggling my day job with that... I really thought it would be too much to take on. I didn't want to turn down the opportunity though because I love writing short stories and it sounded like a fun challenge.

I asked Martin if I could add another writer, so then I'd only have to write half the stories, less time commitment. He agreed. My obvious choice for the writer to join me on the project was Darcia Helle. I knew she would easily be able to write some excellent stories. The only thing I didn't know was whether she had time to commit to the project. I was happy when she agreed to join me and was as excited as me to begin work on the project.

Martin send me 10 photos. To make it fair, as the photos were numbered in a dropbox, I asked Darcia to pick 5 numbers at random and then sent her the photos that matched those numbers.

Over the next few weeks we wrote the 10 stories. In fact, Darcia was so inspired that she wrote her stories in record time and asked for another photo! We ended up writing 6 stories each.

We had so much fun with this collection that we are already working on a second book. We are planning a series of books, The Mind's Eye Series.

For the second book, Darcia, Martin, and I will be joined by a second photographer, Helle Gade, who is also a poet. Helle will be contributing 6 photographs and 3 poems. Her poems will be inspired by Martin's photographs.

We will also be joined by another poet, Ben Ditmars. He's writing 3 poems inspired by Helle's photographs.

Two more authors will be joining us to contribute 3 short stories each, inspired by Helle and Martin's photos. Jason McIntyre and J. Michael Radcliffe.

With such talented artists joining us, I am very excited and looking forward to reading all the poems and stories.

The big news right now though is that Perspectives, the first book in the Mind's Eye Series, is now published and available in eBook and paperback formats!

The cover photo was taken by Martin David Porter, and the graphic design was done by Jason McIntyre.

My writing year

As we approach the end of 2014, I thought it would be nice to look back at my writing year.

This time last year I had no idea that I would be involved in an exciting short story series. The Mind's Eye Series started with an idea put forward by a photographer friend of mine, Martin David Porter (https://www.facebook.com/MartsArtsPho...). He said he had an idea for a book and asked if he could send me ten photos and I could write ten stories, each one inspired by one of the photos. I'd used one of Martin's photos before, for the cover of my book Delusion and Dreams

When Martin asked me if I'd like to take part in the project, I really wanted to because it sounded like a challenge, but I was busy editing my collection Far Away In Time. I asked if I could bring another writer on board and we could each write 5 stories. Martin agreed so I asked Darcia Helle and she was also interested in the project. That's when Perspectives was born.

We started writing the stories in February and by April we had published the book! It was so much fun to write that we decided to ask some other writers to join us and make it a series of books.

For the second book in the series, Reflections, we were joined by Ben Ditmars, Jason McIntyre, Helle Gade, and J. Michael Radcliffe. Now we had poems as well as short stories, and Helle is also a photographer, so she provided some of the photos.

We are currently working on book 3 in the series, as yet untitled. I've written two stories for that one.

As well as the Mind's Eye Series this year, I also published my collection of short stories Far Away In Time in March.

This collection of 8 tales includes dark fiction, mystery, and fantasy.

This year, I've also been editing my novel A Time to Tell (originally published in 2006). I thought it was the right time for a second edition of the book as I'd ended the contract with the publisher who originally published it, so that I could self-publish the book. When I read through it, I realised how much my writing has changed since I wrote it, and I wanted to edit it so that I could use what I've learned from my writing to hopefully improve the book. It's currently with my beta readers and I hope to publish that early next year.

It has a lovely new cover, designed by Aeternum Designs: http://aeternumdesigns.com/

I've also written a new novel this year. It's called 'In The Web Of Dreams And Lies'. It has elements of horror, comedy, romance, and paranormal.

I'm currently editing the book and it will hopefully be published sometime next year.

I'm looking forward to writing more in 2015!

Update on my writing

I'm working on a few different projects at the moment.

1. "Triptychs" - What is that? I hear you ask. Well, I had to google the word when it was first suggested as a title for the upcoming anthology I'm working on with a few fellow writers. J. Michael Radcliffe suggested it, and when I found out what it means, I thought it was perfect for the book.

Triptychs will be the 3rd book in the Mind's Eye Series. Perspectives and Reflections, the first two books in the series were published last year. This is a series of anthologies where authors/poets write their story/poem inspired by a photograph.

The reason we're calling the 3rd book "Triptychs" is because there will be 3 poems/stories for each of the photographs featured in the book. Definition of "triptych": "a set of three associated artistic, literary, or musical works intended to be appreciated together".

I've written 2 new short stories for the collection, and there will also be stories from: Darcia Helle, J. Michael Radcliffe, Jason McIntyre, Julie Elizabeth Powell, Eden Baylee, Lisette Brodey, Marc Nash, Geoffrey David West, and Jay Finn. Poems will be contributed by Helle Gade and Ben Ditmars.

Photographs in the collection were taken by Martin David Porter and Helle Gade.

The anthology is almost finished. I'll have more news about that soon.

2. While we're on the subject of short stories, I will have a new short story collection out sometime this year (I say that optimistically as I am trying to fit it in between other projects!). This one is called 'Lost and Found'. One of the stories is called 'Lost and Found', but the collection will include some short stories I wrote in the '90s, which I thought were lost because they were on an old floppy disk and I couldn't retrieve them; recently I found typed copies in a drawer at home while cleaning (this is proof that I need to clean up more often!).

I was very happy to find them again after so many years, especially after thinking they'd been lost. So I thought that title would be very fitting for the collection. So far I've only typed up and edited one of the stories, so it may be a while before the book is ready to be published.

3. A Time to Tell - I'm working on a second edition of the novel. It was originally published in 2006 but is no longer available in paperback, so I'm soon going to release a revised/re-edited version in e-book and paperback. Watch this space for news.

4. My new novel will hopefully be ready for publication sometime this year. I wrote the first draft it in just under two months last year, which is the quickest I've ever written a novel. It usually takes me about 6 months. I've read over the first draft and done an initial edit, but will need to read it over again before sending to my editor. The novel is called 'In the Web of Dreams and Lies'. It's part thriller/horror, part romance/contemporary fiction, with a splash of humour and paranormal. I have already designed a cover for it, but will wait to reveal that nearer to the publication date.

Cover Reveal: Triptychs - Book 3 in The Mind's Eye Series

I'm very excited to announce that book 3 in The Mind's Eye Series will soon be available for pre-order at Amazon! It's in the final formatting stages at the moment :)

The book is called "Triptychs". The definition of the word is: "a set of three associated artistic, literary, or musical works intended to be appreciated together."

In the book, you will find eight photographs and three stories and/or poems which were inspired by each photograph. It was a bit of an experiment to see how similar/different the stories inspired by the same photo would be. As with all the books in the series, writers were allocated the photographs at random and were not given any information by the photographers.

The writers involved in the project are: Darcia Helle (who, like me, has been involved in the series from the start and has written stories for Perspectives and Reflections); J. Michael Radcliffe, Ben Ditmars, Helle Gade, and Jason McIntyre, who all wrote stories/poems for Reflections. New writers who joined us for Triptychs: Lisette Brodey, Eden Baylee, Marc Nash, Julie Elizabeth Powell, Jay Finn, and Geoffrey West.

Photographers involved in the series: Martin David Porter and Helle Gade.

Each writer has contributed two stories or poems. Everyone has different writing styles, so you'll find fantasy stories, suspense, dark fiction, literary fiction, experimental prose, and everything in between!

Here's the beautiful cover, which was designed by Jason McIntyre (from one of Helle Gade's photographs). Jason is one of the writers, but is also a talented graphic designer. He also provided the blurb for the book.

My two stories for this collection are called "Glimmer Siluridae" and "Lost in You".

The first one is a fantasy tale and the second a more reflective, dark fiction story.

You can find Perspectives and Reflections (the first two books in the series) at the following links (available in eBook and paperback)

Perspectives:

Reflections:

I'll let you know when Triptychs is available for pre-order! :)

Short Story Month

May is International Short Story Month.

Those of you who know my own writing and who follow my blog will already know how much I love reading and writing short stories.

I have written a few collections of short stories.

I also have a story in the collection Murder, Madness, and Mystery

More recently, I have been contributing stories to the Mind's Eye Series.

Perspectives by Darcia Helle Triptychs (Mind's Eye Series Book 3) by Darcia Helle Reflections by Darcia Helle

Book four in that series is coming soon with 2 new short stories from me.

I'm also currently editing my latest collection of short stories, 'Lost and Found'. Look out for that later in the year.

I'm happy that there is a month to celebrate the short story form because this type of fiction is often neglected in favour of novels.

I think short stories are perfect for the way we live these days. Finding time for reading is a luxury. If you pick up a short story you can often finish reading it in one sitting. That means you don't have to remember what happened when you last read it. With novels, if you don't get time to read and go for 2 or 3 days without picking it up, it's easy to forget what happened, who the characters are, etc. etc.

Aside from all that, some of the best works of fiction I've ever read have been short stories.

I'm going to recommend some of my favourites and hope you'll try at least one. (Click on the covers to find out about the books.)

Update on my writing

A Time to Tell (second edition) is with my proofreader. As soon as it's back I'll make the final adjustments and send it for formatting. It'll eventually be available in eBook and paperback.

I've made a book trailer for the new book and am looking forward to revealing that soon.

I'm also currently editing my new collection of short stories, which is called 'Lost and Found'. There are about 6 stories in the collection. One of them is a new story and the others were found after I thought they were lost (hence the title!). They were written in the '90s and were on a floppy disk. The disk became corrupted so I couldn't retrieve them, but then I found printed versions of the stories in a drawer at home! I've since edited them and updated them. I'm hoping to send them to an editor soon.

Other than that, I've written 2 new short stories inspired by photos for the Mind's Eye Series anthology - book 4. When all the writers are ready, we'll be announcing more about that.
