Heb je ooit een aardeekhoorn gezien met volle wangen en je afgevraagd: wat zit daar allemaal in? Als je nieuwsgierig bent waarom deze kleine wezentjes eten opslaan in hun wangen, dan ben je niet de enige! Aardeekhoorns staan bekend om hun schattige, uitpuilende wangzakken, maar er zit veel meer achter die bolle snoetjes dan je op het eerste gezicht zou denken.

Waarom slaan tamias voedsel op in hun wangen?

Tamias hebben een goede reden om hun wangen vol te stoppen — ze zijn de ultieme snackverzamelaars van de natuur! In tegenstelling tot mensen, die zakken of tasjes gebruiken om spullen mee te dragen, hebben tamias ingebouwde opslagplaatsen: elastische wangzakjes.
