Extra Life 2016 Play Schedule
This year Viv, some friends, and I have been participating in the Extra Life gaming charity. Similar to running a 5k, the charity works by people donating to players who vow to play 24 hours of video games. And players join up into teams to pool the donations, cheer each other on, and compete for bragging rights in raising the most money.
Our team is called So Many Levels (after the D&D Vidcast). All money goes to local Children’s Miracle Networks hospitals.
The hardcore play 24 hours straigh...

Blogging Known Style
I’m testing out the Known platform for blogging. All that means for this site is that all new posts will now be at http://blog.chooch.us. I’ll slowly move previous posts over there. For now, they’re under the “Articles” menu up top.
Edit 02-03-2015 – for a number of reasons I’m closing the Known experiment down. I never got around to porting past posts over, so now I just need to move the new posts I had made there back here… clear?

Rest in Peace
Patrick Gail Holyfield passed away on August 20th, 2014 at the age of 46 after an all too brief battle with cancer. He died in his home surrounded by friends and family.
Throughout his life, Patrick has loved sports and speculative fiction in all its forms. He grew up in Virginia and studied Religious Studies at the University of Virginia where he graduated in 1990. His degree allowed him as an author to create rich worlds with nuanced belief systems.
Professionally known as P.G. Holyfield, he...

My Inequality Aha! Moment
Self-awareness of the privilege I was born to has slowly widened. Ever more so in the past few years as brave humans I’m lucky to call friends share the harassment and discrimination they’ve experienced or continue to experience on a daily basis.
Perhaps you’re like me. I haven’t done much more than retweet, +1, like, or share posts that discuss the issues of male privilege or other inequality. Partly because I felt that, being a man (or white, or educated), I didn’t have the right to say any...

“Canary in a Coal Mine” – New eBook available
“Canary in a Coal Mine”
A few years ago I wrote a short story (short for me, in any case, around 8K words) forMatthew Wayne Selznick’s The Sovereign Era: Year Oneanthology. It was called“Every Breath You Take.”It’s the story of high school senior Christian Murphy, who has it bad for a foreign exchange student named Stacey… ‘but in a world where thousands of people are learning they possess unique, incredible powers, what exactly stands in the way of Christian getting what he wants?’
Last Fall,...

My New Favorite Podcasting Tool
Updated 03-01-2013: to correct some details noticed by Georg from the Auphonic team I recently came across what may prove to be the single most useful podcasting tool I’ve seen in years. It is a free online service called Auphonic which automates the tasks of normalizing audio as well as noise reduction, encoding, distribution, and a whole lot more. Many podcasters regularly use The Levelator by Conversation Networks to do some of this. Levelator is great and can save you hours of manual p...

Lunchtime Lullaby
As happens just about every time we leave a Con, I’m inspired to try something new. This time I’ve decided to embark on a new music project. A lot of people do “365” projects be it taking photos, writing blog posts, or even short stories. I’m not ready to commit to a song a day, but I’m going to write a song (or at least part of a song) during a lunch hour at least once a week and post it.
I won’t write a blog post about each one, but at least upload them to a set on SoundCloud. Anybody can l...
