It did feel like a milestone! And that's mainly because I wanted to have my book published by the time I turned 50, and that happened! I worked on it for 10 years! Did you know John Irving worked on Avenue of Mysteries for 25 years (I read it in the New Yorker) and Seldon Edwards worked on The Little Book: A Novel for 40?! I read a wonderful sentence in State of Wonder by Ann Patchett that brought to mind how hard I worked on my book: "She excelled not through hard bursts of inspiration but by the hard labor of a field horse pulling a plow..." I loved that sentence!

Say Good-bye to a Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather and Dentist

For all of those who read my book inspired by my father's remarkable life, I am sorry to share he passed away last fall after complications from a fall and fractured pelvis. I went to Florida and was by his side in Hospice. I still miss him every day, and it took me some time to share this obituary I wrote for my former hometown's newspaper.
