I was born in Chicago, Illinois. My mom was a widow at 32 and went to work as a secretary to support my 11 year old brother and myself at age 4. I loved going to the Loop (downtown Chicago) attending plays and going to museums. In college I majored in English and met my husband-to-be, Roger. We spent our honeymoon driving over the mountains in February in a used '49 Ford to Seattle, Washington. I've had several careers--travel agent, pre school French teacher, freelance writer. I've written everything from children's stories, travel articles, a family history, and my current book, The King's Man, which was based on the life of Sir William Coffin. That meant I spent a lot of time by my…moreI grew up a city girl in Chicago. My father died when I was four so my mother had to go to work as a secretary. That meant I spent a lot of time by myself. To keep me out of trouble when I was eight, I was allowed to go to the movies three times a week. (This was before TV.) Sometimes, I didn't have a dime for a ticket, so the manager would let me pick up candy wrappers and other scraps outside of the theater for admission. Watching those amazing stories on the big screen sparked my imagination--Cary Grant chasing a tiger in "Bringing up Baby," Judy Garland singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," Peter Fonda driving a rattle-trap truck to California to scrape out a living during the Depression. I didn't do any writing then but acted out the characters I'd seen. Those movies and the emotions they stirred stayed with me and helped me create my own stories when I grew older.(less)
