“What the administration was now bargaining and trading with was land grants, especially to the railroad companies, something Lincoln understood well. He and his administration were using lands taken from the Indians to advance the fortunes of a few wealthy groups in order to finance the North’s war costs.”

“I’ve seen a lot of battlefields during my time in the cavalry, Rob, but I’ve never seen anything like that. There were dead Indians everywhere, and I do mean everywhere: men, women, children. I read in the Deseret News edition a week later that between 250 and 300 Indians were killed. Well, I can tell you the number of dead Shoshone was a lot higher than that. Some of the bodies were in big piles together; others scattered around in smaller bunches and a lot them alone or in twos or threes. Most of ‘em shot at close range–the powder burns on their frozen skin were plain to see. That whole action was a disgrace to the U.S. Army and all those in government that let it happen.”

“We’re not part of the Confederacy anymore, either. There’s as many crooks trying to run the south as there are in the north. You said you’re headed west–to the territories. Good. You’re better off where there’s no government tellin’ ya what to think and do. ”

I apologize for not responding sooner–I have just now read your comment. I don't visit the GoodReads page often and am unfamiliar about how to navigate it.
Good luck to you in your writing career. It seems you started before age 40. I did not write books until well into my 60s. You should have plenty of time ahead to build your catalogue.
Thank you for being my friend here on goodreads. Here is my blog: jcm3blog.comHere is where I edit a short story contest: oval
I am working on a fantasy novel and a short story contest. I love history and the study of ancient civilizations. Have you ever considered doing a book with the three main old South American cultures? From what I understand they knew somethings about electricity and possibly refridgeration. What were they Aztecs, Mayans, and ?
Anyway, thank you for being my friend. I have a lot of work planned for this year, just turned 40 a few weeks ago. :)
