I finished one stanza, but was having an impossible time writing the first line of the next until I realized: the last line of the first stanza, which was supposed to be an Alexandrine (six iambic feet) was actually just plain old iambic pentameter (five iambic feet). After I rewrote that last line at its required length, I had much less trouble getting on with the rest of the poem.

Since then, my first resort when I'm stuck is to look at the part of whatever I'm working on I just finished. Often I'll find I painted myself into a corner, or started moving in a direction that simply isn't fruitful, or is out of line with my broader vision. And there are larger rhythms, too, that I like to take a look at. On any particular day, I might have trouble because I've been forced out of my routines or simply because my neighbor's mowing his lawn.

Finally, I also find that it's enormously helpful to let go of any worries about slowing down and give myself permission to start over as many times as I have to to get myself into some sort of groove. Bottom line: when you're stuck, be gentle with yourself, step back, and try to remember what worked before to get you unstuck.(less)

What I’m Reading: Mr. Puffball, Escape from Castaway Island, by Constance Lombardo

It takes nothing away from the first two books in the Mr. Puffball series to say that the third installment, Mr. Puffball: Escape from Castaway Island may be my favorite—possibly because in this third book, Constance Lombardo is working with what amounts to a well-seasoned ensemble cats cast, a crew of Hollywood veterans and up-and-comers who readers of the series have come to love.
