They're fascinating, but I read and prefer fictive worlds that are set in the real world, but in different eras. In terms of the fiction I've read about, the era I'd most like to visit would be 1782 to 1805 in America. And though I've never read a book of fiction set in very ancient Egypt, that's the era I'd most like to visit.(less)

From Cradle to Grave

Rhys Bowen does a marvelous job of keeping all the balls in the air in this latest installment of the Royal Spyness series. The ongoing characters continue developing their narrative arcs, while organically introducing information that sparks Georgie’s growing suspicion that what initially seem a series of unrelated accidents are, in fact, several perfect and […]

"Infuriatingly convoluted case, but the central relationship keeps me reading this series against my better judgment."
The Hallmarked Man by Robert Galbraith
"I think this series is at a loss. The mystery was buried by the repetitive scenes with the same old drama, the two MCs refusing to divulge their feelings but remaining jealous and petty. This could’ve been 500 pages if we just cut down the personal d" Read more of this review »

“Each day a whole world passes away, largely unappreciated, numbly relegated to obligation, commerce and routine. One day seems as unremarkable as the next. It's only through the inexorable accretion of days, weeks, months and years, that we come to appreciate with heartbreaking clarity how incredibly unique and precious each lost day has been.”
S.W. Clemens

“And thus was born The Seal Cove Theoretical Society, devoted to chit-chat, observation, current events, gossip, philosophical debate, and the occasional profound speculation, and bound together by friendship and forgiveness, which we all need, even if we deny it.”
S.W. Clemens, The Seal Cove Theoretical Society

“No one lives a full life without having an impact. Everyone has the power to make those around them happy or miserable, satisfied or frustrated. What more do you want?”
S.W. Clemens, The Seal Cove Theoretical Society

“Reaching the point of calling Emma a friend had taken a lot of catharsis, but the designation rested comfortably now both on her tongue and in her heart.”
Boo Walker, The Singing Trees

“In a room filled with babies, you will know yours from his cry. You'll tilt your head to listen, and from the pitch and tone or jagged howl, you'll instinctively know if he has a wet diaper, a lost pacifier, or if he needs good now. Before long, you'll know his favorite colors, what he wants for lunch, what he'll refuse to eat for dinner, that spiders fascinate him, but bull frogs prompt nightmares, and how long it takes him to start complaining on a long car ride. You may even bet on it. And the first time you see him copy your husband, with a hand gesture, or a tilt of his head, your heart will jump into your throat, and for a few seconds, you'll fall in love with the man you married all over again.”
Holly Kennedy, The Penny Tree
