Supernatural Fairy Tale

How would YOU feel if a perfectly beautiful, hot guy started following you around? Angry? Positive you’ve finally found Prince Charming? Or would you be scared, especially since there’s definitely something otherworldly about him? But this is New York City, 2015! Just when you’ve made up your mind he’s sick not supernatural, he starts talking to you in your dreams, assuring you that he’ll never harm you. And to prove it, every time something bad happens, he magically protects you.

Nineteen-year-old, NYU college student, Mallory O’Neill is definitely confused when she finds herself in this very predicament. Balancing challenging classes and a seemingly endless supply of homework/studying with a demanding part-time job isn’t easy. Yet all she can think about is the mysterious stranger in her life. Whether she’s at a club or a family party, she’s haunted by the thought that she’s either completely insane or insanely attracted to someone who may or may not be human. Is she living a supernatural fairy tale?

What do you think? Here’s an excerpt from Chapter 3 of “Forever Midnight:”

“…… The wind continued to rage, and visibility was poor. Shaded from all sides, Mallory could not clearly see the small pond ahead. Suddenly a gust of wind scattered tiny particles of ice like confetti. A chill rippled through her body. HE was coming toward her in the silvery night. He was almost GLIDING, unaffected by the weather… Fear, dark and menacing, flooded her heart…”

Cursed by darkness. Followed by evil. Sometimes perfection is not what it seems.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live for centuries? Is true love immortal? Would perfect beauty or uncharted powers make everlasting life without those you love worthwhile? What if evil stalked your every move? And what about the never-ceasing, all-consuming desire for blood?

“Forever Midnight” is a story that unfolds gradually. Mallory O’Neill seems like a pretty normal college student, but one dark night in December, she’s stalked by something powerfully evil. In terror she utters a prayer, only to have a mysteriously beautiful young man comes to her rescue. Is he an angel or a demon? Or something else? Who or what is this young man? And why has he chosen Mallory?

The answers to the questions I’ve posed are answered throughout the novel. And though the story is very much a love story, it is definitely the unnamed (until Chapter Three) young man’s story. It is also the story of the age-old struggle between good and evil with the main characters caught in the midst of the upheaval.

In my next posts, I’ll talk a little more about the story, its background, and what’s next. But for now, here’s a little of what Mallory sees when she meets the mysterious supernatural stranger for the first time:

“…….Something dark and sinister was lurking beside her. Its stench was foul, like decaying flesh.
'H-e-l-p, help me, please,’ she stammered.
As if in answer to her prayer, the air sparked with electricity which quickly changed to ghostly silver light. Mallory froze in place, squinting, trying to make sense of what she was seeing. As she watched, the unusual glow quickly dimmed until only a glittering mist remained. Clearly visible within the haze was a man.
Her eyes widened. He was moving…coming… closer…….
....The air seemed to rush from her lungs. She couldn’t scream. In silence, she stared, unable to move. It had only been a moment and yet with unhurried, gentle grace he stood before her. Shielding her with his body. Protecting her. Chills rippled down her spine when she glanced at him…… Like a shadow he was clothed in black. His hair was long and tousled, framing features which were somehow perfect. He was beautiful…….”

FOREVER MIDNIGHT

I recently read an article which indicated that there were many "real" vampires living in New Orleans. While they don't fit the stereotypical vampires of popular books and movies, they do indeed follow some practices embraced by their literary counterparts such as feeding on blood and living a nocturnal existence.

In my book, "Forever Midnight," there are a number of vampires with colorful background stories living among humans in NYC.

But many of Mallory's friends deny their existence. Here is what one young man argues:
"...... This is New York City, not Transylvania. There are no pale dudes with fangs and long capes skulking through fog....Next Mallory will be talking about castles and coffins. He chuckled to himself....."
"Forever Midnight" (c) 2015 Carol Suraci

But he was wrong; in "Forever Midnight," vampires DID walk among humans.

If you live in NYC, the next time you are out late, best watch that person lingering in the darkness! He/she may LOOK human, but.......

FOREVER MIDNIGHT

Of all the things that go bump in the night, I believe some are indeed real. Just because we don't understand doesn't mean they don't exist! So, perhaps vampires, demons, and spirits are among us!
What do you think?
In "Forever Midnight," Mallory tries to rationalize meeting the mysterious supernatural stranger who came to her aid on a dark, cold winter night:
"....So did his eyes really flame crimson? Were his teeth actually long and jagged? Yeah, sure. Everyday occurrence, if you're watching SyFy, that is...."Not real," she mumbled, shaking her head.
But the dreams, his voice.... Mallory rolled her eyes. When did I become such a tool? she thought, shaking her head again.
And then, from behind, a cold hand grasped her shoulder...."

So, do vampires, demons, and spirits really exist? I ask again: What do you think?

FOREVER MIDNIGHT

Over the centuries, vampire legends have existed in almost every culture across the globe. Back in the early 18th century, fear of vampires became rampant in some parts of Europe. Literature about the undead became popular as early as 1819. Later in the same century, Bram Stoker’s infamous Count was immortalized in “Dracula.” More recently, immortals have become part of our daily culture.

Here’s what Mallory rationalizes in “Forever Midnight:”
“….. Vampires are supposed to be myths,” she speculated aloud. Just imaginary monsters created by the minds of clever writers who had studied the worldwide legends. Some had been paid zillions by Hollywood to translate the fiends onto film. The public loved to be frightened, spent good money for the privilege, too. Right now, vampires were a craze. Books, movies, TV shows and even immortal memorabilia were popular with every age group, both male and female alike. Some young people felt it was cool to be undead. Fang-shaped veneers and unusual, colored contacts were readily available. Clubs catering to those pretending to be creatures of the night served cherry-flavored cocktails of fake blood. But the pointless killing she had seen was real. Real, Mallory shuddered. And HE, beautiful though he was, was truly a vampire. A real vampire…….”

So, now I ask you: Do you believe in vampires?

FOREVER MIDNIGHT

Forever Midnight by Carol Suraci

"... In the darkened room, shadows shifted, dancing like mad specters. Mallory had dreamed of the mysterious stranger. Beautiful. Perfect. Not human. He had pledged never to harm her. Now someone was watching her. There was no doubt in her mind; it was HIM."
