I'm Valerie Rutherford, and I'm a YA Contemporary Fantasy writer and author of the Magic Inc. series. I've been creating songs and stories as far back as I can remember. I began writing in fifth grade after a poetry assignment and had a poem published that same year. I'm currently writing a large interconnected universe called The Timeline.

My books have a strong emphasis on characters and their relationships. My writing often has a focus on anxiety, bullying, and intense feelings. I write magic as a way of bringing a visual manifestation to emotions and inner strength.

The third book is in the process of being written, and you can follow it here on Goodreads. The title is Firefly's Locket. No release date yet. It's still in early stages. But Magic Inc. is planned to be a ten books series, so there is much more to come!(less)

Whe…moreWhen I feel blocked or stressed, I take a break and work on something else. Usually I have multiple stories that I'm working on to choose between. When one isn't feeling right, I can jump to another for a while. I can even work on a project that's in a different stage, like outlining something new. That's often all I need to feel excited about writing again.

But occasionally, I need a break from writing altogether. During that time, I just take in as many inspirational things as possible. Music, movies, other books. Fresh air. When treated with the right mindset, this kind of break can be extremely beneficial. But I'll admit, sometimes I start to worry. Why is it taking so long? What if it never comes back? That kind of negative thought pattern actually takes away the benefit of resting. And eventually, I always feel the pull to go back so strongly that I couldn't deny it if I wanted to.

So, I find that it's good to just trust yourself. When you need a break, you'll know it. And when it's time to return, you'll know it, too. There will probably be parts of a story that you flat out just have to work through. Not everything about writing can just be a snap. But if you're well rested and inspired, those hard parts will be a lot easier. At least in my experience.(less)

April 2026 Favorites

Spring has more than sprung, and the atmosphere feels just a little brighter. And I do say just a little, because I think all the random weather and storms have been giving me headaches. Still, there were lots of good things to enjoy this month. Gris: Beautiful game. I finished it this month, and it deserved a second mention. ❤️ Wicked: Late to the party once again, but I watched the Wicked movies Read more of this blog post »

“It’s not exactly love at first sight. It is more like soul recognition.”
Lynette Simeone

Kiersten White
“I didn't fall in love with you. I walked into love with you, with my eyes wide open, choosing to take every step along the way. I do believe in fate and destiny, but I also believe we are only fated to do the things that we'd choose anyway. And I'd choose you; in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of reality, I'd find you and I'd choose you”
Kiersten White, The Chaos of Stars

Deb Caletti
“Sometimes love is a surprise, an instant of recognition, a sudden gift at a sudden moment that makes everything different from then on. Some people will say that's not love, that you can't really love someone you don't know. But, I'm not so sure. Love doesn't seem to follow a plan; it's not a series of steps. It can hit with the force of nature--an earthquake, a tidal wave, a storm of wild relentless energy that is beyond your simple attempts at control.”
Deb Caletti

Cassandra Clare
“There is no pretending," Jace said with absolute clarity. "I love you, and I will love you until I die, and if there is life after that, I'll love you then.”
Cassandra Clare, City of Glass

Anton Chekhov
“I confessed my love for her, and with a burning pain in my heart I realized how unnecessary, petty, and deceptive everything which had got in the way of our love had been. I realized that when you love someone, your reasoning about that love should be based on what is supreme, on what is more important than happiness or unhappiness, sin or virtue, in the way that they are usually understood, otherwise it is not worth reasoning at all.”
Anton Chekhov, About Love and Other Stories
