I took my dogs and my gathering bag for a winter walk in the Bristlecone pine forest behind our house. Elk have been here, browsing among the aspen trees and taking an occasional taste of the soft, nutritious bark. We shared their path for a ways.

The sun dropped low as we meandered along, looking for little nature gifts to put in my bag. I thought I should probably head back home. I paused at that, and then deliberately went slower. Because this world is moving too fast.

When did we decide that to slow down is to lose? What was there to rush back to? The book I’m working on will still be there, and time spent outdoors brings a fresh perspective to my writing. The dishes in the sink weren’t going anywhere, either. The dogs were having fun and I was happy. The Bristlecones around me weren’t in a hurry. If there’s an exact opposite to hurry, it’s these most ancient of trees.

You can’t capture time in a bottle, but it’s here in roots and rings. Most of the trees here are young. Research shows Bristlecones that average 12 to 30 feet in height and 5 to 12 inches in diameter are between 80 and 500 hundred years old. The ones over 500 begin to show crown dieback and dead limbs. For the next 1,500 years most of the remaining limbs will die, but the tree will continue on. These elder trees exhibit twisted branches and gnarled trunks of bare, wind-carved wood, surviving on a single living branch for another century or more. The Bristlecone grows slowly, often only 1/100th of an inch a year.

That’s not rushing through life. That’s slow growth with intention and endurance. We can learn from that. We can learn to savor our lives instead of racing through them.

They can teach us we don’t have to compete today, only create. To grow at our own pace. When your growth feels slower than others, just breathe. You’re not losing. You’re simply growing at a rate that allows your soul to thrive.

And that’s its own brand of success.

And by slowing my pace, I found more woodland treasures for my gathering bag. A branch had fallen naturally in the last storm, and I snipped a few bits from it. When I finally made my way back home, I arranged them in a wooden bowl to put on the headboard. It smells wonderful, of pine sap and crisp winter air. A reminder as I drifted to sleep of time well spent among the ancient ones.

When life takes a turn, go with it or hit the guardrail — if there is one. Sometimes it goes so fast you must drift the corners or crash. Bump that guardrail and keep going. Skid to the edge of the cliff but hold on and keep climbing.

But I can’t drive like him, and even if I could I don’t want to. Now my life is slower, more contemplative. The last five years of speed and sharp corners and sometimes no guardrail forced me to slow down. My husband retired and we moved from our home of thirty years. We didn’t move far physically, about sixty miles. Mentally, emotionally, and spiritually it feels more like six hundred.

There were also six hard losses in those five years. Four family members and two dogs (also family members to me). Moving house and home in the middle of repeated grief was a lot. When I would begin to feel like myself again, there was another one. And another. And they just kept coming.

The most recent two, my dear aunt and my precious Great Dane, Polly, came within a week of each at the end of last October and the beginning of November. That slammed me into the guardrail and I just sat there for a long time.

Death changes perspectives, and we can guide that direction, but I can’t do it with speed. I can’t outrun those feelings, they will eventually shove me off the road with a pit maneuver.

I had to stop, let them catch up, face them, make my peace with them, and then allow myself to climb above them. Not without those I lost, but with them in a new way. They’re still with me, I feel them in my heart. Sometimes they send me little signs — a simple Hi, I’m still here. Or I’ve got your back, it’s all going to be fine. Other times it’s a gift such as a feather, a visit with a butterfly, a familiar smile dressed in a sunrise.

But if I have the accelerator mashed to the floor, I miss those messages. Only when I slow down can I find them.

My writing here and in my books slowed down as well, because it’s far too easy for me to lose myself in those fictional worlds (which is the whole point of fiction in all its glorious forms). But when I use it to avoid things I need to deal with, I’m not helping myself.

I’m back to the writing again. Summer Hope, Book Three of the Hart’s Ghosts series, is well underway. I’ve returned to my blog here. Maybe I’ll get a newsletter out this month, too, but don’t hold your breath. I’m healing and growing and that’s where my focus is. That’s where it should be for me. The slow, steady climb, as long as it takes.

If you’re dealing with a loss, give yourself the gift of time. Watch the sun set behind the mountains, or waves on the beach, or a flower bloom. Slow down to look and listen for the message. It’s there.

And if you truly do find your peace in speed, then by all means go for it like Mr. Block. We all have our own way to reach the summit, fast or slow the only requirement is to keep going up.

I made my way up the peak on the cog train, far slower than Mr. Block’s Mustang. Faster than if I’d hiked; more focused on the mountain itself than if I had driven. None is the better way, they are only different, like our journeys through the peaks and valleys of life.

From the summit I was able to look down on our new home (somewhere near the black star below). It was a good change of perspective. To see how far I’ve come from the place where I started, and yet I remain part of it, as the surrounding landscape is connected to the peak. I’ve climbed a long way in the last five years, and I’m still climbing. I hope you are, too.

We lost our dear Polly a couple weeks ago. She would have been thirteen years old later this month, a good long run for a Great Dane. She crossed the fabled Rainbow Bridge peacefully at home, in the grass under the sun, surrounded by those who loved her the most.

While I can say I’m relieved she’s no longer struggling, there is a giant dog-shaped hole in my soul. Polly was my bestie beastie since she was five weeks old.

Every day she taught me about living in the moment, pure positive energy, connecting from the heart, speaking without words, unconditional forgiveness, and seeing the best in everyone. No small feat, but my giant dog handled it all with ease. Far better than I do some days.

She was my muse and my hiking buddy. Inspiration for my first published novel, lover of picnics and roadtrips, always ready to play or to lend a furry shoulder to lean on.

There were constant laughs along the way. If you know a Great Dane, you get it. Living with a real life cartoon is never dull. Marmaduke and Scooby Doo got it right. She was gangly and goofy, yet sometimes so graceful it was breathtaking. Other times so clumsy all we could do was laugh about it. And when the pony-sized dog is tail-wagging excited and making all the men in the vicinity wish for athletic cups… yeah just laugh harder.

And then there was the dog food budget. I had to make a separate line item for that! But it was worth every penny. What can I say about the slobber? It defied imagination. Every shake of her head sent it flying to sploot on the walls, ceiling, furniture, TV screen, and us. Her lips could hold a quart of slimy, cold water to be generously shared with whoever was closest.

Polly was the most gentle soul — human or otherwise — that I have ever met. She was pure and kind and all the things we should aspire to be. She was love itself wrapped up in a tawny coat.

Today my heart hurts, but is also filled with appreciation for the wonderful, life changing gift she was. Polly is still with me, I feel her presence like a warm breath of air on a chilly night, but oh how I miss a fifteen pound head lying in my lap for ear rubs and the sound of massive paws careening through the house in the exalted bliss of simply being alive.

So until we see our big Polly girl again, it’s farewell… but never goodbye.

Nature has shaped my heart and soul my entire life. I’ve always lived in it and with it, and to live without it is unthinkable. So naturally it’s a keystone of my fiction. Wild places are a main theme in all of my stories. Some characters like Tayla Lyon (Stop Down) find refuge and healing in the wilderness. For Jimmy Swain (Road Damage) the mountains are something to be survived. And for others like Troy Hart (Summer Star) and Toby Maddox (For The Dead) the wilds are a maze of beauty, secrets, and ghosts. But for all of them the wilderness is life changing, as it has been for me.

As both a writer and an orophile — someone with a deep appreciation for mountains — nature quotes usually catch my eye and many of them capture my imagination. I’d like to share a few of my favorites along with some of my photography that they have inspired. I hope they inspire you, too.

A box of books seems like a rather insignificant thing, something you see in attics, basements, and thrift stores every day. I see them and think they have served their purpose, whatever it was. To educate, to soothe, to entertain, to take readers away for a while.

And that’s the point, isn’t it? Fiction takes our hands and leads us into the unknown. To a beach, the mountains, as far away as another galaxy, as close as inside our own heads.

So we read them, keep our favorites, and hopefully pass the others on to someone else so they can experience them, too.

Today a box of books arrived that made me feel a little bit special. My new release, Stop Down. From here they’ll find their way into the hands of those they’re drawn to. As a writer my greatest hope is those people will enjoy going on an adventure with me.
