I grew up in Southeast Asia. My first experience with America was when I was six years old. Sometimes I amuse my friends by telling them stories of my first impressions of this country (clean bathrooms, Toy Story, Taco Bell, getting lost in department stores).

My family moved to California when I was eleven and completely changed the course of my life. On the outside I'm a well-adjusted American adult, but in all honesty some days I still wake up to the sound of the grass being cut by machetes.

I have traveled a fair amount and lived in four separate countries. I see the world very differently from most people that I know. And because I am an analytical introvert I try to understand everything in my life. I pour this into my writing.

E.B. Dawson Probably Margaret Hale and John Thornton (North and South). But Esther Summerson and Alan Woodcourt (Bleak House) are a very close second!

Thanks for the question! I'm sorry for my late reply, I didn't see the notification for this.

While I love Isabelle and Sebastian's story, some of the beauty of it (for me) lies in its simplicity. I started drafting thinking it would be more of a 7k story, and while it ended up being almost twice that length, it was very clear to me by the end that it was over. I think the beauty of shorter fiction is that there is more room for the reader to make the story their own and fill in the gaps and the before and after with their own imagination.

All that being said, I am not against ever writing more in this world. But I have no specific plans as of yet. (less)

The Theology of Prince Caspian

When I was a kid I definitely underrated Prince Caspian. The narrative and pacing feel all over the place. The main hero spotlight is divided between the Pevensies and Caspian. I have always felt impatient with the Caspian flashback. Compared to all the other books, the Pevensies don’t seem to do much (except Peter’s fighting Miraz). But don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed it. And there was that o

Persuasion by Jane Austen
"This was (with the exception of Emma) the only Jane Austen book that I didn't already know the ending before I started reading it. I absolutely loved the story of Anne Eliot, it's similar in many aspects to Mansfield Park, but also completely unique " Read more of this review »

J.E. is 50% done with A Tale of Two Cities / Great Expectations: Completed Tale of Two Cities. Gorgeous. Not a great "airplane" book, though. I may need to reread this a few times to grasp everything in it.

2024 Reread:

Still a masterpiece! This time around I was struck by how much of the story was painfully relevant for today:

-A corrupt and overly bureaucratic legal system that ruins lives and does anything but deliver justice.
-A circle of activists who

Honestly, I don't know how these books manage to work so well. Goofy humor, cartoonish characterization at times, tropey, but also surprisingly sincere, when it decides to be grim it hits HARD, but also heart-warming, and thoroughly entertaining. Hal ...more

“You will never overcome yourself if you always excuse yourself.”
E.B. Dawson, Out of Darkness

“I used to think I was the broken one and that the world owed me something because it was whole. But everybody’s broken, Druce. And they make everything so complicated.”
E.B. Dawson, Under the Skin

“I saw disillusionment. I saw pain, bitterness, anger--all things I understood very well. But then I saw what was underneath all that. Those were just layers; they weren't the heart of who you are.”
E.B. Dawson, Out of Darkness

“You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.”
C.S. Lewis

“Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.”
C.S. Lewis

“But no one except Lucy knew that as it circled the mast it had whispered to her, "Courage, dear heart," and the voice, she felt sure, was Aslan's, and with the voice a delicious smell breathed in her face.”
C.S. Lewis, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

“Suppose... suppose we have only dreamed and made up these things like sun, sky, stars, and moon, and Aslan himself. In that case, it seems to me that the made-up things are a good deal better than the real ones. And if this black pits of a kingdom is the best you can make, then it's a poor world. And we four can make a dream world to lick your real one hollow.”
C.S. Lewis, The Silver Chair

“When once a man is launched on such an adventure as this, he must bid farewell to hopes and fears, otherwise death or deliverance will both come too late to save his honor and his reason. Ho, my beauties!”
