As a child, I would play with my dolls with my cousin and we'd create entire background stories for every doll and every character. We'd write down random stats for them and occasionally reboot the entire story. We used to call it "Dolls Department" or DD for short. When we got older, we decided we wanted to write down and publish these stories because we remember a lot about them. We've yet to do that, but we've both definitely written our fair share of stories about them in the DD universe.

Up until high school, however, I wasn't much of an avid reader. Though I'd read occasionally, it wasn't something I explicitly enjoyed until grade 10 of high school. I still wrote throughout middle school, but it's true when they say that to become a writer, you must first be a reader. The more I read, the more I enjoyed writing, the more my writing improved. Portable Magic is a collection of short stories, and though they aren't arranged in order of when I wrote them, but in genre, had they been, you would be able to spot the differences in the writing style based on how much I had read before writing each particular story.

On the day to day, if books aren't inspiring me to write, I'm often inspired by songs, prompts, or even television shows. Sometimes one idea will just nag at you until you do something with it. But overall, music is definitely a motivator for me when it comes to writing. Certain music, I find, makes me write faster, and allows the ideas to flow better, and it's not necessarily the lyrics of the songs themselves, but the mood the music puts me in.(less)

I was given a free digital arc with the request that I leave an honest review and I have to honestly say that I really enjoyed this novel. I love Ruthia's character and spirit and she's just a likeable main character all around. She finds herself in ...more
