NaNoWriMo 2017

It’s that time of year again! We’re already a week into NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and I wanted to share my thoughts as I tackle 50,000 words for the second year running.

Would I recommend NaNoWriMo?

Yes! I mean, after last year I swore I’d never do it again, but you know what? I learnt so much. That’s why I’d recommend it and why I think every writer should try it at least once.

What’s good about it?

So many things. The community, obviously. Just knowing that others are struggl...

Resistance Free Chapters + Pre-Order

Resistance is now available for pre-order on Amazon as an ebook and in paperback. It’s already started getting great reviews on Goodreads from advance readers:

[image error] “The plot took me by surprise so many times and I would definitely recommend.” Christine Spoors “I already gushed about the main character, Cass in my review of Rebellion but she was back at it again in Resistance, and I just felt so proud of her. She’s kick-ass, she’s strong in a way that may not seem conventional, but she just has...

Book Formatting

My absolute worst nightmare is formatting my books and this time around hasn’t been any different. In fact, Ingram Spark kept coming up with error messages, no matter what I did. Claire from Eight Little Pages saved the day, like a modern day super woman.

They also do covers. BEAUTIFUL covers.

Personally I think their formatting and cover packages are an amazing idea. £215 for an ebook cover, interior formatting and two 3D rendered mock-ups. When you think about it, a custom cover is arou...

As a reminder I’ve included the map and an excerpt.

Have a wonderful week.

Josie x One Once upon a time, there was an evil queen. It was said that she was so beautiful, no mortal could look upon her face without becoming bewitched, and so she hid it with a veil. She ruled her land with an iron fist, but one day a hero and his two friends journeyed to defeat her and take back their country fro...

Queen First Chapter

Unfortunately, Queen won’t be released today as it’s currently stuck in pre-order limbo. This happened because I was doing too much and accidentally selected the wrong date, and, sadly, I couldn’t change it. To make up for this I am releasing part of the first chapter. But, if you pre-order Queen it WILL be released on MONDAY. That is an absolute promise.

I actually wrote a post on Wednesday about how I’ve taken on too much and something was bound to go wron...

Queen Map

Not satisfied with writing a book and designing the cover myself, I decided to create a map as well. Because I like extra work, apparently.

Here is the map I created for Queen. I hope you're excited about tomorrows release!

Using Your Voice

This post was originally sent to my subscribers.

Since the election I’ve been thinking about how we have to use our voices to speak up about things. And, how that voice is also what drives writing.

Writing often comes from a need to speak up about something, to find an avenue to express what’s on your mind. Like Reni Eddo-Lodge wrote in her blog post: Why I am No Longer Talking to White People About Race, which is now a book. She has something important to say and used her voice to do it. Us...

Writing a First Kiss

This post was originally sent to my subscribers.

I’ve been thinking about kissing, more specifically about writing about kissing. It can be a tricky business getting that first kiss between your OTP right and that got me reflecting on my first ever kiss.

I don’t actually count my first kiss as a real kiss but I’ll tell you about it anyway. We were sitting at the back of a coach, I can’t remember where we’d been but we were on our way back to school and there weren’t that many of us. I don’t...

The Final Meltdown

I’m not entirely sure I should be writing anything today. My brain is completely fried. I handed Resistance over to my copyeditor yesterday and I had a pretty stress-filled weekend getting it ready for her. I may have finally sorted the story out but, unfortunately, I’d neglected to pay attention to the fact the tenses are all over the place in some chapters. The reason for this is that I found it quite hard to write in third person present, it just doesn’t flow naturally. First person presen...
