Peace Pilot Premier – Boeing Field Museum of Flight

I am excited to share that our film, Peace Pilot, will have its debut screening at the Boeing Field Museum of Flight on Sunday, September 29th at 2 PM as part of their 4-day Centennial of Circumnavigation Celebration.  The museum theatre holds 250 people.  We are expecting a great turnout!

The Citizen of the World will be on display for the four-day event and seen by thousands of people.  I’ll be there signing the best-selling book, “Peace Pilot, To the Ends of the Earth and Beyond,” and answering questions about our world record-setting flight.

On Monday the 30th, I will fly the Citizen to its new home at DeLaurentis International Airport where the plane will live in our newly renovated beautiful museum.

The movie/documentary “Peace Pilot” will achieve global distribution via Apple TV, Amazon, Google, Gaia, and other streaming services very soon.  We will update you when those links are available.

My team and I are proud to have made this journey with your help and support.  We certainly could not have done it without you!  This will be an exciting year ahead as our efforts are again recognized and felt globally.

Joining My Aviation and Space Heroes

On October 21, 2023,  I was inducted into the San Diego Air and Space Museum’s Hall of Fame – an amazing honor on so many levels.

Provided below is the announcement by the San Diego Tribune. Below the article link, is a video which was the introduction prepared by the museum and shown at the awards ceremony prior to my acceptance speech (below the video in text).

The Polar Expedition was clearly a mission of many and I’m thankful to those of you who supported, encouraged, and believed in me!

Introduction video

Speech

It’s been three years since the Polar Circumnavigation and it still feels like a dream.

What a tremendous honor to be have been recently inducted into the Aviation Hall of Fame at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. The museum is a magical place rich with aviation history and inspiration.

I’ve had the privilege of walking by the museum several times a week for the last 17 years.   I would look up at the aircraft on display in front of the museum and think about aviation, and how  I could make my mark, create positive impact, and perhaps leave a legacy in this world. I wondered how I could use aviation as a vehicle for that message.

Little did I know that someday, like so many of my aviation and space heroes, I would have the opportunity to “boldly go” into the world to make that positive impact. Things really came together in 2015 with the successful Equatorial Circumnavigation in my single engine Malibu Mirage named the “Spirit of San Diego,” that departed and returned to our great city.  Four years later, hungry for more adventure, my team and I would embark on a much more difficult, ambitious, and dangerous Polar Circumnavigation using a plane appropriately named, “Citizen of the World.” We modified the Citizen in 50 ways to expand her flight capability from 6 hours to over 19 – 6 to over 19 hours. The Citizen was modified to operate in an environment well below the operating temperatures of Jet A fuel in a place where GPS doesn’t work, and where there is little chance for rescue. These were nearly impossible tasks but we prevailed using Predator B drone engines, ceramic coatings, some of the most advanced avionics on the planet, and a few secrets I’ll need to keep along with my Mother’s delicious Italian Spaghetti sauce recipe!

The Citizen and I carried a NASA-funded Waferscale Spacecraft made possible with an introduction to scientists at the University of Santa Barbara by our own Aviation Hall of Fame, and one of my best friends Professor, Brian Keating.  Also on board was a plastic particle experiment designed by Dr. Dimitri Deheyn for the Munk Foundation and Scripps Institution of Oceanography.  This experiment proved, for the first time in our history that there are more micro-plastics over the north and south poles than over the equator. And for the first time in history, the Citizen used ADS-B tracking and biofuels over the poles.

Equally important, was our mission of “One Planet, One People, One Plane, Oneness for Humanity.” This mission connected the two parts of the planet where peace has always existed – the  North and South Poles.  In our documentary, we show how we as humans are more similar than different. We all want safety for our families, good health, financial security, peace of mind, joy and happiness. And for me, I also discovered one of my biggest life lessons while I was quarantined in a monastery in Spain during the pandemic: That change begins in our hearts and minds and is reflected in the world around us.  To find Peace in the World we must first find it in ourselves.

What I have loved the most on this journey are the amazing people, the dreamers that supported me on these solo flights.

I could not have done this without their incredible support, knowledge, experience and wisdom.

It was never a mission of one but a mission of many.

These were the ones who held me up, supported me, encouraged me, calmed my fears, reminded me that I could prevail against impossible odds.

I’d like to acknowledge the people that stood by my side during 8 month and 23 day mission to the most remote parts of the planet –  Susan Gilbert, Professor Brian Keating, Mary Marcdante, Don Harrison, Damian Martorana, Dr Dimitri Deheyn, Mary Munk, Robert Morgan, Chris Honeycutt and  Erik Lindberg, who reminded me my only mission was staying alive. I am also very thankful for all of our 95 sponsors, Explorer Club leadership, and editors.

How could anyone fail with this much love and unflinching support during the times when I didn’t think I could make it? Nothing could stop us.  Together we were unbeatable!

Life offers us moments of incredible possibility and sometimes, the mission you are called upon to accomplish, is bigger than you.  Those are the moments to build your team, take courageous action and push the throttle forward and dream impossibly big.

When the Mission Becomes More Than You

Many thanks to Forbes Magazine and author, adventurer, and wild man, Jim Clash, for the wonderful article about the Polar Circumnavigation of the Citizen of the World. It’s great to see three years of hard work recognized by such a reputable magazine!

Explorers and adventurers seem to have more than one life. In pursuit of their goals, risk is a given. After all, that’s part of the thrill of completing a project.

A Lucky Flight in Sea Swan

Flying the Sea Swan back to California from Washington for a planned supercharger upgrade was one of those moments where the airplane was speaking loud and clear. I also needed some time with my new friends sharing our passion of aviation. We must help each other and have faith that our journeys are inspired by more than chance or even luck.

In solid instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), I got a red warning light and noticed the tachometer reading on the Electronics International MVP-50 was flashing at me and went from 2,550, which is a normal cruise setting, to more than 3,800 and back several times. This was clearly an indication issue as there was no change in the sound of the engine during the fluctuations. A few minutes later, all the engine information readings failed, which included engine temps, fuel and oil pressure, manifold pressure, and fuel quantity, to name a few. This was odd as solid-state equipment is typically “solid.” I knew something more had to be “up,” no pun intended.

Airplane respect! Tailwheel training in an SNJ-6 Texan

Next to the venerable SNJ-6 Texan with Warbird Adventures owner Thom Richard.

Airplanes require respect. Some more than others. The North American T-6/SNJ-6 Texan demands respect in large thundering 600-horsepower quantities and will not give you a pass even once. This beast will call you on any mistake you make in the most dramatic and public way possible by doing things like ground looping, stalling, and even “killing puppies” by skipping and chirping down the runway. Remember to park your ego on the tarmac when you meet the “Pilot Maker.”

When I decided to finally get my tailwheel endorsement after many years it seemed like a pretty good idea to kill two birds with one stone, get this in a Texan and start building warbird hours. My hope is to set myself up to fly something faster in the future before my insurance rates skyrocket in five years when I turn 60. To fly a P-51 Mustang, F4U Corsair or P-40 Warhawk, for example, one needs to first log about 200 hours in a Texan per my insurance agent, Chris Travers.

A quick internet search yielded the same information that an AT-6 owner gave me. Warbird Adventures was the place to go. They are in the beautiful South Carolina countryside. Owner, Thom Richard, has over 13,000 hours and 26 years in the SNJ-6. He is well known for his Reno air racing exploits in “Precious Metal” and other air racers, but cut his teeth as a low altitude airshow performer flying Mustangs, Corsairs, and Warhawks, to name a few.

Before arriving in hopes of making the training “easy” I studied the operations manual from the 1940s and learned what I could before I arrived. I should have memorized the pattern altitudes, airspeeds, throttle settings and rpms. That would have made things a lot easier and allowed me to focus on many other intricacies of the airplane.

Besides basic flight training and introductory flights, Warbird Adventures has a couple T-6 programs. One for five hours and another to learn it all for 10 hours. I’m a slow learner with a weak stomach so for me it was going to be the 10-hour program.

I flew my turbine commander cross-country to Greenwood, South Carolina (KGRD), and then drove about 30 minutes to the American Dream SkyRanch where Warbird Adventures now calls home after a recent move from Kissimmee, Florida. The appropriately named SkyRanch is a 100-acre property with a narrow turf runway that upslopes dramatically for the first couple hundred feet and then goes flat. Huge lighted white cones mark each side of the runway.  With these obstacles all around it’s enough to get your heart pumping especially after two hours of flying each day.

Preflighting this venerable big plane you realize it is built like a flying tank. The aircraft was built strong for a reason to pull lots of G’s and to take the abuse a beginning pilot can deal out. The airplane I would fly—N452WA—was built in 1958, is in great shape, had low hours, relatively speaking, and would probably fly for another 70 years.

Standing in front of this aircraft I couldn’t help but think about all the pilots that had come before me during World War II and the fears that they were experiencing. Almost all World War II pilots whether they were fighter pilots or bomber pilots had time in some version of the Texan.

When you walk up to the Texan it’s a big, intimidating plane with that huge nine-cylinder radial Pratt & Whitney R-1340 rebuilt by Covington Aircraft, and weighs in just over 4,000 pounds empty. It’s a big, slightly unstable plane that screams history and demands respect. Get ready to brawl a little to determine who is going to be boss. Being a Zen Pilot, I have a gentle touch in the cockpit since airplanes can sometimes break so easily. Little did I know I would be stomping on the rudders, slamming the stick to the sides, and grabbing this plane by the nape of the neck to show who was boss! Damn that was intense!

My first flight was mostly about getting acquainted with this beast. Some 45-degree turns, climbs, and dives were no big deal and very cordial. By the second flight we were doing inverted stalls, split S’s, Immelmanns, loops, rolls, barrel rolls, and a bunch more.

My stomach was not liking any of this and I quickly learned when your sight picture doesn’t agree with your inner ear, your body thinks you are being poisoned. As a result, I was dizzy and felt like I was going to barf my last week of lunches. I tried to keep a brave face, but Mac (short for Micheala) and Thom saw it and stopped things before it got too crazy.

When I finally did what my instructors told me—which was flex my calves, quads, and stomach like Arnold Schwarzenegger, exhale and make a sound know only to aerobatic pilots—that nausea was nowhere to be seen.

Thank God!

I thought I was past the worst of it but, in reality, I had done little true “flying” in my 2,300 hours and 52 countries visited. I realized I had become a world class button pusher. The problem was there wasn’t a button to push in that front cockpit. The com stack was in the back seat with the instructor and I have still yet to find the autopilot!

What was the most challenging for me was making corrections before things happened. I was used to responding to things that aircraft did and then making a correction. In this plane that is way too late, and you will quickly be out of control if you don’t anticipate what is going to happen and make the corrections just before they happen.

I experienced this at the SkyRanch when I landed with a left crosswind and instead of coming in with left stick, I came in with the stick in the center. The wing immediately went up and I felt very much out of control. Michaela saved the day by getting the wing down and correcting with some left rudder since I was too far to the right on this narrow runway.

I also found takeoffs to be a lot more challenging than in a tricycle gear plane. Lifting the tail, keeping the wings from flipping the plane, keeping the beast lined up on the centerline not to mention taking off and eventually landing on grass for my first time. It really felt like hitting a golf ball properly. Many things must come together for that magical and evasive greaser followed by the “Ahhh” moment.

Even though the Texan has that big 600 hp radial, I didn’t have a sense of tons of extra horsepower like I do in my twin turboprop. I think lots of that power is eaten up with the 5,000 pounds of operational weight. The aircraft does make lots of intimidating noises and vibrations that can be felt in the plane even as an observer.

I found myself making hundreds of inputs in a simple trip around the pattern in the Texan. At one point, I looked down at my hands and feet and realized how active I was. In fact, after about two hours of it I was totally exhausted. I just wanted to go sit and be quiet and do nothing for a while. I needed to let my soul catch up with my body.

When I had finished the class and was getting ready to fly out, I got to see the Texan come into the pattern and land. I had no idea how cool it looked and sounded. It was a bit mesmerizing, and I was quite happy to just watch her come in for a touchdown.

Certainly, flying is a lot more than just flying the plane. The experience is one of sight, sound, smell, connection, and in this case, plane history. The Texan is rich with all these sensations.  Before I left the SkyRanch, I felt the urge to stop in one last time and say goodbye to my friend, the Texan. It was a bit of a sad moment as I felt we had been through so much together. We had worked past my fears of ground loops, aerobatics, my weak stomach, 3-points, wheel-landings, and grass takeoffs and landings. Because of this association, I was a better pilot, and I was very happy about that. A buddy later pointed out that was a lot for one week of aviation. I couldn’t help but agree.

A Journal Manifestation That Lead to Flying

While at home in San Diego on a rainy day, I came across a journal in one of my fireproof safes. A few more pages in, I was surprised to read: “I want to learn how to fly a plane.” Another few pages later I was shocked to find it said, “Wouldn’t it be great to have my own plane and travel the world. Going from place to place. To do that for a year would be a truly incredible experience.”

I’d like to share a miraculous story with you. It started back in early 1991 during the Persian Gulf War. I was a young officer in the U.S. Navy, anxious to prove myself in the world.

A Successful Polar Circumnavigation in a Modified Twin Commander

It’s a great honor to have this full-length article in AOPA Turbine Pilot magazine. It’s been one of the DeLaurentis Foundation’s goals since we started working on the Polar Circumnavigation back in 2018. It’s even sweeter that it was written by my editor, David Tulis who I’ve been working with for almost 3 years now.

It seems persistence and a ton of hard work by the team have helped manifest this article. I hope you enjoy it. In 2022 we are also looking forward to the release of the book and docuseries by the title, “Peace Pilot, to the Ends of the Earth and Beyond.”

A five-month plan to circumnavigate both poles stretched into nine months before Robert DeLaurentis successfully guided his modified 1983 Twin Commander 690D to a landing at San Diego’s Gillespie Field on August 12, 2020, after flying through 22 countries and six continents.
