I have written a book for the Extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy, entitled Mercy Matters: Opening Yourself to the Life Changing Gift. The book discusses the complex dynamics of mercy surrounding issues such as addiction, adoption, bullying, death and dying, marriage, reconciliation, and suffering. Discussion questions accompany each chapter: The book is written for both individual and group study and is meant to be shared.

I teach Comparative Religions in the Department of Religious Studies, at the College of the Holy Cross, a Jesuit liberal arts institution in Worcester, Massachusetts. I also blog regularly for the Boston Globe website, Crux.

“Apologies often cannot undo pain; but they can acknowledge it. And part of the cruelty of bullying is that the bruises it leaves are on the inside—it’s a hidden form of violence, shrouded by shame.”
Mathew N. Schmalz, Mercy Matters: Opening Yourself to the Life-Changing Gift

“In our busy lives, intimacy often becomes a set piece—we sit down and make time for discussions, for togetherness, for sharing. But sometimes the most intimate parts of ourselves—our desires, our fears, our needs and sensitivities—are revealed most strongly in the course of our mundane routines.”
Mathew N. Schmalz, Mercy Matters: Opening Yourself to the Life-Changing Gift

“Choosing life is always messy.

But it is there in the messiness, in the conflicted and often confused ways we live our lives, that we can learn how much mercy matters to us all.”
Mathew N. Schmalz, Mercy Matters: Opening Yourself to the Life-Changing Gift
