“I suppose I was searching, like all the rest of these would-be wanderers, for some mythical time and place—that hippie haven, where long hair and natural looks were not a fashion trend but rather a statement of wild, unbridled freedom that simply read “...because I can!” It was in this spirit that we wore our hair long and barely shaved and favored clothes that were old and worn, with everything closely resembling mother earth.
The hippie movement really began in the 1890s with Thoreau, continuing through the early Mormons and right on up to the 60s. Hell, our country was founded by hippies: people looking for freedom, driven to create a utopia to encompass their non-conformist ideals, with the natural instincts to follow that undercurrent of humankind’s magnetic fields. The Dead, for a short while, brought that mythical space and utopia back to life.”
