I trained as a librarian at the same time I discovered my love of publishing. I worked for Viking Children's Books for 6 years before moving to Virginia for my now-husband to study for his PhD.

Leaving NYC meant returning to my library background. I have worked as a high school librarian, a community college librarian, and a 4-year college librarian. I am now the manager of a library in the Ohio University system.

It took the birth of our daughter and support from a Viking colleague who eventually became my agent for me to try my hand at writing.

I would give …moreI used to have a presentation I gave to SCBWI audiences when I was an editor. It was "Insta-jects: what they are and how to avoid them." I would give advice about removing things that typically turn an editor off at the early stage of opening a submission. Many of those things are no longer major concerns thanks to the age of electronic submissions.

The best advice that still holds true is to read as many books as you can, not just the "read-alikes" for your writing style, but any books. You learn about your own writing from reading.

And reading your work aloud is really telling--are you bored when you read a certain line? Chances are an editor will be, too. Do you stumble over a particular rhyme when you read it aloud? That's where you want to focus your attention as you revise. (less)
