S.L. Mills was bred but not born in Australia, a magnificent, sparkling, dreamy country that has inspired artists around the globe.

Earning a cadetship at Fairfax Media (Australia's leading news organisation) after university, S.L. Mills spent a lifetime writing and editing some of the best news and features articles in the world.

But it wasn't enough. Novels held an irresistible attraction for the author and, eventually, the fingers hit the keyboard in the service to literature, never to be stayed.

S.L.Mills' first novel GOM's Gold is a romping tween fantasy set in Australia (in flagrant defiance of the naysayers) - the first in a series of seven.

A historical fiction based on three generations of women in Australia's early colony will be next

Cathy and Heathcliff, for example, I find incredibly fascinating and elemental because they touch on some eternal, elemental emotion that I cannot name. I think Charlotte Bronte described Wuthering Heights as like breathing raw lightning. But I am not overly fond of tragedy or tragic couples. I do rather like the ease of Austen's couples, particularly Anne Elliott and Frederick Wentworth in Persuasion. I think if I had an ideal fictional couple, they would have both the power of Bronte's pair, and the success and gentle ease of Austen's - perhaps I should have a shot at writing such a grand couple - a pair that ride their energy like a wave, rather than being crushed by it, into a shimmering, heightened, rareness of being. I do also like couples where one or both have something to teach the other and they come together as part of that experience. - as in Toni Jordan's Graca and Seamus in Addition - it's rather sweet. And I rather like feisty couples like Maurice Walsh's - The Quiet Man, Castle Gillian, etc, because there is such a frisson of pleasure to be had in the reading of them :)(less)

Sometimes I am not sure what to write next and, in those instances, I either keep on writing anything, pushing forward with whatever comes out, or go for a walk. I always think about my novel when I am doing tasks that don't demand much mental attention - I daydream a lot. Sometimes you will see a smile play across my face or some weird facial expression as I work through things in my head. It's not necessarily good from a social perspective though, because sometimes you ignore those around you and go into your own world. My brother calls it Sarah's world.(less)

“I believe fantasy as a genre touches on many profound truths about human nature – the propensity for struggle and the drive for happiness – and that it is these truths that explain the genre’s success. But I think one of the things I like best about fantasy, is that it makes people happy.”
S.L. Mills, GOM's Gold

“We would learn as much as we could, be as honourable as we could, be as courageous as we could, and be as happy as we could.”
S.L. Mills, GOM's Gold

“Our bedraggled heads peeped from the water like bobbing apples just waiting to be eaten, as Magwart prowled the shore.”
S.L. Mills, GOM's Gold

“I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.”
Marilyn Monroe

“Without music, life would be a mistake.”
Friedrich Nietzsche, Twilight of the Idols

“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
Steve Jobs
