I find it inordinately difficult to review a novel. Oh, assigning an 'X-out-of-5' rating is straightforward enough, that's just a measure of how much I enjoyed it - but actually writing a detailed text praising/panning a story is almost anathema to me. They are, after all, intensely personal works; criticising an album, a movie, a TV show or a video-game usually means spreading the blame thinly over a number of people, which I can just about bring myself to do - but mentioning a complaint with a novel seems horribly akin to a personal criticism of the author. Of course, the same is true when saying nice things about a novel, but (being stereotypically British) I find this almost as awkward as being rude would be. However, there are occasion ...more

Aunts Aren't Gentlemen by P.G. Wodehouse
"As Wodehouse’s last finished novel, written in his 90s, Aunts Aren’t Gentlemen is a comparatively enervated affair, though it’s not without its laugh-out-loud moments. Bertie’s difficulties ultimately resolve themselves, not by any maneuvers of Jeeve" Read more of this review »
Aunts Aren't Gentlemen by P.G. Wodehouse
"It's probably my own fault for reading every single Jeeves and Wooster book that Wodehouse wrote. Now that I'm on the last one, I can't help comparing Wodehouse to a favorite uncle who tells great stories that are all suspiciously similar. He also kn" Read more of this review »
Aunts Aren't Gentlemen by P.G. Wodehouse
"Hmmm. I did not realize, upon grabbing this library book, that this is the last book Wodehouse ever wrote. It was published in 1974(!) when he was 92(!). Ok, for a 92 year old it's pretty great, better than I can write at 55 lol, but for Wodehouse hi" Read more of this review »

“Sugar dissolved in rose water
Won't cure my heart; but if you could
Dissolve your curses in your kisses,
That distillation surely would.”
Hāfez, Faces of Love: Hafez and the Poets of Shiraz

Hafez
“And still, after all this time,
The sun never says to the earth,
"You owe Me."

Look what happens with
A love like that,
It lights the Whole Sky.”
Hafiz

“Your love should never be offered to the mouth of a Stranger / Only to someone who has the valor and daring to cut pieces of their soul off with a knife / Then weave them into a blanket to protect you.”
Hafiz

“TRIPPING OVER JOY

What is the difference
Between your experience of Existence
And that of a saint?

The saint knows
That the spiritual path
Is a sublime chess game with God

And that the Beloved
Has just made such a Fantastic Move

That the saint is now continually
Tripping over Joy
And bursting out in Laughter
And saying, “I Surrender!”

Whereas, my dear,
I am afraid you still think
You have a thousand serious moves.”
Hafez, I Heard God Laughing: Poems of Hope and Joy

“You don’t have to act crazy anymore—
We all know you were good at that,

Now retire, my dear,
From all that hard work you do

Of bringing pain to your sweet eyes and heart.

Look in a clear mountain mirror
See the beautiful ancient warrior
And the divine elements
You always carry inside

That infused this universe with sacred life
So long ago”
