In such a case, I just muscle through it, that is, I plunk my bottom into a chair, place my fingers on the keyboard, face the blank screen at the appointed time, and write whatever comes, even if it's all nonsense that I delete later.

When the block seems real, that is, I'm stuck in a particular scene and can't figure out how to write my way out of it, I'll reread and rework earlier passages, hoping that by looping back I can gain enough momentum to sail past the stuck place when I arrive at it the second or third time around. Sometimes I'll take a break from trying to write, and I'll read random passages from some of my favorite authors (fiction writers and poets) to remind myself of the beauty of words on a page and to remember why I write--to express my vision of "life, the universe and everything" and to share my vision with others as the numerous writers I have read and valued have done by putting their words on the page.

Sometimes I simply indulge the silence, trusting that my creative self is working something out, even as the words aren't flowing onto the page. Really, my thinking is that the creative mind is never truly blocked. The words are always swarming around inside. It is just that what the creative self has to say is below the level of the conscious mind and just needs time, opportunity and/or incentive to surface. So I allow myself that quiet, seemingly unproductive time that sometimes looks like daydreaming, or doing nothing, or being in my own little world.

But one truth I know about writer's block--if I really want to call myself a writer, "writer's block" is a luxury that I can't afford to hang on to for very long. It needs to have a short shelf life.
