half-truths
Available on AmazonHi Everyone,
Welcome to Wanda Luthman’s Children’s & Christian Book Blog!
Today, I have a YA book to share with you all. I read it and could not put it down. I read it from start to finish. It tells a tale of a time not so long ago when the South didn’t tolerate African Americans. But, this young girl and her Dad looked at things differently. Through journalistic-inspired detective work, this young white girl named Kate and an African American servant girl named Lillian discovered a hidden truth about their past that tied their families together.
My review…
I felt this book was very well written. It is written in first person which sometimes can be hard to pull off, but this author, Carol Baldwin, did an excellent job. I felt what the young girl felt and saw what she saw. I was invested from the beginning to see what was going to happen and to figure out her family’s secret.
I didn’t grow up in North Carolina but I was born there and have family who live there. In fact, at the time of this reading, I was sitting inside my sister’s house looking out over the beautiful rolling hills and tall trees of a North Carolina small town situated in the foothills of the Appalachians. It was as though I was pulled back into time through this story since it took place in a small town in North Carolina. I could feel the fear of the African American family as the KKK drove through town. I could feel the quandry of this Kate as she tried to make sense of why the grown up white men felt such a hatred for the African American people.
It feels a lot like today…so much suspicion on each side. Neither side trust the other. Nobody really talks about it. They just perpetuate their one-sided view. This book brings the past to life and allows the reader to think critically about what happened and why and how to, hopefully, move forward with more sensitivity and acceptance. I highly recommend this book.
Here’s the description of the book from Amazon
It is 1950, and 15-year-old Kate Dinsmore wants to become a journalist. But, her tobacco-farming father can’t afford to send her to college. She devises a plan to move from rural North Carolina to her wealthy grandparents’ home in Charlotte in hopes of gaining their financial support. Now she has a new set of problems. How can she please her society-conscious grandmother and conform to her new classmates’ lifestyles? She meets Lillian, her grandmother’s teenage maid, and in spite of their racial differences, they form a tentative friendship. While exploring her grandmother’s attic, Kate unearths a secret that rocks her world and Lillian’s too. The shocking discovery reveals half-truths that threaten the girls’ friendship. What will Kate do when she must choose between Lillian and her new society friends? Through a mentorship with a newspaper editor, Kate realizes that journalism requires honesty. But, the risks of truth-telling make Kate question herself. If she reveals what she has learned, what price will she pay?

adorable
Available on AmazonHi Everyone,
Welcome to Wanda Luthman’s Christian & Children’s Book Blog!
I’m super excited to introduce you to a new-to-me author, Ron Kinscherf. He has a book called Adorable and I know you’re going to love it. He’s here to tell us about it along with his journey to publishing…
Ron Kinscherf is an anomaly. In a world where only twenty percent of us say they are doing what they do best every day, Ron has discovered two things he is able to do very well.
After a successful career in IT consulting, he began making up stories to tell his grandchildren.
Soon, he became a children’s book author, not because he always dreamed of being one, but simply
because he loves his grandchildren and creating stories that make them smile.
It happened like this: One Sunday night at the Kinscherf Family dinner he mused about what he might do next in life. His daughter in law suggested – quite out of the blue – that he at least take a look at being a children’s author. Ron did take a look and as they say, the rest is history.
He is about to publish his 11th book, Adorable, and they have all been very well received and loved by those who have read them and those who have heard the heartfelt tales he pens.
In Adorable, the protagonist, Prince Antrew, couldn’t be happier! It’s Spring and the weather is perfect for his morning flight around the patio. Life is good … until he arrives at the Palace and meets his new little sister, Princes Adorable. Why would his mother, the Queen, do this to
him?! The Prince flies away as fast as he can, mad at the whole world. On his flight he runs into Wise Owl, the smartest creature in the neighborhood who gives him a different perspective on the change happening with his family. The Prince then rushes home to talk to his mother, armed with this new perspective.
Ron has many other books available on Amazon

About Ron Kinscherf
Ron Kinscherf quit a 30-year career in IT Consulting with absolutely no idea for future
employment. At their regular Sunday Kinscherf Family dinner, his daughter-in-law had a
suggestion. Why not start writing children’s books? She had seen how Ron created stories
that engaged and amused his grandkids.
In the beginning, he didn’t take her suggestion seriously. But then, he got an idea while
watching his grandson stomp on the ant hills around his back patio. He wondered how the
ants might feel about having their homes destroyed. So began The Baker’s Patio series of
books, including The Bakers’ Patio, Flight School, The Sultan, The Monster, The Festival,
I’m With Me, Yummies, and his latest book, due out soon, Adorable.
Kinscherf’s style is for both the child and the reader… understanding that the more the adult
likes the book, the more likely it will get read again and again. His keen sense for dialogue
and humor is interwoven throughout his works.
Q & A with Author Ron Kinscherf
Q. At an age when most people are retiring, you have launched a new career
writing children’s books. Tell us a little about how that happened.
A. We have family dinners every Sunday night. One night we were talking about
what I was going to do next with my life. I said “I could drive a school bus.
They’re always looking for school bus drivers.” Then, out of the blue, my
daughter-in-law said “You could write children’s books. The way you play with the
kids is so creative. It seems to come naturally to you.”
And I sort of brushed that off and didn’t take it seriously at all. I thought it was just
a side comment. And it might’ve been the next Sunday that I was outside
barbecuing and my grandson started stomping on ant hills, and I’m just sitting there
watching him destroy all these poor ants’ houses. And I thought, ‘I wonder how
the ants feel about this?’ And that was the seed of an idea and I kind of created this
world where the ants have their ceilings destroyed or houses being destroyed. They
are looking up wondering what in the world is going on? And then I got the idea
that this happened every week when a grandson would come by. And then I got
another idea and another idea and then I started writing.
Q. What do you hope happens when parents and kids read your books?
A. I just want the parent to enjoy reading it and that maybe the book leads to a
conversation. And I want their child to have a good time. I want the kids to smile. I
want them to ask questions about the book. It’s pretty simple, really. If you create
something, no matter whether you are a songwriter or a painter or anything, you
just want people to enjoy it.
Q. So, your father who passed away when you were 5, worked for Golden
Books? What are the chances?
A. Yeah. That’s pretty crazy, isn’t it? My dad worked for one of the biggest
children’s book publishers and then decades later I became a children’s book
author. Things like this make me believe in Kismet, little winks that make me
think there’s a Plan and I am just a part of it.
My dad was very creative. One of my favorite possessions is something that I
remember him drawing with watercolors that we have on our wall, and my wife
got that framed for me, and it is just something we found one day going through
some stuff. I think I got my artistic bent from him. I’ve always been creative. When
I was in radio, I did parody commercials and sold them, and that was back in the
old days, we didn’t have computers and all that. So, you had to be creative. I also
did play by play for 25 years. And that’s a version of storytelling and creativity,
too. But nothing like this.
Your books all have a strong sense of community and strong female characters.
Talk about that for a minute.
It’s kind of interesting. I had written a number of manuscripts and wasn’t to the
point of publishing anything yet. One of my friends mentioned that she was so
happy that my little ant colony had such a strong female character … the Queen …
running things. It hit me. My father passed away when I was five. I had no idea I
was writing what I experienced.
I grew up around strong women. After my father’s death, my mom didn’t remarry.
She went on to get her psychiatric degree and she became the first psychiatric
nurse in this town, in this community I grew up in and still live in. She did that for
the rest of her life.
She was given an award one time for her service to the community. When she gave
her acceptance speech, she thanked the neighborhood because it was an old
Catholic neighborhood, a couple blocks from the parish and the church. We all
looked out for each other because a couple of the other families had loss … one
family had eight kids, another family had six.
e had a kid living with us that
wasn’t in our family for a while, and he bounced around from house to house. If
my mom needed to do something, I’d run across to another house and play in the
backyard of somebody else’s house and I never gave it a second thought.
So, I think there was this unwritten agreement among all these families in the
neighborhood that they would keep an eye on each other. And she said in her
speech that she wouldn’t be here without the neighborhood. It was a real
community and we all were better off for it.
Thank you, Ron, for being here today and telling us about your incredible journey. You are an inspiration to many. Your books have wonderful messages for children. I’m glad you shared them with your grandchildren as well as the rest of the world.
And thank you to my loyal blog followers. I have been away for awhile because my Mom moved into the house next door to me and it’s taken awhile to get her settled. I appreciate your patience and support.

flight
Sandy Whiting, Author of Flight (available on Amazon)Hi Everyone,
Welcome to Wanda Luthman’s Christian & Children’s Book Blog,
Today, I have a book to share with you on a topic that is very near and dear to my heart…death, grief, and hope.
Sandy Whiting has written a book on these very topics called Flight.
Available on AmazonHere’s what it’s about…
Fifteen-year-old Cassie’s world is turned upside-down with the death of her father. Unable to cope, Cassie’s mom finds solace in pills. Her brother, Jeremy, becomes lost in Virtual Reality and her sister, Courtney, spends all her time with friends, leaving Cassie seemingly unattended and unloved.
At the same time Cassie’s class begins an in-depth unit on butterflies, Cassie’s mom unexpectedly takes a trip, leaving her family in the hands of their widowed neighbor. Written in free verse, Cassie can either continue to see the worst in her unfortunate surroundings or embrace her new-found knowledge that butterflies aren’t the only creatures capable of change.
A little bit about the author, Sandy Whiting…
A lifelong lover of reading and writing, Sandy has been penning poems and stories for as long as she can remember. She is employed as a Speech-Language Pathologist, is a certified yoga instructor, and heads a creative writing program for pre-teens at her local library.
In addition to FLIGHT, Sandy previously published the first book in her author/illustrated early chapter book series, Meatball Man Head Detective: Case of the Missing Pepper Shaker, in June 2024. Meatball Man was endorsed by NYT Bestselling Author, Adam Wallace, and received the Literary Titan Gold Book Award. Sandy lives in Western, NY with her husband, two kids, and cat.
Sandy’s Publishing House, Monarch Educational Services, LLC, reached out to me to read and review her book. I loved her book and below is my review…
This book is written for a young teenager who may have experienced death and loss in their life. Their grief may have taken away their hope which so often it does. But, this book shows a female protagonist who is struggling with these same issues of death and loss and grief along with having to take on the role of Mom while her own mother grieves the loss of her husband, the protagonist’s Dad. This happens far more often than one would think. You can tell from the way the author weaves grief and the associated feelings into the story that she, herself, has also experienced grief. But, what I loved the best of all about the book is it doesn’t leave you there in the grief, the protagnoist finds hope bit by bit. It’s a beautiful story and so incredibly helpful for others experiencing grief. I highly recommend it!

the boy and the secret of the stars
Author, Victoria OltarshHi Everyone,
Welcome to Wanda Luthman’s Christian and Children’s Book Blog!
Today, I have a new author with a great middle grade chapter book to share with you. The author, Victoria Oltarsh, is here to tell you all about it…
When I was a little girl I was mesmerized by the stars at night. Driving home from the beach in the back of my family car, I can remember gazing up wondering what was beyond what I could see. Stars evoked my imagination.
In 1981 while rocking my second daughter, LaLita, to sleep, the story, The Boy and the Secret of the Stars, flashed before my eyes. As a single working mother, drama and playwriting teacher, it took 42 years to write down what came to me in a flash so long ago.
My unique, 9-year-old fantasy loving granddaughter, Aurora, challenged me to complete my story during the pandemic. Through the eyes of my grandchildren as well as all the hundreds of ethnically diverse children I have taught for the last 35 years in NYC public and private schools, I saw firsthand that all children share the same fascination with the mysteries of the universe. The passion to capture that essence of wonder of what lies beyond as well provide comfort and understanding to children who feel alone and isolated in their lives never wavered.
The Boy and the Secret of the Stars, provides excitement describing the experience of an eight-year-old boy who after making a wish upon a star is taken on a journey where he discovers a connection to the beauty of the universe while gaining self-confidence.
My hope is, reading about Eli’s journey and the challenges he faced through his adventure, the reader or the children being read to can relate and feel the same journey within them. Originally written as a children’s play, then a simplified children’s picture book, after reading my story at a writing group of professional writers and receiving feedback at a writing conference, The Boy and the Secret of the Stars, became a middle-grade chapter book.
Victoria and her DaughterBy the time the book was complete, that little baby girl who I was rocking to sleep when the idea flashed before my eyes, became a Parson’s School of Design Fine Arts graduate, and we became a Mother/Daughter, Author/Illustrator team.
Since the March 2024 book launch, I received thirty 5 star Amazon book reviews, as well as two Readers favorite reviews after applying to a Book award contest. Middle-grade students aged 8-12 and families who like to read bedtime stories to their mixed aged girls and boys who enjoy space fantasy adventures, will hopefully be enticed, to answer the question, “What is your dream?” and feel the same confidence Eli did within themselves as they learn facts about nature and outer space.
My book starts out in Central Park, NYC, highlighting key favorite spots for children to visit and describes excursions in nature Eli has taken with his mother on Long Island, NY, but most of the geographic locations are in outer space. I did a lot of research to include real aspects of the galaxy, appealing to children who love the natural world, collecting stones, identifying birds, and love studying the planets, and constellations.

misty the unicorn and the shouting king
Author, Lori NatesHi Everyone,
Welcome to Wanda Luthman’s Christian and Children’s Book Blog!
Today, I’m sharing a Book 2 of a 4 books series about Misty, the Unicorn.
Here’s the author, Lori, to tell us more about it….
Lori Nates has been an avid reader and writer since childhood. She is the author of the children’s books Misty the Unicorn and the Magical Rainbow and Misty the Unicorn and the Shouting King. She graduated with high honors from Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Arts in history and psychology, and from Miami University in Ohio with a Master of Arts in history. Writing a master’s thesis on the history of southern Jewish women in the early twentieth century, as well as a fan fiction Star Wars novel, fueled her desire to become a professional writer. She worked as a legal secretary before fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a published author. She is the mother of a special needs child who loves fantasy and adventure stories. Her daughter’s autism inspired her to write her first book, Misty the Unicorn and the Magical Rainbow, and she trusts that her daughter will eventually learn to appreciate and share her love of reading. She hopes that her books will help other children develop a lifelong interest in and love of reading. This is her second young reader book.
When she is not writing, Lori enjoys practicing yoga, reading, watching classic movies, and spending time with her family. She lives in New Jersey. Readers can connect with her on Instagram: @lorinates1.
Available on AmazonIn Book 1 of the Misty the Unicorn series, Misty the Unicorn and the Magical Rainbow, we meet 6-year-old Becka Cohen, who lives in Ohio with her mother. One magical summer night, a shooting star streaks across the sky. Becka wishes on the shooting star that her unnamed new purple unicorn toy were real. Later that night, Becka is astonished to discover that her wish was granted, and that her purple unicorn toy has miraculously come to life. Misty the Unicorn has arrived from the country of Rainbow Domain to take Becka back to her home for a visit.
Join Becka and Misty as they travel to the end of the rainbow, to the enchanted realm of Rainbow Domain. Here you will meet a jolly rhyming leprechaun, a kind young prince, and the high-spirited, delightful people and animals of this magical country. Becka’s tour of Rainbow Domain will take her to the village farmers’ market, the park, and a new friend’s farm. There, she will discover she has lost the leprechaun’s gold coin, which is her return ticket home. Will Becka prove how honest she is and find the gold coin so she can return home in time?
This magical adventure book offers a fresh and unique take on the classic unicorn and rainbow story. Readers will smile during this feel-good story that will entertain and amuse them, while also subtly educating them. Misty highlights themes of friendship, responsibility, trust, kindness, acceptance, safety, security, and patriotism. This fantasy story is ultimately a celebration of American farm culture and small-town life.
The Misty the Unicorn series will be a 4-part series. In Book 3, we learn more about Becka’s mother, Lara, as well as the two co-captains of the king’s guards, Bentley the Irish wolfhound and Captain Connor. The mystery surrounding the origin of the unicorn Cinnamon’s illness will also be resolved.
Book 4 is going to have a lot of fun surprises as I wrap up this series, so stay tuned for that!
My book is available on all major online retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Thrift Books, and Walmart.

Thank you, Lori, for sharing with us today about your Misty the Unicorn book series! I enjoyed Book 2 and look forward to reading future books as well.
Here’s my review
This book has some enjoyable characters and good world-building. It is Book 2 in the series. Becka, the main character, visits Rainbow Domain and gets to meet the King and Queen. Some clues that there is something wrong along with backstory about a previous war is woven into the story.
I enjoyed the story but there was no real conflict or character growth. It is more of linking Book 1 to Book 3 basically preparing you for the conflict that I assume is coming.
I believe children will love the unicorn and the sweet main character!
Thank you to my blog followers for stopping by today. I hope you will pick up a copy of not only Book 2, but also Book 1 and stay tuned for Books 3 & 4!

fifty new testament stories for storytellers
Hi Everyone,
Welcome to Wanda Luthman’s Christian and Children’s Book Blog,
Today, I have an author from across the pond as we say in the USA about UK residents. Author Rob James and his illustrator, Amanda Ruston’s Publisher reached out to me about reading and reviewing this book. I truly enjoyed the concept since I also write Biblical Fiction, although my books written in this genre targets adults while this book targets children. You can read my review at the end of this post, but here’s what their publisher had to say about this awesome book, Fifty New Testament Stories for Storytellers…
From the Annunciation to the Resurrection to Paul’s travels, this new illustrated storyteller’s bible offers a fun and engaging way to introduce children to the key events of the New Testament. Each two-page narrative is built for dramatic verbal delivery, and ideas for enhancing the story are offered at the end of each narrative. Vibrant illustrations offer visual inspiration to reader and listener.
We’ve received some strong endorsements for the book, a selection of which you can read below.
“Rob James imaginatively re-tells well-known stories from the Bible, coloring in the highways and byways of the Galilee, drawing out the characters of the people Jesus met and taught and healed, and exploring the lives of the first Christians. Slowly, the narrative of God being with us is woven into the stories of the lives we live so that we can go out and share the stories of Christ’s life with others. I commend it most warmly.”—Graham Usher, Bishop of Norwich, Church of England
“Storytelling has always been at the heart of our Christian faith. The best, the most engaging, the most powerful, the most nourishing storytelling isn’t just an active speaker talking to passive listeners. Thank you to Rob James for offering practical tools to involve all of us in the sacred and joyful practice of storytelling.”—Michael Shapcott, Executive Director, Sorrento Centre, British Columbia
“This book made my son laugh the whole time. He really got into participating in the stories . . . and did so with gusto. He gave me a huge hug when we were finished reading.”—Mrs. Kate Keilty, Victoria, British Columbia
“Good storytelling engages the body, mind, heart, and soul, creating a full-body experience. Fifty New Testament Stories for Storytellers by Rob James, with beautiful illustrations by Amanda Ruston, is an excellent resource for immersive and interactive biblical storytelling that will resonate with audiences of all ages.”
—Roger Hutchison, author of The Gift of Baptism and Sparrow’s Prayer
My review…This book is beautifully illustrated which helps the story come to life, especially for children. It is clearly not exact word for word from the Bible but more of an enhancement based on the true story told in the Bible. Readers should know that some license has been taken to fill in the “holes” of the story with feelings, environment, and things the people might have said and/or done. This is called Biblical Fiction. It’s a great way to help make the Bible relatable which often brings greater understanding and deepen one’s faith, possibly even helping an unbeliever find faith. I love this book and think teachers and parents will enjoy reading this with the children in their lives!
Rob James has been a parish priest and the Chancellor of Wells Cathedral, Somerset. Having worked for the Church of England, he then moved to Canada where he is an Associate Professor at the Vancouver School of Theology. His ministry has always included large amounts of children’s ministry and biblical storytelling. He lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Amanda Ruston is an Anglican priest and vowed Benedictine. In addition to over twenty years’ experience in graphic design and illustration, she has an MDiv and is pursuing doctoral work in the field of liturgy and language. She lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.
