Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

S.E. Valenti I was married to my Sicilian husband for over 30 years. His love for the Sicilian culture, traditions, food, language, (actually everything Sicilian),…moreI was married to my Sicilian husband for over 30 years. His love for the Sicilian culture, traditions, food, language, (actually everything Sicilian), was contagious and I just naturally fell in love with all things Sicilian myself. About five years ago I dabbled just a little in putting a story down on paper about how the mafia started in Sicily but quickly realized I had a lot of research to do. And, just watching the Godfather and the Sopranos wasn't going to cut it. So, we started traveling to Sicily and actually reconnected with his family there. And, at the same time I started researching and reading everything I could get my hands on relative to the Sicilian culture and the beginnings of the early Mafia. After several drafts I finally liked the story and had a professional copy editor go through the manuscript. Well, that was my first eye opener and made me realize I had a lot more work to do!

Then my husband died in 2012 and I put the manuscript away. I just could do much of anything while I was trying to heal. So I put my book away. But after about a year and half, I suddenly realized the perfect way to honor the memory of my beloved Sicilian was to finish the book. And so I did. After two more copy edits it was ready to present to a publisher.

I was really blessed with a great individual who not only edited my book for me but actually LOVES the story as much as I do, I think. Amanda Rooker from Split-Seed has been very, very instrumental in getting my book to market. Her enthusiasm has been so wonderful I am proud to say she is now my agent. Not to mention her husband designed a beautiful website for me. But the most exciting news was that she had made some wonderful contacts in the literary world through the years, one, a man by the name of John Koehler from Koehler Publishing was interested in story about the mafia! We submitted the novel to John early last year and he, I am very blessed to say, liked my work and took me on as a "Debut Author." And that's pretty much how I got to this point in my writing career.(less)
